Pull TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL updates from Jens Axboe: "This sits on top of of the core entry/exit and x86 entry branch from the tip tree, which contains the generic and x86 parts of this work. Here we convert the rest of the archs to support TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. With that done, we can get rid of JOBCTL_TASK_WORK from task_work and signal.c, and also remove a deadlock work-around in io_uring around knowing that signal based task_work waking is invoked with the sighand wait queue head lock. The motivation for this work is to decouple signal notify based task_work, of which io_uring is a heavy user of, from sighand. The sighand lock becomes a huge contention point, particularly for threaded workloads where it's shared between threads. Even outside of threaded applications it's slower than it needs to be. Roman Gershman <romger@amazon.com> reported that his networked workload dropped from 1.6M QPS at 80% CPU to 1.0M QPS at 100% CPU after io_uring was changed to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL. The time was all spent hammering on the sighand lock, showing 57% of the CPU time there [1]. There are further cleanups possible on top of this. One example is TIF_PATCH_PENDING, where a patch already exists to use TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL instead. Hopefully this will also lead to more consolidation, but the work stands on its own as well" [1] https://github.com/axboe/liburing/issues/215 * tag 'tif-task_work.arch-2020-12-14' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux-block: (28 commits) io_uring: remove 'twa_signal_ok' deadlock work-around kernel: remove checking for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL signal: kill JOBCTL_TASK_WORK io_uring: JOBCTL_TASK_WORK is no longer used by task_work task_work: remove legacy TWA_SIGNAL path sparc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL riscv: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL nds32: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ia64: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL h8300: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL c6x: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL alpha: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL xtensa: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL arm: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL microblaze: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL hexagon: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL csky: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL openrisc: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL sh: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL um: add support for TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic cross-architecture timer cleanup from Arnd Bergmann: "This cleans up two ancient timer features that were never completed in the past, CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS and CONFIG_ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET. There was only one user left for the ARCH_USES_GETTIMEOFFSET variant of clocksource implementations, the ARM EBSA110 platform. Rather than changing to use modern timekeeping, we remove the platform entirely as Russell no longer uses his machine and nobody else seems to have one any more. The conditional code for using arch_gettimeoffset() is removed as a result. For CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, there are still a couple of platforms not using clockevent drivers: parisc, ia64, most of m68k, and one Arm platform. These all do timer ticks slighly differently, and this gets cleaned up to the point they at least all call the same helper function. Instead of most platforms using 'select GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS' in Kconfig, the polarity is now reversed, with the few remaining ones selecting LEGACY_TIMER_TICK instead" * tag 'asm-generic-timers-5.11' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: timekeeping: default GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS to enabled timekeeping: remove xtime_update m68k: remove timer_interrupt() function m68k: change remaining timers to legacy_timer_tick m68k: m68328: use legacy_timer_tick() m68k: sun3/sun3c: use legacy_timer_tick m68k: split heartbeat out of timer function m68k: coldfire: use legacy_timer_tick() parisc: use legacy_timer_tick ARM: rpc: use legacy_timer_tick ia64: convert to legacy_timer_tick timekeeping: add CONFIG_LEGACY_TIMER_TICK timekeeping: remove arch_gettimeoffset net: remove am79c961a driver ARM: remove ebsa110 platform

2020-10-30timekeeping: default GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS to enabledArnd Bergmann1-1/+0
Almost all machines use GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS, so it feels wrong to require each one to select that symbol manually. Instead, enable it whenever CONFIG_LEGACY_TIMER_TICK is disabled as a simplification. It should be possible to select both GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS and LEGACY_TIMER_TICK from an architecture now and decide at runtime between the two. For the clockevents arch-support.txt file, this means that additional architectures are marked as TODO when they have at least one machine that still uses LEGACY_TIMER_TICK, rather than being marked 'ok' when at least one machine has been converted. This means that both m68k and arm (for riscpc) revert to TODO. At this point, we could just always enable CONFIG_GENERIC_CLOCKEVENTS rather than leaving it off when not needed. I built an m68k defconfig kernel (using gcc-10.1.0) and found that this would add around 5.5KB in kernel image size: text data bss dec hex filename 3861936 1092236 196656 5150828 4e986c obj-m68k/vmlinux-no-clockevent 3866201 1093832 196184 5156217 4ead79 obj-m68k/vmlinux-clockevent On Arm (MACH_RPC), that difference appears to be twice as large, around 11KB on top of an 6MB vmlinux. 2020-08-20csum_partial_copy_nocheck(): drop the last argumentAl Viro2-4/+2
It's always 0. 2020-08-20unify generic instances of csum_partial_copy_nocheck()Al Viro1-0/+3
quite a few architectures have the same csum_partial_copy_nocheck() - simply memcpy() the data and then return the csum of the copy. hexagon, parisc, ia64, s390, um: explicitly spelled out that way. arc, arm64, csky, h8300, m68k/nommu, microblaze, mips/GENERIC_CSUM, nds32, nios2, openrisc, riscv, unicore32: end up picking the same thing spelled out in lib/checksum.h (with varying amounts of perversions along the way). everybody else (alpha, arm, c6x, m68k/mmu, mips/!GENERIC_CSUM, powerpc, sh, sparc, x86, xtensa) have non-generic variants. For all except c6x the declaration is in their asm/checksum.h. c6x uses the wrapper from asm-generic/checksum.h that would normally lead to the lib/checksum.h instance, but in case of c6x we end up using an asm function from arch/c6x instead. Screw that mess - have architectures with private instances define _HAVE_ARCH_CSUM_AND_COPY in their asm/checksum.h and have the default one right in net/checksum.h conditional on _HAVE_ARCH_CSUM_AND_COPY *not* defined. This will make it easier to maintain the core process creation code under kernel/, simplifies the callpaths and makes the identical for all architectures. 2020-06-09mm: consolidate pte_index() and pte_offset_*() definitionsMike Rapoport1-1/+0
All architectures define pte_index() as (address >> PAGE_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PTE - 1) and all architectures define pte_offset_kernel() as an entry in the array of PTEs indexed by the pte_index(). For the most architectures the pte_offset_kernel() implementation relies on the availability of pmd_page_vaddr() that converts a PMD entry value to the virtual address of the page containing PTEs array. Let's move x86 definitions of the PTE accessors to the generic place in <linux/pgtable.h> and then simply drop the respective definitions from the other architectures. The architectures that didn't provide pmd_page_vaddr() are updated to have that defined. The generic implementation of pte_offset_kernel() can be overridden by an architecture and alpha makes use of this because it has special ordering requirements for its version of pte_offset_kernel(). 2020-06-09c6x: add show_stack_loglvl()Dmitry Safonov1-7/+14
Currently, the log-level of show_stack() depends on a platform realization. It creates situations where the headers are printed with lower log level or higher than the stacktrace (depending on a platform or user). Furthermore, it forces the logic decision from user to an architecture side. In result, some users as sysrq/kdb/etc are doing tricks with temporary rising console_loglevel while printing their messages. And in result it not only may print unwanted messages from other CPUs, but also omit printing at all in the unlucky case where the printk() was deferred. Introducing log-level parameter and KERN_UNSUPPRESSED [1] seems an easier approach than introducing more printk buffers. Also, it will consolidate printings with headers. Introduce show_stack_loglvl(), that eventually will substitute show_stack(). 2020-05-05clk: Allow the common clk framework to be selectableStephen Boyd1-0/+1
Enable build testing and configuration control of the common clk framework so that more code coverage and testing can be done on the common clk framework across various architectures. This also nicely removes the requirement that architectures must select the framework when they don't use it in architecture code. There's one snag with doing this, and that's making sure that randconfig builds don't select this option when some architecture or platform implements 'struct clk' outside of the common clk framework. Introduce a new config option 'HAVE_LEGACY_CLK' to indicate those platforms that haven't migrated to the common clk framework and therefore shouldn't be allowed to select this new config option. Also add a note that we hope one day to remove this config entirely. Based on a patch by Mark Brown <broonie@kernel.org>. 2019-12-10mm/vmalloc: Add empty <asm/vmalloc.h> headers and use them from ↵Ingo Molnar1-0/+4
<linux/vmalloc.h> In the x86 MM code we'd like to untangle various types of historic header dependency spaghetti, but for this we'd need to pass to the generic vmalloc code various vmalloc related defines that customarily come via the <asm/page.h> low level arch header. 2019-12-08sched/rt, c6x: Use CONFIG_PREEMPTIONThomas Gleixner1-4/+4
CONFIG_PREEMPTION is selected by CONFIG_PREEMPT and by CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT. Both PREEMPT and PREEMPT_RT require the same functionality which today depends on CONFIG_PREEMPT. Switch the entry code over to use CONFIG_PREEMPTION. 2019-12-05c6x: use pgtable-nopud instead of 4level-fixupMike Rapoport1-1/+1
c6x is a nommu architecture and does not require fixup for upper layers of the page tables because it is already handled by the generic nommu implementation. Replace usage of include/asm-generic/4level-fixup.h with include/asm-generic/pgtable-nopud.h Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1572938135-31886-4-git-send-email-rppt@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.ibm.com> Cc: Anatoly Pugachev <matorola@gmail.com> Cc: Anton Ivanov <anton.ivanov@cambridgegreys.com> Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: "David S.
