2019-09-26mm: treewide: clarify pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() namingMark Rutland1-1/+1
The naming of pgtable_page_{ctor,dtor}() seems to have confused a few people, and until recently arm64 used these erroneously/pointlessly for other levels of page table. To make it incredibly clear that these only apply to the PTE level, and to align with the naming of pgtable_pmd_page_{ctor,dtor}(), let's rename them to pgtable_pte_page_{ctor,dtor}(). These changes were generated with the following shell script: ---- git grep -lw 'pgtable_page_.tor' | while read FILE; do sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_ctor/pgtable_pte_page_ctor/}' $FILE; sed -i '{s/pgtable_page_dtor/pgtable_pte_page_dtor/}' $FILE; done ---- ... with the documentation re-flowed to remain under 80 columns, and whitespace fixed up in macros to keep backslashes aligned. There should be no functional change as a result of this patch. 2019-09-25mm: consolidate pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init()Mike Rapoport2-9/+0
Both pgtable_cache_init() and pgd_cache_init() are used to initialize kmem cache for page table allocations on several architectures that do not use PAGE_SIZE tables for one or more levels of the page table hierarchy. Most architectures do not implement these functions and use __weak default NOP implementation of pgd_cache_init(). Since there is no such default for pgtable_cache_init(), its empty stub is duplicated among most architectures. Rename the definitions of pgd_cache_init() to pgtable_cache_init() and drop empty stubs of pgtable_cache_init(). 2019-09-25sh: switch to generic version of pte allocationMike Rapoport1-33/+1
The sh implementation pte_alloc_one(), pte_alloc_one_kernel(), pte_free_kernel() and pte_free() is identical to the generic except of lack of __GFP_ACCOUNT for the user PTEs allocation. 2019-09-25mm: remove quicklist page table cachesNicholas Piggin2-19/+6
Patch series "mm: remove quicklist page table caches". A while ago Nicholas proposed to remove quicklist page table caches [1]. I've rebased his patch on the curren upstream and switched ia64 and sh to use generic versions of PTE allocation. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20190711030339.20892-1-npiggin@gmail.com This patch (of 3): Remove page table allocator "quicklists". These have been around for a long time, but have not got much traction in the last decade and are only used on ia64 and sh architectures. The numbers in the initial commit look interesting but probably don't apply anymore. If anybody wants to resurrect this it's in the git history, but it's unhelpful to have this code and divergent allocator behaviour for minor archs. Also it might be better to instead make more general improvements to page allocator if this is still so slow. 2019-09-04dma-mapping: remove CONFIG_ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAPChristoph Hellwig1-1/+0
CONFIG_ARCH_NO_COHERENT_DMA_MMAP is now functionally identical to !CONFIG_MMU, so remove the separate symbol. The only difference is that arm did not set it for !CONFIG_MMU, but arm uses a separate dma mapping implementation including its own mmap method, which is handled by moving the CONFIG_MMU check in dma_can_mmap so that is only applies to the dma-direct case, just as the other ifdefs for it. 2019-08-22driver core: initialize a default DMA mask for platform deviceChristoph Hellwig5-7/+0
We still treat devices without a DMA mask as defaulting to 32-bits for both mask, but a few releases ago we've started warning about such cases, as they require special cases to work around this sloppyness. Add a dma_mask field to struct platform_device so that we can initialize the dma_mask pointer in struct device and initialize both masks to 32-bits by default, replacing similar functionality in m68k and powerpc. The arch_setup_pdev_archdata hooks is now unused and removed. Note that the code looks a little odd with the various conditionals because we have to support platform_device structures that are statically allocated. 2019-07-25treewide: add "WITH Linux-syscall-note" to SPDX tag of uapi headersMasahiro Yamada2-2/+2
UAPI headers licensed under GPL are supposed to have exception "WITH Linux-syscall-note" so that they can be included into non-GPL user space application code. The exception note is missing in some UAPI headers. Some of them slipped in by the treewide conversion commit b24413180f56 ("License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no license"). Just run: $ git show --oneline b24413180f56 -- arch/x86/include/uapi/asm/ I believe they are not intentional, and should be fixed too. This patch was generated by the following script: git grep -l --not -e Linux-syscall-note --and -e SPDX-License-Identifier \ -- :arch/*/include/uapi/asm/*.h :include/uapi/ :^*/Kbuild | while read file do sed -i -e '/[[:space:]]OR[[:space:]]/s/\(GPL-[^[:space:]]*\)/(\1 WITH Linux-syscall-note)/g' \ -e '/[[:space:]]or[[:space:]]/s/\(GPL-[^[:space:]]*\)/(\1 WITH Linux-syscall-note)/g' \ -e '/[[:space:]]OR[[:space:]]/!{/[[:space:]]or[[:space:]]/!s/\(GPL-[^[:space:]]*\)/\1 WITH Linux-syscall-note/g}' $file done After this patch is applied, there are 5 UAPI headers that do not contain "WITH Linux-syscall-note". 2019-07-19mm/memory_hotplug: allow arch_remove_memory() without CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTREMOVEDavid Hildenbrand1-2/+0
We want to improve error handling while adding memory by allowing to use arch_remove_memory() and __remove_pages() even if CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTREMOVE is not set to e.g., implement something like: arch_add_memory() rc = do_something(); if (rc) { arch_remove_memory(); } We won't get rid of CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTREMOVE for now, as it will require quite some dependencies for memory offlining. 2019-07-17mm, kprobes: generalize and rename notify_page_fault() as kprobe_page_fault()Anshuman Khandual1-16/+2
Architectures which support kprobes have very similar boilerplate around calling kprobe_fault_handler(). Use a helper function in kprobes.h to unify them, based on the x86 code. This changes the behaviour for other architectures when preemption is enabled. Previously, they would have disabled preemption while calling the kprobe handler. However, preemption would be disabled if this fault was due to a kprobe, so we know the fault was not due to a kprobe handler and can simply return failure. This behaviour was introduced in commit a980c0ef9f6d ("x86/kprobes: Refactor kprobes_fault() like kprobe_exceptions_notify()") [anshuman.khandual@arm.com: export kprobe_fault_handler()] Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1561133358-8876-1-git-send-email-anshuman.khandual@arm.com Link: http://lkml.kernel.org/r/1560420444-25737-1-git-send-email-anshuman.khandual@arm.com Signed-off-by: Anshuman Khandual <anshuman.khandual@arm.com> Reviewed-by: Dave Hansen <dave.hansen@linux.intel.com> Cc: Michal Hocko <mhocko@suse.com> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <willy@infradead.org> Cc: Mark Rutland <mark.rutland@arm.com> Cc: Christophe Leroy <christophe.leroy@c-s.fr> Cc: Stephen Rothwell <sfr@canb.auug.org.au> Cc: Andrey Konovalov <andreyknvl@google.com> Cc: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au> Cc: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org> Cc: Russell King <linux@armlinux.org.uk> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Will Deacon <will.deacon@arm.com> Cc: Tony Luck <tony.luck@intel.com> Cc: Fenghua Yu <fenghua.yu@intel.com> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Cc: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Yoshinori Sato <ysato@users.sourceforge.jp> Cc: "David S. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux Pull pidfd updates from Christian Brauner: "This adds two main features. - First, it adds polling support for pidfds. This allows process managers to know when a (non-parent) process dies in a race-free way. The notification mechanism used follows the same logic that is currently used when the parent of a task is notified of a child's death. With this patchset it is possible to put pidfds in an {e}poll loop and get reliable notifications for process (i.e. thread-group) exit. - The second feature compliments the first one by making it possible to retrieve pollable pidfds for processes that were not created using CLONE_PIDFD. A lot of processes get created with traditional PID-based calls such as fork() or clone() (without CLONE_PIDFD). For these processes a caller can currently not create a pollable pidfd. This is a problem for Android's low memory killer (LMK) and service managers such as systemd. Both patchsets are accompanied by selftests. It's perhaps worth noting that the work done so far and the work done in this branch for pidfd_open() and polling support do already see some adoption: - Android is in the process of backporting this work to all their LTS kernels [1] - Service managers make use of pidfd_send_signal but will need to wait until we enable waiting on pidfds for full adoption. - And projects I maintain make use of both pidfd_send_signal and CLONE_PIDFD [2] and will use polling support and pidfd_open() too" [1] https://android-review.googlesource.com/q/topic:%22pidfd+polling+support+4.9+backport%22 https://android-review.googlesource.com/q/topic:%22pidfd+polling+support+4.14+backport%22 https://android-review.googlesource.com/q/topic:%22pidfd+polling+support+4.19+backport%22 [2] https://github.com/lxc/lxc/blob/aab6e3eb73c343231cdde775db938994fc6f2803/src/lxc/start.c#L1753 * tag 'pidfd-updates-v5.3' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux: tests: add pidfd_open() tests arch: wire-up pidfd_open() pid: add pidfd_open() pidfd: add polling selftests pidfd: add polling support

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace Pull force_sig() argument change from Eric Biederman: "A source of error over the years has been that force_sig has taken a task parameter when it is only safe to use force_sig with the current task. The force_sig function is built for delivering synchronous signals such as SIGSEGV where the userspace application caused a synchronous fault (such as a page fault) and the kernel responded with a signal. Because the name force_sig does not make this clear, and because the force_sig takes a task parameter the function force_sig has been abused for sending other kinds of signals over the years. Slowly those have been fixed when the oopses have been tracked down. This set of changes fixes the remaining abusers of force_sig and carefully rips out the task parameter from force_sig and friends making this kind of error almost impossible in the future" * 'siginfo-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (27 commits) signal/x86: Move tsk inside of CONFIG_MEMORY_FAILURE in do_sigbus signal: Remove the signal number and task parameters from force_sig_info signal: Factor force_sig_info_to_task out of force_sig_info signal: Generate the siginfo in force_sig signal: Move the computation of force into send_signal and correct it. signal: Properly set TRACE_SIGNAL_LOSE_INFO in __send_signal signal: Remove the task parameter from force_sig_fault signal: Use force_sig_fault_to_task for the two calls that don't deliver to current signal: Explicitly call force_sig_fault on current signal/unicore32: Remove tsk parameter from __do_user_fault signal/arm: Remove tsk parameter from __do_user_fault signal/arm: Remove tsk parameter from ptrace_break signal/nds32: Remove tsk parameter from send_sigtrap signal/riscv: Remove tsk parameter from do_trap signal/sh: Remove tsk parameter from force_sig_info_fault signal/um: Remove task parameter from send_sigtrap signal/x86: Remove task parameter from send_sigtrap signal: Remove task parameter from force_sig_mceerr signal: Remove task parameter from force_sig signal: Remove task parameter from force_sigsegv ...

2019-06-26arch/sh: Check for kprobe trap number before trying to handle a kprobe trapMichael Karcher1-1/+2
The DIE_TRAP notifier chain is run both for kprobe traps and for BUG/WARN traps. The kprobe code assumes to be only called for BREAKPOINT_INSTRUCTION, and concludes to have hit a concurrently removed kprobe if it finds anything else at the faulting locations. This includes TRAPA_BUG_OPCODE used for BUG and WARN. The consequence is that kprobe_handler returns 1. This makes kprobe_exceptions_notify return NOTIFY_STOP, and prevents handling the BUG statement. Convert kdump documentation to ReST and add it to the user faced manual, as the documents are mainly focused on sysadmins that would be enabling kdump. Note: the vmcoreinfo.rst has one very long title on one of its sub-sections: PG_lru|PG_private|PG_swapcache|PG_swapbacked|PG_slab|PG_hwpoision|PG_head_mask|PAGE_BUDDY_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_buddy)|PAGE_OFFLINE_MAPCOUNT_VALUE(~PG_offline) I opted to break this one, into two entries with the same content, in order to make it easier to display after being parsed in html and PDF. The conversion is actually: - add blank lines and identation in order to identify paragraphs; - fix tables markups; - add some lists markups; - mark literal blocks; - adjust title markups. At its new index.rst, let's add a :orphan: while this is not linked to the main index.rst file, in order to avoid build warnings. 2019-06-10sh: configs: Remove useless UEVENT_HELPER_PATHKrzysztof Kozlowski47-47/+0
Remove the CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER_PATH because: 1. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev"). 2019-06-03sh: no need to check return value of debugfs_create functionsGreg Kroah-Hartman5-50/+13
When calling debugfs functions, there is no need to ever check the return value. The function can work or not, but the code logic should never do something different based on this. 2019-05-29signal: Remove the task parameter from force_sig_faultEric W. Biederman4-5/+5
As synchronous exceptions really only make sense against the current task (otherwise how are you synchronous) remove the task parameter from from force_sig_fault to make it explicit that is what is going on. The two known exceptions that deliver a synchronous exception to a stopped ptraced task have already been changed to force_sig_fault_to_task. The callers have been changed with the following emacs regular expression (with obvious variations on the architectures that take more arguments) to avoid typos: force_sig_fault[(]\([^,]+\)[,]\([^,]+\)[,]\([^,]+\)[,]\W+current[)] -> force_sig_fault(\1,\2,\3) Signed-off-by: "Eric W.
