This is extremely useful for testing the split hypervisor on VHE-only systems, and paves the way for new use cases that depend on having two TTBRs available at EL2. - Generalized framework for configurable ID registers from userspace. KVM/arm64 currently prevents arbitrary CPU feature set configuration from userspace, but the intent is to relax this limitation and allow userspace to select a feature set consistent with the CPU. - Enable the use of Branch Target Identification (FEAT_BTI) in the hypervisor. - Use a separate set of pointer authentication keys for the hypervisor when running in protected mode, as the host is untrusted at runtime. - Ensure timer IRQs are consistently released in the init failure paths. - Avoid trapping CTR_EL0 on systems with Enhanced Virtualization Traps (FEAT_EVT), as it is a register commonly read from userspace. - Erratum workaround for the upcoming AmpereOne part, which has broken hardware A/D state management. As a consequence of the hVHE series reworking the arm64 software features framework, the for-next/module-alloc branch from the arm64 tree comes along for the ride.

2023-06-22dt-bindings: firmware: qcom,scm: Document that SCM can be dma-coherentDouglas Anderson1-0/+2
Trogdor devices use firmware backed by TF-A instead of Qualcomm's normal TZ. On TF-A we end up mapping memory as cacheable. Specifically, you can see in Trogdor's TF-A code [1] in qti_sip_mem_assign() that we call qti_mmap_add_dynamic_region() with MT_RO_DATA. This translates down to MT_MEMORY instead of MT_NON_CACHEABLE or MT_DEVICE. Let's allow devices like trogdor to be described properly by allowing "dma-coherent" in the SCM node. This was asked for to prevent leaks of user events hanging around needing admins to clean them up. - Add persistent logic (but not let user space use it yet) In some cases, having a persistent user event (one that does not get cleaned up automatically) is useful. But there's still debates about how to expose this to user space. AmpereOne has an erratum in its implementation of FEAT_HAFDBS that required disabling the feature on the design. This was done by reporting the feature as not implemented in the ID register, although the corresponding control bits were not actually RES0. This does not align well with the requirements of the architecture, which mandates these bits be RES0 if HAFDBS isn't implemented. The kernel's use of stage-1 is unaffected, as the HA and HD bits are only set if HAFDBS is detected in the ID register. KVM, on the other hand, relies on the RES0 behavior at stage-2 to use the same value for VTCR_EL2 on any cpu in the system. Mitigate the non-RES0 behavior by leaving VTCR_EL2.HA clear on affected systems. Now user_events auto-cleanup upon the last reference by default. This makes it not possible to use the dynamics event file via tracefs. Document that auto-cleanup is enabled by default and remove the refernce to /sys/kernel/tracing/dynamic_events file to make this clear. 2023-06-06arm64: module: rework module VA range selectionMark Rutland1-4/+4
Currently, the modules region is 128M in size, which is a problem for some large modules. Shanker reports [1] that the NVIDIA GPU driver alone can consume 110M of module space in some configurations. We'd like to make the modules region a full 2G such that we can always make use of a 2G range. It's possible to build kernel images which are larger than 128M in some configurations, such as when many debug options are selected and many drivers are built in. In these configurations, we can't legitimately select a base for a 128M module region, though we currently select a value for which allocation will fail. It would be nicer to have a diagnostic message in this case. Similarly, in theory it's possible to build a kernel image which is larger than 2G and which cannot support modules. While this isn't likely to be the case for any realistic kernel deplyed in the field, it would be nice if we could print a diagnostic in this case. This patch reworks the module VA range selection to use a 2G range, and improves handling of cases where we cannot select legitimate module regions. We now attempt to select a 128M region and a 2G region: * The 128M region is selected such that modules can use direct branches (with JUMP26/CALL26 relocations) to branch to kernel code and other modules, and so that modules can reference data and text (using PREL32 relocations) anywhere in the kernel image and other modules. This region covers the entire kernel image (rather than just the text) to ensure that all PREL32 relocations are in range even when the kernel data section is absurdly large. Where we cannot allocate from this region, we'll fall back to the full 2G region. * The 2G region is selected such that modules can use direct branches with PLTs to branch to kernel code and other modules, and so that modules can use reference data and text (with PREL32 relocations) in the kernel image and other modules. This region covers the entire kernel image, and the 128M region (if one is selected). The two module regions are randomized independently while ensuring the constraints described above. The existing documentation refers to memory.high as the "main mechanism to control memory usage." This seems incorrect to me - memory.high can result in reclaim pressure which simply leads to stalls unless some external component observes and actions on it (e.g. systemd-oomd can be used for this purpose). While this is feasible, users are unaware of this interaction and are led to believe that memory.high alone is an effective mechanism for limiting memory. The documentation should recommend the use of memory.max as the effective way to enforce memory limits - it triggers reclaim and results in OOM kills by itself. With this commit, all the GIDs ("0 4294967294") can be written to the "net.ipv4.ping_group_range" sysctl. Note that 4294967295 (0xffffffff) is an invalid GID (see gid_valid() in include/linux/uidgid.h), and an attempt to register this number will cause -EINVAL. Prior to this commit, only up to GID 2147483647 could be covered. Documentation/networking/ip-sysctl.rst had "0 4294967295" as an example value, but this example was wrong and causing -EINVAL. Without EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM, users are allowed to map arbitrary physical memory regions into the userspace via /dev/mem. At the same time, pages may change their properties (e.g., from anonymous pages to named pages) while they are still being mapped in the userspace, leading to "corruption" detected by the page table check. To avoid these false positives, this patch makes PAGE_TABLE_CHECK depends on EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM. This dependency is understandable because PAGE_TABLE_CHECK is a hardening technique but /dev/mem without STRICT_DEVMEM (i.e., !EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM) is itself a security problem. Even with EXCLUSIVE_SYSTEM_RAM, I/O pages may be still allowed to be mapped via /dev/mem. However, these pages are always considered as named pages, so they won't break the logic used in the page table check. Histograms: - Fix regression of breaking the "stacktrace" modifier for variables. That modifier cannot be used for values, but can be used for variables that are passed from one histogram to the next. This was broken when adding the restriction to values as the variable logic used the same code. - Rename the special field "stacktrace" to "common_stacktrace". Special fields (that are not actually part of the event, but can act just like event fields, like 'comm' and 'timestamp') should be prefixed with 'common_' for consistency. To keep backward compatibility, 'stacktrace' can still be used (as with the special field 'cpu'), but can be overridden if the event has a field called 'stacktrace'. - Update the synthetic event selftests to use the new name (synthetic events are created by histograms) Tracing bootup selftests: - Reorganize the code to keep artifacts of the selftests not compiled in when selftests are not configured. - Add various cond_resched() around the selftest code, as the softlock watchdog was triggering much more often. It appears that the kernel runs slower now with full debugging enabled. - While debugging ftrace with ftrace (using an instance ring buffer instead of the top level one), I found that the selftests were disabling prints to the debug instance. This should not happen, as the selftests only disable printing to the main buffer as the selftests examine the main buffer to see if it has what it expects, and prints can make the tests fail.
