CONFIG_EFI_VARS controls the code that exposes EFI variables via sysfs entries, which was deprecated before support for non-Intel architectures was added to EFI. So let's limit its availability to Intel architectures for the time being, and hopefully remove it entirely in the not too distant future. 2020-09-29efi: pstore: disentangle from deprecated efivars moduleArd Biesheuvel1-40/+1
The EFI pstore implementation relies on the 'efivars' abstraction, which encapsulates the EFI variable store in a way that can be overridden by other backing stores, like the Google SMI one. On top of that, the EFI pstore implementation also relies on the efivars.ko module, which is a separate layer built on top of the 'efivars' abstraction that exposes the [deprecated] sysfs entries for each variable that exists in the backing store. Since the efivars.ko module is deprecated, and all users appear to have moved to the efivarfs file system instead, let's prepare for its removal, by removing EFI pstore's dependency on it. 2020-07-09efi/efivars: Expose RT service availability via efivars abstractionArd Biesheuvel1-4/+1
Commit bf67fad19e493b ("efi: Use more granular check for availability for variable services") introduced a check into the efivarfs, efi-pstore and other drivers that aborts loading of the module if not all three variable runtime services (GetVariable, SetVariable and GetNextVariable) are supported. However, this results in efivarfs being unavailable entirely if only SetVariable support is missing, which is only needed if you want to make any modifications. Also, efi-pstore and the sysfs EFI variable interface could be backed by another implementation of the 'efivars' abstraction, in which case it is completely irrelevant which services are supported by the EFI firmware. So make the generic 'efivars' abstraction dependent on the availibility of the GetVariable and GetNextVariable EFI runtime services, and add a helper 'efivar_supports_writes()' to find out whether the currently active efivars abstraction supports writes (and wire it up to the availability of SetVariable for the generic one). Then, use the efivar_supports_writes() helper to decide whether to permit efivarfs to be mounted read-write, and whether to enable efi-pstore or the sysfs EFI variable interface altogether. 2020-03-08efi: Fix a race and a buffer overflow while reading efivars via sysfsVladis Dronov1-9/+20
There is a race and a buffer overflow corrupting a kernel memory while reading an EFI variable with a size more than 1024 bytes via the older sysfs method. This happens because accessing struct efi_variable in efivar_{attr,size,data}_read() and friends is not protected from a concurrent access leading to a kernel memory corruption and, at best, to a crash. 2016-09-09efi: Don't use spinlocks for efi varsSylvain Chouleur1-4/+18
All efivars operations are protected by a spinlock which prevents interruptions and preemption. This is too restricted, we just need a lock preventing concurrency. The idea is to use a semaphore of count 1 and to have two ways of locking, depending on the context: - In interrupt context, we call down_trylock(), if it fails we return an error - In normal context, we call down_interruptible() We don't use a mutex here because the mutex_trylock() function must not be called from interrupt context, whereas the down_trylock() can. All the variables in this list so far are defined to be in the global namespace in the UEFI spec, so this just further ensures we're validating the variables we think we are. Including the guid for entries will become more important in future patches when we decide whether or not to allow deletion of variables based on presence in this list. Got Ben's permission to remove the code of efi-pstore.c and send to linux-efi: https://github.com/BlankOn/linux-debian/blob/master/debian/patches/features/all/efi-autoload-efivars.patch efivars is generally useful to have on EFI systems, and in some cases it may be impossible to load it after a kernel upgrade in order to complete a boot loader update. At the same time we don't want to waste memory on non-EFI systems by making them built-in. Instead, give them module aliases as if they are platform drivers, and register a corresponding platform device whenever EFI runtime services are available. This should trigger udev to load them. It seems people are using 32-bit efibootmgr on top of 64-bit kernels, which will currently fail horribly when using the efivars interface, which is the traditional efibootmgr backend (the other being efivarfs). Since there is no versioning info in the data structure, figure out when we need to munge the structure data via judicious use of is_compat_task(). completed Currently, when mounting pstore file system, a read callback of efi_pstore driver runs mutiple times as below. - In the first read callback, scan efivar_sysfs_list from head and pass a kmsg buffer of a entry to an upper pstore layer. - In the second read callback, rescan efivar_sysfs_list from the entry and pass another kmsg buffer to it. - Repeat the scan and pass until the end of efivar_sysfs_list. In this process, an entry is read across the multiple read function calls. To avoid race between the read and erasion, the whole process above is protected by a spinlock, holding in open() and releasing in close(). At the same time, kmemdup() is called to pass the buffer to pstore filesystem during it. And then, it causes a following lockdep warning. To make the dynamic memory allocation runnable without taking spinlock, holding off a deletion of sysfs entry if it happens while scanning it via efi_pstore, and deleting it after the scan is completed. To implement it, this patch introduces two flags, scanning and deleting, to efivar_entry. On the code basis, it seems that all the scanning and deleting logic is not needed because __efivars->lock are not dropped when reading from the EFI variable store. But, the scanning and deleting logic is still needed because an efi-pstore and a pstore filesystem works as follows. In case an entry(A) is found, the pointer is saved to psi->data. And efi_pstore_read() passes the entry(A) to a pstore filesystem by releasing __efivars->lock. And then, the pstore filesystem calls efi_pstore_read() again and the same entry(A), which is saved to psi->data, is used for resuming to scan a sysfs-list. So, to protect the entry(A), the logic is needed. 2013-05-13efivar: fix oops in efivar_update_sysfs_entries() caused by memory reuseSeiji Aguchi1-5/+3
The loop in efivar_update_sysfs_entries() reuses the same allocation for entries each time it calls efivar_create_sysfs_entry(entry). This is wrong because efivar_create_sysfs_entry() expects to keep the memory it was passed, so the caller may not free it (and may not pass the same memory in multiple times). This leads to the oops below. This registers /sys/firmware/efi/{,systab,efivars/} whenever EFI is enabled and the system is booted with EFI. This allows *) userspace to check for the existence of /sys/firmware/efi as a way to determine whether or it is running on an EFI system. *) 'mount -t efivarfs none /sys/firmware/efi/efivars' without manually loading any modules. [ Also, move the efivar API into vars.c and unconditionally compile it. This allows us to move efivars.c, which now only contains the sysfs variable code, into the firmware/efi directory. Note that the efivars.c filename is kept to maintain backwards compatability with the old efivars.ko module.
