2024-07-11net: ks8851: Fix potential TX stall after interface reopenRonald Wahl1-1/+1
The amount of TX space in the hardware buffer is tracked in the tx_space variable. The initial value is currently only set during driver probing. After closing the interface and reopening it the tx_space variable has the last value it had before close. If it is smaller than the size of the first send packet after reopeing the interface the queue will be stopped. The queue is woken up after receiving a TX interrupt but this will never happen since we did not send anything. This commit moves the initialization of the tx_space variable to the ks8851_net_open function right before starting the TX queue. Also query the value from the hardware instead of using a hard coded value. Only the SPI chip variant is affected by this issue because only this driver variant actually depends on the tx_space variable in the xmit function. 2024-05-15net: ks8851: Fix another TX stall caused by wrong ISR flag handlingRonald Wahl1-17/+1
Under some circumstances it may happen that the ks8851 Ethernet driver stops sending data. Currently the interrupt handler resets the interrupt status flags in the hardware after handling TX. With this approach we may lose interrupts in the time window between handling the TX interrupt and resetting the TX interrupt status bit. When all of the three following conditions are true then transmitting data stops: - TX queue is stopped to wait for room in the hardware TX buffer - no queued SKBs in the driver (txq) that wait for being written to hw - hardware TX buffer is empty and the last TX interrupt was lost This is because reenabling the TX queue happens when handling the TX interrupt status but if the TX status bit has already been cleared then this interrupt will never come. With this commit the interrupt status flags will be cleared before they are handled. That way we stop losing interrupts. The wrong handling of the ISR flags was there from the beginning but with commit 3dc5d4454545 ("net: ks8851: Fix TX stall caused by TX buffer overrun") the issue becomes apparent. 2024-05-04net: ks8851: Queue RX packets in IRQ handler instead of disabling BHsMarek Vasut1-6/+10
Currently the driver uses local_bh_disable()/local_bh_enable() in its IRQ handler to avoid triggering net_rx_action() softirq on exit from netif_rx(). The net_rx_action() could trigger this driver .start_xmit callback, which is protected by the same lock as the IRQ handler, so calling the .start_xmit from netif_rx() from the IRQ handler critical section protected by the lock could lead to an attempt to claim the already claimed lock, and a hang. The local_bh_disable()/local_bh_enable() approach works only in case the IRQ handler is protected by a spinlock, but does not work if the IRQ handler is protected by mutex, i.e. this works for KS8851 with Parallel bus interface, but not for KS8851 with SPI bus interface. Remove the BH manipulation and instead of calling netif_rx() inside the IRQ handler code protected by the lock, queue all the received SKBs in the IRQ handler into a queue first, and once the IRQ handler exits the critical section protected by the lock, dequeue all the queued SKBs and push them all into netif_rx(). At this point, it is safe to trigger the net_rx_action() softirq, since the netif_rx() call is outside of the lock that protects the IRQ handler. 2024-04-09net: ks8851: Handle softirqs at the end of IRQ thread to fix hangMarek Vasut1-1/+5
The ks8851_irq() thread may call ks8851_rx_pkts() in case there are any packets in the MAC FIFO, which calls netif_rx(). This netif_rx() implementation is guarded by local_bh_disable() and local_bh_enable(). The local_bh_enable() may call do_softirq() to run softirqs in case any are pending. One of the softirqs is net_rx_action, which ultimately reaches the driver .start_xmit callback. If that happens, the system hangs. Once the execution reaches ks8851_start_xmit_par(), it calls ks8851_lock_par() again which attempts to claim the already locked spinlock again, and the hang happens. Move the do_softirq() call outside of the spinlock protected section of ks8851_irq() by disabling BHs around the entire spinlock protected section of ks8851_irq() handler. Place local_bh_enable() outside of the spinlock protected section, so that it can trigger do_softirq() without the ks8851_par.c ks8851_lock_par() spinlock being held, and safely call ks8851_start_xmit_par() without attempting to lock the already locked spinlock. Since ks8851_irq() is protected by local_bh_disable()/local_bh_enable() now, replace netif_rx() with __netif_rx() which is not duplicating the local_bh_disable()/local_bh_enable() calls. 2023-12-19net: ks8851: Fix TX stall caused by TX buffer overrunRonald Wahl3-25/+40
There is a bug in the ks8851 Ethernet driver that more data is written to the hardware TX buffer than actually available. This is caused by wrong accounting of the free TX buffer space. The driver maintains a tx_space variable that represents the TX buffer space that is deemed to be free. The ks8851_start_xmit_spi() function adds an SKB to a queue if tx_space is large enough and reduces tx_space by the amount of buffer space it will later need in the TX buffer and then schedules a work item. If there is not enough space then the TX queue is stopped. The worker function ks8851_tx_work() dequeues all the SKBs and writes the data into the hardware TX buffer. The last packet will trigger an interrupt after it was send. Here it is assumed that all data fits into the TX buffer. In the interrupt routine (which runs asynchronously because it is a threaded interrupt) tx_space is updated with the current value from the hardware. Also the TX queue is woken up again. Now it could happen that after data was sent to the hardware and before handling the TX interrupt new data is queued in ks8851_start_xmit_spi() when the TX buffer space had still some space left. When the interrupt is actually handled tx_space is updated from the hardware but now we already have new SKBs queued that have not been written to the hardware TX buffer yet. Since tx_space has been overwritten by the value from the hardware the space is not accounted for. Now we have more data queued then buffer space available in the hardware and ks8851_tx_work() will potentially overrun the hardware TX buffer. In many cases it will still work because often the buffer is written out fast enough so that no overrun occurs but for example if the peer throttles us via flow control then an overrun may happen. This can be fixed in different ways. The most simple way would be to set tx_space to 0 before writing data to the hardware TX buffer preventing the queuing of more SKBs until the TX interrupt has been handled. I have chosen a slightly more efficient (and still rather simple) way and track the amount of data that is already queued and not yet written to the hardware. When new SKBs are to be queued the already queued amount of data is honoured when checking free TX buffer space. I tested this with a setup of two linked KS8851 running iperf3 between the two in bidirectional mode. Before the fix I got a stall after some minutes. 2023-09-20net: ethernet: micrel: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König2-7/+4
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert these drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. Issue found during code review. This bug has no impact as long as the ks8851_net structure is the first element of the ks8851_net_spi structure. As long as the offset to the ks8851_net struct is zero, the container_of() macro is subtracting 0 and therefore no damage done. But if the ks8851_net_spi struct is ever modified such that the ks8851_net struct within it is no longer the first element of the struct, then the bug would manifest itself and cause problems. struct ks8851_net is contained within ks8851_net_spi. ks is contained within kss. kss is the priv_data of the netdev structure. 2022-02-09spi: make remove callback a void functionUwe Kleine-König1-3/+1
The value returned by an spi driver's remove function is mostly ignored. (Only an error message is printed if the value is non-zero that the error is ignored.) So change the prototype of the remove function to return no value. This way driver authors are not tempted to assume that passing an error to the upper layer is a good idea. All drivers are adapted accordingly. There is no intended change of behaviour, all callbacks were prepared to return 0 before. Some of the changes here are not strictly required - const is sometimes cast off but pointer is not used for writing. It seems like it's still better to add the const in case the code changes later or relevant -W flags get enabled for the build. No functional changes. 2021-04-14of: net: pass the dst buffer to of_get_mac_address()Michael Walle1-4/+3
of_get_mac_address() returns a "const void*" pointer to a MAC address. Lately, support to fetch the MAC address by an NVMEM provider was added. But this will only work with platform devices. It will not work with PCI devices (e.g. of an integrated root complex) and esp. not with DSA ports. There is an of_* variant of the nvmem binding which works without devices. The returned data of a nvmem_cell_read() has to be freed after use. On the other hand the return of_get_mac_address() points to some static data without a lifetime. The trick for now, was to allocate a device resource managed buffer which is then returned. This will only work if we have an actual device. Change it, so that the caller of of_get_mac_address() has to supply a buffer where the MAC address is written to. Unfortunately, this will touch all drivers which use the of_get_mac_address(). Usually the code looks like: const char *addr; addr = of_get_mac_address(np); if (!IS_ERR(addr)) ether_addr_copy(ndev->dev_addr, addr); This can then be simply rewritten as: of_get_mac_address(np, ndev->dev_addr); Sometimes is_valid_ether_addr() is used to test the MAC address. of_get_mac_address() already makes sure, it just returns a valid MAC address. Thus we can just test its return code. But we have to be careful if there are still other sources for the MAC address before the of_get_mac_address(). In this case we have to keep the is_valid_ether_addr() call. The following coccinelle patch was used to convert common cases to the new style. Afterwards, I've manually gone over the drivers and fixed the return code variable: either used a new one or if one was already available use that. When it makes sense, just remove the lvalue assignment and the local. Other times, just remove the offending code, and occasionally, just mark the variable as maybe unused since it could be used in an ifdef or debug scenario. Only compile tested with W=1.
