2023-09-11arch: Remove Itanium (IA-64) architectureArd Biesheuvel118-12184/+0
The Itanium architecture is obsolete, and an informal survey [0] reveals that any residual use of Itanium hardware in production is mostly HP-UX or OpenVMS based. The use of Linux on Itanium appears to be limited to enthusiasts that occasionally boot a fresh Linux kernel to see whether things are still working as intended, and perhaps to churn out some distro packages that are rarely used in practice. None of the original companies behind Itanium still produce or support any hardware or software for the architecture, and it is listed as 'Orphaned' in the MAINTAINERS file, as apparently, none of the engineers that contributed on behalf of those companies (nor anyone else, for that matter) have been willing to support or maintain the architecture upstream or even be responsible for applying the odd fix. The Intel firmware team removed all IA-64 support from the Tianocore/EDK2 reference implementation of EFI in 2018. (Itanium is the original architecture for which EFI was developed, and the way Linux supports it deviates significantly from other architectures.) Some distros, such as Debian and Gentoo, still maintain [unofficial] ia64 ports, but many have dropped support years ago. While the argument is being made [1] that there is a 'for the common good' angle to being able to build and run existing projects such as the Grid Community Toolkit [2] on Itanium for interoperability testing, the fact remains that none of those projects are known to be deployed on Linux/ia64, and very few people actually have access to such a system in the first place. Even if there were ways imaginable in which Linux/ia64 could be put to good use today, what matters is whether anyone is actually doing that, and this does not appear to be the case. There are no emulators widely available, and so boot testing Itanium is generally infeasible for ordinary contributors. GCC still supports IA-64 but its compile farm [3] no longer has any IA-64 machines. GLIBC would like to get rid of IA-64 [4] too because it would permit some overdue code cleanups. In summary, the benefits to the ecosystem of having IA-64 be part of it are mostly theoretical, whereas the maintenance overhead of keeping it supported is real. So let's rip off the band aid, and remove the IA-64 arch code entirely. This follows the timeline proposed by the Debian/ia64 maintainer [5], which removes support in a controlled manner, leaving IA-64 in a known good state in the most recent LTS release. Other projects will follow once the kernel support is removed. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull x86 shadow stack support from Dave Hansen: "This is the long awaited x86 shadow stack support, part of Intel's Control-flow Enforcement Technology (CET). CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack part of this feature, and just for userspace. The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction, the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy. CONFIG_* switches should not be exposed in uapi headers. The macros that are defined here are also only useful for the kernel code, so let's move them to asm/cmpxchg.h instead. The only two files that are using these macros are the headers arch/ia64/include/asm/bitops.h and arch/ia64/include/asm/atomic.h and these include asm/cmpxchg.h via asm/intrinsics.h, so this movement should not cause any trouble. 2023-08-18ia64: mm: convert to GENERIC_IOREMAPBaoquan He1-8/+5
By taking GENERIC_IOREMAP method, the generic generic_ioremap_prot(), generic_iounmap(), and their generic wrapper ioremap_prot(), ioremap() and iounmap() are all visible and available to arch. Arch needs to provide wrapper functions to override the generic versions if there's arch specific handling in its ioremap_prot(), ioremap() or iounmap(). This change will simplify implementation by removing duplicated code with generic_ioremap_prot() and generic_iounmap(), and has the equivalent functioality as before. Here, add wrapper functions ioremap_prot() and iounmap() for ia64's special operation when ioremap() and iounmap(). 2023-08-12locking: remove spin_lock_prefetchMateusz Guzik1-3/+0
The only remaining consumer is new_inode, where it showed up in 2001 as commit c37fa164f793 ("v2.4.9.9 -> v2.4.9.10") in a historical repo [1] with a changelog which does not mention it. Since then the line got only touched up to keep compiling. While it may have been of benefit back in the day, it is guaranteed to at best not get in the way in the multicore setting -- as the code performs *a lot* of work between the prefetch and actual lock acquire, any contention means the cacheline is already invalid by the time the routine calls spin_lock(). It adds spurious traffic, for short. On top of it prefetch is notoriously tricky to use for single-threaded purposes, making it questionable from the get go. As such, remove it. I admit upfront I did not see value in benchmarking this change, but I can do it if that is deemed appropriate. Removal from new_inode and of the entire thing are in the same patch as requested by Linus, so whatever weird looks can be directed at that guy. 2023-07-14ACPI: processor: Rename ACPI_PDC symbolsMichal Wilczynski1-2/+2
The prefix in the names of the ACPI_PDC symbols suggests that they are only relevant for _PDC, but in fact they can also be used in the _OSC. Change that prefix to a more generic ACPI_PROC_CAP that will better reflect the purpose of those symbols as they represent bits in a general processor capabilities buffer. 2023-07-12mm: Rename arch pte_mkwrite()'s to pte_mkwrite_novma()Rick Edgecombe1-1/+1
The x86 Shadow stack feature includes a new type of memory called shadow stack. This shadow stack memory has some unusual properties, which requires some core mm changes to function properly. One of these unusual properties is that shadow stack memory is writable, but only in limited ways. These limits are applied via a specific PTE bit combination. Nevertheless, the memory is writable, and core mm code will need to apply the writable permissions in the typical paths that call pte_mkwrite(). The goal is to make pte_mkwrite() take a VMA, so that the x86 implementation of it can know whether to create regular writable or shadow stack mappings. But there are a couple of challenges to this. Modifying the signatures of each arch pte_mkwrite() implementation would be error prone because some are generated with macros and would need to be re-implemented. Also, some pte_mkwrite() callers operate on kernel memory without a VMA. So this can be done in a three step process. First pte_mkwrite() can be renamed to pte_mkwrite_novma() in each arch, with a generic pte_mkwrite() added that just calls pte_mkwrite_novma(). Next callers without a VMA can be moved to pte_mkwrite_novma(). And lastly, pte_mkwrite() and all callers can be changed to take/pass a VMA. Start the process by renaming pte_mkwrite() to pte_mkwrite_novma() and adding the pte_mkwrite() wrapper in linux/pgtable.h. Apply the same pattern for pmd_mkwrite(). Since not all archs have a pmd_mkwrite_novma(), create a new arch config HAS_HUGE_PAGE that can be used to tell if pmd_mkwrite() should be defined. Otherwise in the !HAS_HUGE_PAGE cases the compiler would not be able to find pmd_mkwrite_novma(). No functional change. 2023-06-22kbuild: generate KSYMTAB entries by modpostMasahiro Yamada2-3/+1
Commit 7b4537199a4a ("kbuild: link symbol CRCs at final link, removing CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS") made modpost output CRCs in the same way whether the EXPORT_SYMBOL() is placed in *.c or *.S. For further cleanups, this commit applies a similar approach to the entire data structure of EXPORT_SYMBOL(). The EXPORT_SYMBOL() compilation is split into two stages. When a source file is compiled, EXPORT_SYMBOL() will be converted into a dummy symbol in the .export_symbol section. For example, EXPORT_SYMBOL(foo); EXPORT_SYMBOL_NS_GPL(bar, BAR_NAMESPACE); will be encoded into the following assembly code: .section ".export_symbol","a" __export_symbol_foo: .asciz "" /* license */ .asciz "" /* name space */ .balign 8 .quad foo /* symbol reference */ .previous .section ".export_symbol","a" __export_symbol_bar: .asciz "GPL" /* license */ .asciz "BAR_NAMESPACE" /* name space */ .balign 8 .quad bar /* symbol reference */ .previous They are mere markers to tell modpost the name, license, and namespace of the symbols. They will be dropped from the final vmlinux and modules because the *(.export_symbol) will go into /DISCARD/ in the linker script. Then, modpost extracts all the information about EXPORT_SYMBOL() from the .export_symbol section, and generates the final C code: KSYMTAB_FUNC(foo, "", ""); KSYMTAB_FUNC(bar, "_gpl", "BAR_NAMESPACE"); KSYMTAB_FUNC() (or KSYMTAB_DATA() if it is data) is expanded to struct kernel_symbol that will be linked to the vmlinux or a module. With this change, EXPORT_SYMBOL() works in the same way for *.c and *.S files, providing the following benefits. [1] Deprecate EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL() In the old days, EXPORT_SYMBOL() was only available in C files. To export a symbol in *.S, EXPORT_SYMBOL() was placed in a separate *.c file. arch/arm/kernel/armksyms.c is one example written in the classic manner. Commit 22823ab419d8 ("EXPORT_SYMBOL() for asm") removed this limitation. Since then, EXPORT_SYMBOL() can be placed close to the symbol definition in *.S files. It was a nice improvement. However, as that commit mentioned, you need to use EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL() for data objects on some architectures. In the new approach, modpost checks symbol's type (STT_FUNC or not), and outputs KSYMTAB_FUNC() or KSYMTAB_DATA() accordingly. There are only two users of EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL: EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL_GPL(empty_zero_page) (arch/ia64/kernel/head.S) EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL(ia64_ivt) (arch/ia64/kernel/ivt.S) They are transformed as follows and output into .vmlinux.export.c KSYMTAB_DATA(empty_zero_page, "_gpl", ""); KSYMTAB_DATA(ia64_ivt, "", ""); The other EXPORT_SYMBOL users in ia64 assembly are output as KSYMTAB_FUNC(). EXPORT_DATA_SYMBOL() is now deprecated. [2] merge <linux/export.h> and <asm-generic/export.h> There are two similar header implementations: include/linux/export.h for .c files include/asm-generic/export.h for .S files Ideally, the functionality should be consistent between them, but they tend to diverge. Commit 8651ec01daed ("module: add support for symbol namespaces.") did not support the namespace for *.S files. This commit shifts the essential implementation part to C, which supports EXPORT_SYMBOL_NS() for *.S files. <asm/export.h> and <asm-generic/export.h> will remain as a wrapper of <linux/export.h> for a while. They will be removed after #include <asm/export.h> directives are all replaced with #include <linux/export.h>. [3] Implement CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS in one-pass algorithm (by a later commit) When CONFIG_TRIM_UNUSED_KSYMS is enabled, Kbuild recursively traverses the directory tree to determine which EXPORT_SYMBOL to trim. If an EXPORT_SYMBOL turns out to be unused by anyone, Kbuild begins the second traverse, where some source files are recompiled with their EXPORT_SYMBOL() tuned into a no-op. We can do this better now; modpost can selectively emit KSYMTAB entries that are really used by modules. 2023-05-18fbdev: Move framebuffer I/O helpers into <asm/fb.h>Thomas Zimmermann1-0/+20
Implement framebuffer I/O helpers, such as fb_read*() and fb_write*(), in the architecture's <asm/fb.h> header file or the generic one. The common case has been the use of regular I/O functions, such as __raw_readb() or memset_io(). A few architectures used plain system- memory reads and writes. Sparc used helpers for its SBus. The architectures that used special cases provide the same code in their __raw_*() I/O helpers. So the patch replaces this code with the __raw_*() functions and moves it to <asm-generic/fb.h> for all architectures. v8: * remove garbage after commit-message tags v6: * fix fb_readq()/fb_writeq() on 64-bit mips (kernel test robot) v5: * include <linux/io.h> in <asm-generic/fb>; fix s390 build v4: * ia64, loongarch, sparc64: add fb_mem*() to arch headers to keep current semantics (Arnd) v3: * implement all architectures with generic helpers * support reordering and native byte order (Geert, Arnd) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Tested-by: Sui Jingfeng <suijingfeng@loongson.cn> Reviewed-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20230512102444.5438-7-tzimmermann@suse.de

Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems. - driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are passing around and working with structures that really do not have to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making things safer overall. 2023-02-14char/agp: introduce asm-generic/agp.hMike Rapoport2-21/+1

There is a copy of alloc_gatt_pages() and free_gatt_pages in several architectures in arch/$ARCH/include/asm/agp.h. They've been under test in linux-next for a couple of months without, to my knowledge, any negative reports (or any positive ones, come to that). - Also the Maple Tree from Liam Howlett. An overlapping range-based tree for vmas. It it apparently slightly more efficient in its own right, but is mainly targeted at enabling work to reduce mmap_lock contention. Liam has identified a number of other tree users in the kernel which could be beneficially onverted to mapletrees. Yu Zhao has identified a hard-to-hit but "easy to fix" lockdep splat at [1]. This has yet to be addressed due to Liam's unfortunately timed vacation. He is now back and we'll get this fixed up. - Dmitry Vyukov introduces KMSAN: the Kernel Memory Sanitizer. 2022-09-09termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.hAl Viro1-13/+0
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. 2022-09-09termios: start unifying non-UAPI parts of asm/termios.hAl Viro1-16/+0
* new header (linut/termios_internal.h), pulled by the users of those suckers * defaults for INIT_C_CC and externs for conversion helpers moved over there * remove termios-base.h (empty now) Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/YxDmptU7dNGZ+/Hn@ZenIV Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>

2022-08-27provide arch_test_bit_acquire for architectures that define test_bitMikulas Patocka1-5/+2
Some architectures define their own arch_test_bit and they also need arch_test_bit_acquire, otherwise they won't compile. We also clean up the code by using the generic test_bit if that is equivalent to the arch-specific version.
