2022-08-11virtio_pmem: set device ready in probe()Jason Wang1-0/+7
The NVDIMM region could be available before the virtio_device_ready() that is called by virtio_dev_probe(). This means the driver tries to use device before DRIVER_OK which violates the spec, fixing this by set device ready before the nvdimm_pmem_region_create(). Note that this means the virtio_pmem_host_ack() could be triggered before the creation of the nd region, this is safe since the pmem_lock has been initialized and whether or not any available buffer is added before is validated by virtio_pmem_host_ack(). 2022-08-11virtio_pmem: initialize provider_data through nd_region_descJason Wang1-1/+1
We used to initialize the provider_data manually after nvdimm_pemm_region_create(). This seems to be racy if the flush is issued before the initialization of provider_data[1]. Fixing this by initializing the provider_data through nd_region_desc to make sure the provider_data is ready after the pmem is created. 2022-07-26cxl/region: Introduce cxl_pmem_region objectsDan Williams1-7/+21
The LIBNVDIMM subsystem is a platform agnostic representation of system NVDIMM / persistent memory resources. To date, the CXL subsystem's interaction with LIBNVDIMM has been to register an nvdimm-bridge device and cxl_nvdimm objects to proxy CXL capabilities into existing LIBNVDIMM subsystem mechanics. With regions the approach is the same. Create a new cxl_pmem_region object to proxy CXL region details into a LIBNVDIMM definition. With this enabling LIBNVDIMM can partition CXL persistent memory regions with legacy namespace labels. A follow-on patch will add CXL region label and CXL namespace label support to persist region configurations across driver reload / system-reset events. 2022-07-18pagemap,pmem: introduce ->memory_failure()Shiyang Ruan1-0/+17
When memory-failure occurs, we call this function which is implemented by each kind of devices. For the fsdax case, pmem device driver implements it. Pmem device driver will find out the filesystem in which the corrupted page located in. With dax_holder notify support, we are able to notify the memory failure from pmem driver to upper layers. If there is something not support in the notify routine, memory_failure will fall back to the generic hanlder. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl Pull cxl updates from Dan Williams: "Compute Express Link (CXL) updates for this cycle. The highlight is new driver-core infrastructure and CXL subsystem changes for allowing lockdep to validate device_lock() usage. Thanks to PeterZ for setting me straight on the current capabilities of the lockdep API, and Greg acked it as well. On the CXL ACPI side this update adds support for CXL _OSC so that platform firmware knows that it is safe to still grant Linux native control of PCIe hotplug and error handling in the presence of CXL devices. A circular dependency problem was discovered between suspend and CXL memory for cases where the suspend image might be stored in CXL memory where that image also contains the PCI register state to restore to re-enable the device. Disable suspend for now until an architecture is defined to clarify that conflict. Lastly a collection of reworks, fixes, and cleanups to the CXL subsystem where support for snooping mailbox commands and properly handling the "mem_enable" flow are the highlights. 2022-05-16pmem: implement pmem_recovery_write()Jane Chu1-8/+79
The recovery write thread started out as a normal pwrite thread and when the filesystem was told about potential media error in the range, filesystem turns the normal pwrite to a dax_recovery_write. The recovery write consists of clearing media poison, clearing page HWPoison bit, reenable page-wide read-write permission, flush the caches and finally write. A competing pread thread will be held off during the recovery process since data read back might not be valid, and this is achieved by clearing the badblock records after the recovery write is complete. Competing recovery write threads are already serialized by writer lock held by dax_iomap_rw(). Introduce dax_recovery_write() operation. The function is used to recover a dax range that contains poison. Typical use case is when a user process receives a SIGBUS with si_code BUS_MCEERR_AR indicating poison(s) in a dax range, in response, the user process issues a pwrite() to the page-aligned dax range, thus clears the poison and puts valid data in the range. When the guest tries to do set_memory_uc() and instructs cpa_flush() to do clean caches that results in taking another fault / exception perhaps because the VMM unmapped the page from the guest." Since the driver has special knowledge to handle NP or UC, mark the poisoned page with NP and let driver handle it when it comes down to repair. Please refer to discussions here for more details. https://lore.kernel.org/all/CAPcyv4hrXPb1tASBZUg-GgdVs0OOFKXMXLiHmktg_kFi7YBMyQ@mail.gmail.com/ Now since poisoned page is marked as not-present, in order to avoid writing to a not-present page and trigger kernel Oops, also fix pmem_do_write(). 2022-04-29nvdimm: Allow overwrite in the presence of disabled dimmsDan Williams1-5/+0
It is not clear why the original implementation of overwrite support required the dimm driver to be active before overwrite could proceed. In fact that can lead to cases where the kernel retains an invalid cached copy of the labels from before the overwrite. Unfortunately the kernel has not only allowed that case, but enforced it. Going forward, allow for overwrite to happen while the label area is offline, and follow-on with updates to 'ndctl sanitize-dimm --overwrite' to trigger the label area invalidation by default. 2022-04-29nvdimm: Fix firmware activation deadlock scenariosDan Williams1-9/+0
Lockdep reports the following deadlock scenarios for CXL root device power-management, device_prepare(), operations, and device_shutdown() operations for 'nd_region' devices: Chain exists of: &nvdimm_region_key --> &nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex --> system_transition_mutex Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- lock(system_transition_mutex); lock(&nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex); lock(system_transition_mutex); lock(&nvdimm_region_key); Chain exists of: &cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key --> acpi_scan_lock --> &cxl_root_key Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- lock(&cxl_root_key); lock(acpi_scan_lock); lock(&cxl_root_key); lock(&cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key); These stem from holding nvdimm_bus_lock() over hibernate_quiet_exec() which walks the entire system device topology taking device_lock() along the way. The nvdimm_bus_lock() is protecting against unregistration, multiple simultaneous ops callers, and preventing activate_show() from racing activate_store(). For the first 2, the lock is redundant. Unregistration already flushes all ops users, and sysfs already prevents multiple threads to be active in an ops handler at the same time. For the last userspace should already be waiting for its last activate_store() to complete, and does not need activate_show() to flush the write side, so this lock usage can be deleted in these attributes. 2022-04-29nvdimm: Replace lockdep_mutex with local lock classesDan Williams8-15/+37
In response to an attempt to expand dev->lockdep_mutex for device_lock() validation [1], Peter points out [2] that the lockdep API already has the ability to assign a dedicated lock class per subsystem device-type. Use lockdep_set_class() to override the default device_lock() '__lockdep_no_validate__' class for each NVDIMM subsystem device-type. This enables lockdep to detect deadlocks and recursive locking within the device-driver core and the subsystem. 2022-03-12nvdimm/blk: Delete the block-aperture window driverDan Williams3-359/+4
Block Aperture Window support was an attempt to layer an error model over PMEM for platforms that did not support machine-check-recovery. However, it was abandoned before it ever shipped, and only ever existed in the ACPI specification. Meanwhile Linux has carried a large pile of dead code for non-shipping infrastructure. For years it has been off to the side out of the way, but now CXL and recent directions with DAX support have the potential to collide with this code. In preparation for adding discontiguous namespace support, a pre-requisite for the nvdimm subsystem to replace device-mapper for striping + concatenation use cases, delete BLK aperture support. On the obscure chance that some hardware vendor shipped support for this mode, note that the driver will still keep BLK space reserved in the label area. So an end user in this case would still have the opportunity to report the regression to get BLK-mode support restored without risking the data they have on that device. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl Pull cxl updates from Dan Williams: "More preparation and plumbing work in the CXL subsystem. From an end user perspective the highlight here is lighting up the CXL Persistent Memory related commands (label read / write) with the generic ioctl() front-end in LIBNVDIMM. Otherwise, the ability to instantiate new persistent and volatile memory regions is still on track for v5.17. Summary: - Fix support for platforms that do not enumerate every ACPI0016 (CXL Host Bridge) in the CHBS (ACPI Host Bridge Structure). - Introduce a common pci_find_dvsec_capability() helper, clean up open coded implementations in various drivers. - Add 'cxl_test' for regression testing CXL subsystem ABIs. 'cxl_test' is a module built from tools/testing/cxl/ that mocks up a CXL topology to augment the nascent support for emulation of CXL devices in QEMU. - Convert libnvdimm to use the uuid API. - Complete the definition of CXL namespace labels in libnvdimm. - Tunnel libnvdimm label operations from nd_ioctl() back to the CXL mailbox driver. Enable 'ndctl {read,write}-labels' for CXL. - Continue to sort and refactor functionality into distinct driver and core-infrastructure buckets. For example, mailbox handling is now a generic core capability consumed by the PCI and cxl_test drivers" * tag 'cxl-for-5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl: (34 commits) ocxl: Use pci core's DVSEC functionality cxl/pci: Use pci core's DVSEC functionality PCI: Add pci_find_dvsec_capability to find designated VSEC cxl/pci: Split cxl_pci_setup_regs() cxl/pci: Add @base to cxl_register_map cxl/pci: Make more use of cxl_register_map cxl/pci: Remove pci request/release regions cxl/pci: Fix NULL vs ERR_PTR confusion cxl/pci: Remove dev_dbg for unknown register blocks cxl/pci: Convert register block identifiers to an enum cxl/acpi: Do not fail cxl_acpi_probe() based on a missing CHBS cxl/pci: Disambiguate cxl_pci further from cxl_mem Documentation/cxl: Add bus internal docs cxl/core: Split decoder setup into alloc + add tools/testing/cxl: Introduce a mock memory device + driver cxl/mbox: Move command definitions to common location cxl/bus: Populate the target list at decoder create tools/testing/cxl: Introduce a mocked-up CXL port hierarchy cxl/pmem: Add support for multiple nvdimm-bridge objects cxl/pmem: Translate NVDIMM label commands to CXL label commands ...
