2022-10-02kbuild: remove head-y syntaxMasahiro Yamada1-1/+0
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. 2022-10-02kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the headMasahiro Yamada1-2/+2
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. 2022-09-26microblaze: Add support for error injectionAppana Durga Kedareswara rao2-0/+60
To inject the error using the tmr inject IP reset vectors need to be placed in lmb(bram) due to the limitation in HW when this code runs out of DDR. Below code adds the error inject code to the .init.ivt section to copy it in machine_early_init to lmb/Bram location. C_BASE_VECTORS which allow moving reset vectors out of 0 location is not currently supported by Microblaze architecture, that's why all the time reset vectors with injection code is all the time copied to address 0. As of now getting this functionality working CPU switches to real mode and simply jumps to bram, which causes triggering of fault which continues to call_xmb_manager_break break handler which will at the end calls the error count callback function and performs recovery. 2022-09-26microblaze: Add custom break vector handler for mb managerAppana Durga Kedareswara rao2-1/+212
When the TMR Manager detects a fault Lockstep state it is signaled to the MicroBlaze processors by asserting a break signal, When Microblaze gets a break vector from tmr Microblaze it's needed to clear/block the break bit in the tmr manager before performing recovery. In order to perform recovery need to perform the following steps. 1) Store all internal MicroBlaze registers in RAM 2) Execute a suspend instruction which asserts the reset signal 3) Restore all registers from RAM and execute an RTBD instruction to return from the reset handler, to resume execution at the place where the break occurred. This API supports getting called from kernel space only. 2022-09-26microblaze: Add xmb_manager_register functionAppana Durga Kedareswara rao3-0/+75
Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) Microblaze solution provides soft error injection, detection, correction and recovery for Microblaze cores in the system. The Xilinx/AMD Triple Modular Redundancy (TMR) solution in Vivado provides all the necessary building blocks to implement a redundant triplicated MicroBlaze subsystem. This processing subsystem is fault-tolerant and continues to operate nominally after encountering an error. Together with the capability to detect and recover from errors, the implementation ensures the reliability of the entire subsystem. When the break vector gets asserted because of error injection, the break signal must be blocked before exiting from the break handler, This commit adds support for xmb_manager_register api which updates the TMR manager address and control register and error count and reset callback function arguments, which will be used by the break handler to block the break and call the error count callback function and reset callback function. CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO is now implicitly selected if one picks one of the explicit options that could be DEBUG_INFO_DWARF_TOOLCHAIN_DEFAULT, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF4, DEBUG_INFO_DWARF5. This was actually not what I had in mind when I suggested making it a 'choice' statement, but it's too late to change again now, and the Kconfig logic is more sensible in the new form. Change any defconfig file that had CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO enabled but did not pick DWARF4 or DWARF5 explicitly to now pick the toolchain default. 2022-06-28arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUSArnd Bergmann2-3/+0
All architecture-independent users of virt_to_bus() and bus_to_virt() have been fixed to use the dma mapping interfaces or have been removed now. This means the definitions on most architectures, and the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS symbol are now obsolete and can be removed. The only exceptions to this are a few network and scsi drivers for m68k Amiga and VME machines and ppc32 Macintosh. These drivers work correctly with the old interfaces and are probably not worth changing. On alpha and parisc, virt_to_bus() were still used in asm/floppy.h. alpha can use isa_virt_to_bus() like x86 does, and parisc can just open-code the virt_to_phys() here, as this is architecture specific code. I tried updating the bus-virt-phys-mapping.rst documentation, which started as an email from Linus to explain some details of the Linux-2.0 driver interfaces. The bits about virt_to_bus() were declared obsolete backin 2000, and the rest is not all that relevant any more, so in the end I just decided to remove the file completely. 2022-06-17mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory typesPeter Xu1-0/+4
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. 2022-05-07fork: Generalize PF_IO_WORKER handlingEric W. Biederman1-4/+3
Add fn and fn_arg members into struct kernel_clone_args and test for them in copy_thread (instead of testing for PF_KTHREAD | PF_IO_WORKER). This allows any task that wants to be a user space task that only runs in kernel mode to use this functionality. The code on x86 is an exception and still retains a PF_KTHREAD test because x86 unlikely everything else handles kthreads slightly differently than user space tasks that start with a function. The functions that created tasks that start with a function have been updated to set ".fn" and ".fn_arg" instead of ".stack" and ".stack_size". These functions are fork_idle(), create_io_thread(), kernel_thread(), and user_mode_thread(). Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20220506141512.516114-4-ebiederm@xmission.com Signed-off-by: "Eric W. 2022-04-21microblaze: Add support for reserved memory defined by DTMichal Simek1-0/+3
In DT reserved memory nodes can be added as is described by Documentation/devicetree/bindings/reserved-memory/reserved-memory.txt but Microblaze didn't have a support for it. The similar change was done for ARC by commit 1b10cb21d888 ("ARC: add support for reserved memory defined by device tree"). It is pretty much enough to call early_init_fdt_scan_reserved_mem(). Microblaze is not using initial_boot_params that's why there is no need to call early_init_fdt_reserve_self(). 2022-04-21microblaze: Use simple memmove/memcpy implementation from lib/string.cMichal Simek3-44/+5
This is based on previous commit ("microblaze: Use simple memset implementation from lib/string.c") where generic memset implementation is used when OPT_LIB_FUNCTION is not defined. 2022-04-21microblaze: Do loop unrolling for optimized memset implementationMichal Simek1-1/+12
Align implementation with memcpy and memmove where also remaining bytes are copied via final switch case instead of using simple implementations which loop. But this alignment has much stronger reason and definitely aligning implementation is not the key point here. It is just good to have in mind that the same technique is used already there. In GCC 10, now -ftree-loop-distribute-patterns optimization is on at O2. This optimization causes GCC to convert the while loop in memset.c into a call to memset. So this optimization is transforming a loop in a memset/memcpy into a call to the function itself. This makes the memset implementation as recursive. "-freestanding" option will disable the built-in library function but it has been added in generic library implementation. In default microblaze kernel defconfig we have CONFIG_OPT_LIB_FUNCTION enabled so it will always pick optimized version of memset which is target specific so we are replacing the while() loop with switch case to avoid recursive memset call. Issue with freestanding was already discussed in connection to commit 33d0f96ffd73 ("lib/string.c: Use freestanding environment") and also this is topic in glibc and gcc. https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=56888 http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/project/glibc/patch/20191121021040.14554-1-sandra@codesourcery.com/ Signed-off-by: Michal Simek <michal.simek@xilinx.com> Signed-off-by: Mahesh Bodapati <mbodapat@xilinx.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/10a432e269a6d3349cf458e4f5792522779cba0d.1645797329.git.michal.simek@xilinx.com
2022-04-21microblaze: Use simple memset implementation from lib/string.cMichal Simek2-18/+4
On microblaze systems which are not using OPT_LIB_FUNCTION only simple memset is used. This function is already implemented in lib/string.c that's why it should be used instead. This change is done in respect of issue fixed by commit 33d0f96ffd73 ("lib/string.c: Use freestanding environment") where gcc-10.x moved -ftree-loop-distribute-patterns optimization is to O2 optimization level. This optimization causes GCC to convert the while loop in memset.c into a call to memset. So This optimization is transforming a loop in a memset/memcpy into a call to the function itself. This makes the memset implementation as recursive. Based on fix above -ffreestanding was used and it needs to be used on Microblaze too but the patch is not adding this flag it removes simple implementation to cause that generic implementation is used where this flag is already setup. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. 2022-02-25uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8()Arnd Bergmann1-9/+9
These two architectures implement 8-byte get_user() through a memcpy() into a four-byte variable, which won't fit. Use a temporary 64-bit variable instead here, and use a double cast the way that risc-v and openrisc do to avoid compile-time warnings. 2022-02-15uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok()Arnd Bergmann1-15/+4
Three architectures check the end of a user access against the address limit without taking a possible overflow into account. Passing a negative length or another overflow in here returns success when it should not. Use the most common correct implementation here, which optimizes for a constant 'size' argument, and turns the common case into a single comparison. 2022-02-14kbuild: unify cmd_copy and cmd_shippedMasahiro Yamada2-2/+2
cmd_copy and cmd_shipped have similar functionality. The difference is that cmd_copy uses 'cp' while cmd_shipped 'cat'. Unify them into cmd_copy because this macro name is more intuitive. Going forward, cmd_copy will use 'cat' to avoid the permission issue. I also thought of 'cp --no-preserve=mode' but this option is not mentioned in the POSIX spec [1], so I am keeping the 'cat' command. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost.
