2024-05-16kprobe/ftrace: bail out if ftrace was killedStephen Brennan1-0/+3
If an error happens in ftrace, ftrace_kill() will prevent disarming kprobes. Eventually, the ftrace_ops associated with the kprobes will be freed, yet the kprobes will still be active, and when triggered, they will use the freed memory, likely resulting in a page fault and panic. This behavior can be reproduced quite easily, by creating a kprobe and then triggering a ftrace_kill(). For simplicity, we can simulate an ftrace error with a kernel module like [1]: [1]: https://github.com/brenns10/kernel_stuff/tree/master/ftrace_killer sudo perf probe --add commit_creds sudo perf trace -e probe:commit_creds # In another terminal make sudo insmod ftrace_killer.ko # calls ftrace_kill(), simulating bug # Back to perf terminal # ctrl-c sudo perf probe --del commit_creds After a short period, a page fault and panic would occur as the kprobe continues to execute and uses the freed ftrace_ops. While ftrace_kill() is supposed to be used only in extreme circumstances, it is invoked in FTRACE_WARN_ON() and so there are many places where an unexpected bug could be triggered, yet the system may continue operating, possibly without the administrator noticing. If ftrace_kill() does not panic the system, then we should do everything we can to continue operating, rather than leave a ticking time bomb. 2024-05-09kbuild: use $(src) instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for source directoryMasahiro Yamada2-4/+2
Kbuild conventionally uses $(obj)/ for generated files, and $(src)/ for checked-in source files. It is merely a convention without any functional difference. In fact, $(obj) and $(src) are exactly the same, as defined in scripts/Makefile.build: src := $(obj) When the kernel is built in a separate output directory, $(src) does not accurately reflect the source directory location. While Kbuild resolves this discrepancy by specifying VPATH=$(srctree) to search for source files, it does not cover all cases. For example, when adding a header search path for local headers, -I$(srctree)/$(src) is typically passed to the compiler. This introduces inconsistency between upstream and downstream Makefiles because $(src) is used instead of $(srctree)/$(src) for the latter. To address this inconsistency, this commit changes the semantics of $(src) so that it always points to the directory in the source tree. Going forward, the variables used in Makefiles will have the following meanings: $(obj) - directory in the object tree $(src) - directory in the source tree (changed by this commit) $(objtree) - the top of the kernel object tree $(srctree) - the top of the kernel source tree Consequently, $(srctree)/$(src) in upstream Makefiles need to be replaced with $(src). 2024-04-26csky: use initializer for struct vm_unmapped_area_infoRick Edgecombe1-6/+6
Future changes will need to add a new member to struct vm_unmapped_area_info. This would cause trouble for any call site that doesn't initialize the struct. Currently every caller sets each member manually, so if new members are added they will be uninitialized and the core code parsing the struct will see garbage in the new member. It could be possible to initialize the new member manually to 0 at each call site. This and a couple other options were discussed, and a working consensus (see links) was that in general the best way to accomplish this would be via static initialization with designated member initiators. Having some struct vm_unmapped_area_info instances not zero initialized will put those sites at risk of feeding garbage into vm_unmapped_area() if the convention is to zero initialize the struct and any new member addition misses a call site that initializes each member manually. It could be possible to leave the code mostly untouched, and just change the line: struct vm_unmapped_area_info info to: struct vm_unmapped_area_info info = {}; However, that would leave cleanup for the members that are manually set to zero, as it would no longer be required. So to be reduce the chance of bugs via uninitialized members, instead simply continue the process to initialize the struct this way tree wide. This will zero any unspecified members. Move the member initializers to the struct declaration when they are known at that time. Leave the members out that were manually initialized to zero, as this would be redundant for designated initializers. 2024-03-05mm: Remove broken pfn_to_virt() on arch csky/hexagon/openriscYan Zhao1-5/+0
Remove the broken pfn_to_virt() on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc. The pfn_to_virt() on those architectures takes PFN instead of PA as the input to macro __va(), with PAGE_SHIFT applying to the converted VA, which is not right, especially when there's a non-zero offset in __va(). [1] The broken pfn_to_virt() was noticed when checking how page_to_virt() is unfolded on x86. It turns out that the one in linux/mm.h instead of in asm-generic/page.h is compiled for x86. However, page_to_virt() in asm-generic/page.h is found out expanding to pfn_to_virt() with a bug described above. The pfn_to_virt() is found out not right as well on architectures csky/hexagon/openrisc. Since there's no single caller on csky/hexagon/openrisc to pfn_to_virt() and there are functions doing similar things as pfn_to_virt() -- - pfn_to_kaddr() in asm/page.h for csky, - page_to_virt() in asm/page.h for hexagon, and - page_to_virt() in linux/mm.h for openrisc, just delete the pfn_to_virt() on those architectures. The pfn_to_virt() in asm-generic/page.h is not touched in this patch as it's referenced by page_to_virt() in that header while the whole header is going to be removed as a whole due to no one including it. Introduce a generic way to query whether the data cache is virtually aliased on all architectures. Its purpose is to ensure that subsystems which are incompatible with virtually aliased data caches (e.g. FS_DAX) can reliably query this. For data cache aliasing, there are three scenarios dependending on the architecture. Here is a breakdown based on my understanding: A) The data cache is always aliasing: * arc * csky * m68k (note: shared memory mappings are incoherent ? SHMLBA is missing there.) * sh * parisc B) The data cache aliasing is statically known or depends on querying CPU state at runtime: * arm (cache_is_vivt() || cache_is_vipt_aliasing()) * mips (cpu_has_dc_aliases) * nios2 (NIOS2_DCACHE_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) * sparc32 (vac_cache_size > PAGE_SIZE) * sparc64 (L1DCACHE_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) * xtensa (DCACHE_WAY_SIZE > PAGE_SIZE) C) The data cache is never aliasing: * alpha * arm64 (aarch64) * hexagon * loongarch (but with incoherent write buffers, which are disabled since commit d23b7795 ("LoongArch: Change SHMLBA from SZ_64K to PAGE_SIZE")) * microblaze * openrisc * powerpc * riscv * s390 * um * x86 Require architectures in A) and B) to select ARCH_HAS_CPU_CACHE_ALIASING and implement "cpu_dcache_is_aliasing()". Architectures in C) don't select ARCH_HAS_CPU_CACHE_ALIASING, and thus cpu_dcache_is_aliasing() simply evaluates to "false". Note that this leaves "cpu_icache_is_aliasing()" to be implemented as future work. This would be useful to gate features like XIP on architectures which have aliasing CPU dcache-icache but not CPU dcache-dcache. Use "cpu_dcache" and "cpu_cache" rather than just "dcache" and "cache" to clarify that we really mean "CPU data cache" and "CPU cache" to eliminate any possible confusion with VFS "dentry cache" and "page cache". 2024-02-10work around gcc bugs with 'asm goto' with outputsLinus Torvalds1-2/+2
We've had issues with gcc and 'asm goto' before, and we created a 'asm_volatile_goto()' macro for that in the past: see commits 3f0116c3238a ("compiler/gcc4: Add quirk for 'asm goto' miscompilation bug") and a9f180345f53 ("compiler/gcc4: Make quirk for asm_volatile_goto() unconditional"). Then, much later, we ended up removing the workaround in commit 43c249ea0b1e ("compiler-gcc.h: remove ancient workaround for gcc PR 58670") because we no longer supported building the kernel with the affected gcc versions, but we left the macro uses around. Now, Sean Christopherson reports a new version of a very similar problem, which is fixed by re-applying that ancient workaround. But the problem in question is limited to only the 'asm goto with outputs' cases, so instead of re-introducing the old workaround as-is, let's rename and limit the workaround to just that much less common case. It looks like there are at least two separate issues that all hit in this area: (a) some versions of gcc don't mark the asm goto as 'volatile' when it has outputs: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=98619 https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110420 which is easy to work around by just adding the 'volatile' by hand. (b) Internal compiler errors: https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=110422 which are worked around by adding the extra empty 'asm' as a barrier, as in the original workaround. but the problem Sean sees may be a third thing since it involves bad code generation (not an ICE) even with the manually added 'volatile'. but the same old workaround works for this case, even if this feels a bit like voodoo programming and may only be hiding the issue. The pcpu setup when using the page allocator sets up a new vmalloc mapping very early in the boot process, so early that it cannot use the flush_cache_vmap() function which may depend on structures not yet initialized (for example in riscv, we currently send an IPI to flush other cpus TLB). But on some architectures, we must call flush_cache_vmap(): for example, in riscv, some uarchs can cache invalid TLB entries so we need to flush the new established mapping to avoid taking an exception. So fix this by introducing a new function flush_cache_vmap_early() which is called right after setting the new page table entry and before accessing this new mapping. This new function implements a local flush tlb on riscv and is no-op for other architectures (same as today). A number of architectures either kept the screen_info definition for historical purposes as it used to be required by the generic VT code, or they copied it from another architecture in order to build the VGA console driver in an allmodconfig build. Making virt_to_pfn() a static inline taking a strongly typed (const void *) makes the contract of a passing a pointer of that type to the function explicit and exposes any misuse of the macro virt_to_pfn() acting polymorphic and accepting many types such as (void *), (unitptr_t) or (unsigned long) as arguments without warnings. For symmetry to the same thing with pfn_to_virt(). In order to do this we move the virt_to_phys() and phys_to_virt() below the definitions of the __pa() and __va() macros so it compiles. The macro version was also able to do recursive symbol resolution. The final icache_flush was in the update_mmu_cache, and update_mmu_cache is after the set_pte_at. Thus, when CPU0 sets the pte, the other CPU would see it before the icache_flush broadcast happens, and their icaches may have cached stale VIPT cache lines in their I-caches. When address translation was ready for the new cache line, they will use the stale data of icache, not the fresh one of the dcache. The csky instruction cache is VIPT, and it needs an origin virtual address to invalidate the virtual address index entries of cache ways. The current implementation uses a temporary mapping mechanism - kmap_atomic, which returns a new virtual address for invalidation. But, the original virtual address cache line may still in the I-cache. So force invalidation I-cache in update_mmu_cache, and prevent flush_dcache when there is an EXEC page. 2023-07-12mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()Rick Edgecombe1-1/+1
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires some core mm changes to function properly. One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable, but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular writable or shadow stack mappings. But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA. So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite() added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers can be changed to take/pass a VMA. Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(), create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma(). No functional change. As already mentioned in my merge message for the 'expand-stack' branch, we have something like 24 different versions of the page fault path for all our different architectures, all just _slightly_ different due to various historical reasons (usually related to exactly when they branched off the original i386 version, and the details of the other architectures they had in their history). And a few of them had some silly mistake in the conversion. Most of the architectures call the faulting address 'address' in the fault path. But not all. Some just call it 'addr'. And if you end up doing a bit too much copy-and-paste, you end up with the wrong version in the places that do it differently. In this case it was csky. This modifies our user mode stack expansion code to always take the mmap_lock for writing before modifying the VM layout. It's actually something we always technically should have done, but because we didn't strictly need it, we were being lazy ("opportunistic" sounds so much better, doesn't it?) about things, and had this hack in place where we would extend the stack vma in-place without doing the proper locking. And it worked fine. We just needed to change vm_start (or, in the case of grow-up stacks, vm_end) and together with some special ad-hoc locking using the anon_vma lock and the mm->page_table_lock, it all was fairly straightforward. That is, it was all fine until Ruihan Li pointed out that now that the vma layout uses the maple tree code, we *really* don't just change vm_start and vm_end any more, and the locking really is broken. Oops. It's not actually all _that_ horrible to fix this once and for all, and do proper locking, but it's a bit painful. We have basically three different cases of stack expansion, and they all work just a bit differently: - the common and obvious case is the page fault handling. It's actually fairly simple and straightforward, except for the fact that we have something like 24 different versions of it, and you end up in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike. - the simplest case is the execve() code that creates a new stack. There are no real locking concerns because it's all in a private new VM that hasn't been exposed to anybody, but lockdep still can end up unhappy if you get it wrong. - and finally, we have GUP and page pinning, which shouldn't really be expanding the stack in the first place, but in addition to execve() we also use it for ptrace(). And debuggers do want to possibly access memory under the stack pointer and thus need to be able to expand the stack as a special case. None of these cases are exactly complicated, but the page fault case in particular is just repeated slightly differently many many times. And ia64 in particular has a fairly complicated situation where you can have both a regular grow-down stack _and_ a special grow-up stack for the register backing store. So to make this slightly more manageable, the bulk of this series is to first create a helper function for the most common page fault case, and convert all the straightforward architectures to it. Thus the new 'lock_mm_and_find_vma()' helper function, which ends up being used by x86, arm, powerpc, mips, riscv, alpha, arc, csky, hexagon, loongarch, nios2, sh, sparc32, and xtensa. So we not only convert more than half the architectures, we now have more shared code and avoid some of those twisty little passages. And largely due to this common helper function, the full diffstat of this series ends up deleting more lines than it adds. That still leaves eight architectures (ia64, m68k, microblaze, openrisc, parisc, s390, sparc64 and um) that end up doing 'expand_stack()' manually because they are doing something slightly different from the normal pattern. Along with the couple of special cases in execve() and GUP. So there's a couple of patches that first create 'locked' helper versions of the stack expansion functions, so that there's a obvious path forward in the conversion. The execve() case is then actually pretty simple, and is a nice cleanup from our old "grow-up stackls are special, because at execve time even they grow down". The #ifdef CONFIG_STACK_GROWSUP in that code just goes away, because it's just more straightforward to write out the stack expansion there manually, instead od having get_user_pages_remote() do it for us in some situations but not others and have to worry about locking rules for GUP. And the final step is then to just convert the remaining odd cases to a new world order where 'expand_stack()' is called with the mmap_lock held for reading, but where it might drop it and upgrade it to a write, only to return with it held for reading (in the success case) or with it completely dropped (in the failure case). In the process, we remove all the stack expansion from GUP (where dropping the lock wouldn't be ok without special rules anyway), and add it in manually to __access_remote_vm() for ptrace(). Thanks to Adrian Glaubitz and Frank Scheiner who tested the ia64 cases. Everything else here felt pretty straightforward, but the ia64 rules for stack expansion are really quite odd and very different from everything else. Also thanks to Vegard Nossum who caught me getting one of those odd conditions entirely the wrong way around. Anyway, I think I want to actually move all the stack expansion code to a whole new file of its own, rather than have it split up between mm/mmap.c and mm/memory.c, but since this will have to be backported to the initial maple tree vma introduction anyway, I tried to keep the patches _fairly_ minimal. Also, while I don't think it's valid to expand the stack from GUP, the final patch in here is a "warn if some crazy GUP user wants to try to expand the stack" patch. That one will be reverted before the final release, but it's left to catch any odd cases during the merge window and release candidates.
