2023-03-09char: pcmcia: remove all the driversJiri Slaby1-1912/+0
These char PCMCIA drivers are buggy[1] and receive only minimal care. It was concluded[2], that we should try to remove most pcmcia drivers completely. Let's start with these char broken one. Note that I also removed a UAPI header: include/uapi/linux/cm4000_cs.h. I found only coccinelle tests mentioning some ioctl constants from that file. But they are not actually used. Anyway, should someone complain, we may reintroduce the header (or its parts). 2023-01-19Revert "char: pcmcia: cm4000_cs: Replace mdelay with usleep_range in ↵Duoming Zhou1-2/+4
set_protocol" This reverts commit be826ada52f1fcabed5b5217c94609ebf5967211. The function monitor_card() is a timer handler that runs in an atomic context, but it calls usleep_range() that can sleep. As a result, the sleep-in-atomic-context bugs will happen. The process is shown below: (atomic context) monitor_card() set_protocol() usleep_range() //sleep The origin commit c1986ee9bea3 ("[PATCH] New Omnikey Cardman 4000 driver") works fine. 2021-09-25cm4000_cs: Use struct_group() to zero struct cm4000_dev regionKees Cook1-5/+4
In preparation for FORTIFY_SOURCE performing compile-time and run-time field bounds checking for memset(), avoid intentionally writing across neighboring fields. Add struct_group() to mark region of struct cm4000_dev that should be initialized to zero. 2021-05-27char: pcmcia: error out if 'num_bytes_read' is greater than 4 in set_protocol()Yu Kuai1-0/+4
Theoretically, it will cause index out of bounds error if 'num_bytes_read' is greater than 4. As we expect it(and was tested) never to be greater than 4, error out if it happens. 2020-02-23pcmcia: Distribute switch variables for initializationKees Cook1-1/+3
Variables declared in a switch statement before any case statements cannot be automatically initialized with compiler instrumentation (as they are not part of any execution flow). With GCC's proposed automatic stack variable initialization feature, this triggers a warning (and they don't get initialized). Clang's automatic stack variable initialization (via CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL=y) doesn't throw a warning, but it also doesn't initialize such variables[1]. Note that these warnings (or silent skipping) happen before the dead-store elimination optimization phase, so even when the automatic initializations are later elided in favor of direct initializations, the warnings remain. To avoid these problems, move such variables into the "case" where they're used or lift them up into the main function body. drivers/char/pcmcia/cm4000_cs.c: In function ‘monitor_card’: drivers/char/pcmcia/cm4000_cs.c:734:17: warning: statement will never be executed [-Wswitch-unreachable] 734 | unsigned char flags0; | ^~~~~~ [1] https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44916 Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <keescook@chromium.org> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20200220062308.69032-1-keescook@chromium.org Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@linuxfoundation.org>
2019-05-06*: convert stream-like files from nonseekable_open -> stream_openKirill Smelkov1-1/+1
Using scripts/coccinelle/api/stream_open.cocci added in 10dce8af3422 ("fs: stream_open - opener for stream-like files so that read and write can run simultaneously without deadlock"), search and convert to stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods in file_operations which assume @offset access. I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert - and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci limitations. The script also does not convert files that should be valid to convert, but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek for unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g. drivers/input/mousedev.c) Among cases converted 14 were potentially vulnerable to read vs write deadlock (see details in 10dce8af3422): drivers/char/pcmcia/cm4000_cs.c:1685:7-23: ERROR: cm4000_fops: .read() can deadlock .write(); 2019-01-04Remove 'type' argument from access_ok() functionLinus Torvalds1-2/+2
Nobody has actually used the type (VERIFY_READ vs VERIFY_WRITE) argument of the user address range verification function since we got rid of the old racy i386-only code to walk page tables by hand. It existed because the original 80386 would not honor the write protect bit when in kernel mode, so you had to do COW by hand before doing any user access. But we haven't supported that in a long time, and these days the 'type' argument is a purely historical artifact. A discussion about extending 'user_access_begin()' to do the range checking resulted this patch, because there is no way we're going to move the old VERIFY_xyz interface to that model. And it's best done at the end of the merge window when I've done most of my merges, so let's just get this done once and for all. This patch was mostly done with a sed-script, with manual fix-ups for the cases that weren't of the trivial 'access_ok(VERIFY_xyz' form. There were a couple of notable cases: - csky still had the old "verify_area()" name as an alias. - the iter_iov code had magical hardcoded knowledge of the actual values of VERIFY_{READ,WRITE} (not that they mattered, since nothing really used it) - microblaze used the type argument for a debug printout but other than those oddities this should be a total no-op patch. I tried to fix up all architectures, did fairly extensive grepping for access_ok() uses, and the changes are trivial, but I may have missed something. Any missed conversion should be trivially fixable, though. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2018-10-01char: pcmcia: cm4000_cs: Replace mdelay with usleep_range in set_protocolJia-Ju Bai1-2/+2
set_protocol() is never called in atomic context. The call chains ending up at set_protocol() are: [1] set_protocol() <- monitor_card() [2] set_protocol() <- cmm_ioctl() monitor_card() is only set in setup_timer(), and cmm_ioctl() is only set as ".unlocked_ioctl" in file_operations structure "cm4000_fops". Despite never getting called from atomic context, set_protocol() calls mdelay(10), i.e. busy wait for 10ms. That is not necessary and can be replaced with usleep_range to avoid busy waiting. 2010-10-15llseek: automatically add .llseek fopArnd Bergmann1-0/+1
All file_operations should get a .llseek operation so we can make nonseekable_open the default for future file operations without a .llseek pointer. The three cases that we can automatically detect are no_llseek, seq_lseek and default_llseek. For cases where we can we can automatically prove that the file offset is always ignored, we use noop_llseek, which maintains the current behavior of not returning an error from a seek. New drivers should normally not use noop_llseek but instead use no_llseek and call nonseekable_open at open time. Existing drivers can be converted to do the same when the maintainer knows for certain that no user code relies on calling seek on the device file. The generated code is often incorrectly indented and right now contains comments that clarify for each added line why a specific variant was chosen. In the version that gets submitted upstream, the comments will be gone and I will manually fix the indentation, because there does not seem to be a way to do that using coccinelle. Some amount of new code is currently sitting in linux-next that should get the same modifications, which I will do at the end of the merge window. Many thanks to Julia Lawall for helping me learn to write a semantic patch that does all this. ===== begin semantic patch ===== // This adds an llseek= method to all file operations, // as a preparation for making no_llseek the default. // // The rules are // - use no_llseek explicitly if we do nonseekable_open // - use seq_lseek for sequential files // - use default_llseek if we know we access f_pos // - use noop_llseek if we know we don't access f_pos, // but we still want to allow users to call lseek // @ open1 exists @ identifier nested_open; @@ nested_open(...) { <+... nonseekable_open(...) ...+> } @ open exists@ identifier open_f; identifier i, f; identifier open1.nested_open; @@ int open_f(struct inode *i, struct file *f) { <+... 2010-10-05drivers: autoconvert trivial BKL users to private mutexArnd Bergmann1-5/+6
All these files use the big kernel lock in a trivial way to serialize their private file operations, typically resulting from an earlier semi-automatic pushdown from VFS. None of these drivers appears to want to lock against other code, and they all use the BKL as the top-level lock in their file operations, meaning that there is no lock-order inversion problem. Consequently, we can remove the BKL completely, replacing it with a per-file mutex in every case. Using a scripted approach means we can avoid typos. These drivers do not seem to be under active maintainance from my brief investigation. Apologies to those maintainers that I have missed. file=$1 name=$2 if grep -q lock_kernel ${file} ; then if grep -q 'include.*linux.mutex.h' ${file} ; then sed -i '/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>/d' ${file} else sed -i 's/include.*<linux\/smp_lock.h>.*$/include <linux\/mutex.h>/g' ${file} fi sed -i ${file} \ -e "/^#include.*linux.mutex.h/,$ { 1,/^\(static\|int\|long\)/ { /^\(static\|int\|long\)/istatic DEFINE_MUTEX(${name}_mutex); } }" \ -e "s/\(un\)*lock_kernel\>[ ]*()/mutex_\1lock(\&${name}_mutex)/g" \ -e '/[ ]*cycle_kernel_lock();/d' else sed -i -e '/include.*\<smp_lock.h\>/d' ${file} \ -e '/cycle_kernel_lock()/d' fi Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de>

2010-09-29pcmcia: simplify IntTypeDominik Brodowski1-3/+0
IntType was only set to INT_MEMORY (driver pcmciamtd) or INT_MEMORY_AND_IO (all other drivers). As this flags seems to relate to ioport access, make it conditional to the driver having requested IO port access. There are two drivers which do not request IO ports, but did set INT_MEMORY_AND_IO: ray_cs and b43. For those, we consistently only set INT_MEMORY in future. 2010-08-03pcmcia: do not use io_req_t when calling pcmcia_request_io()Dominik Brodowski1-11/+6
Instead of io_req_t, drivers are now requested to fill out struct pcmcia_device *p_dev->resource[0,1] for up to two ioport ranges. After a call to pcmcia_request_io(), the ports found there are reserved, after calling pcmcia_request_configuration(), they may be used. 2010-07-30pcmcia: remove cs_types.hDominik Brodowski1-1/+0
Remove cs_types.h which is no longer needed: Most definitions aren't used at all, a few can be made away with, and two remaining definitions (typedefs, unfortunatley) may be moved to more specific places. 2009-11-09pcmcia: use dynamic debug infrastructure, deprecate CS_CHECK (char)Dominik Brodowski1-44/+27
Convert PCMCIA drivers to use the dynamic debug infrastructure, instead of requiring manual settings of PCMCIA_DEBUG. Only some rare extra debug checks in cm4000_cs.c cm4040_cs.c are now hidden behind a "#ifdef CM4000_DEBUG" or "#ifdef CM4040_DEBUG". Also, remove all usages of the CS_CHECK macro and replace them with proper Linux style calling and return value checking. The extra error reporting may be dropped, as the PCMCIA core already complains about any (non-driver-author) errors.
