2022-12-03nvdimm/region: Move cache management to the region driverDan Williams3-1/+66
Now that cpu_cache_invalidate_memregion() is generically available, use it to centralize CPU cache management in the nvdimm region driver. This trades off removing redundant per-dimm CPU cache flushing with an opportunistic flush on every region disable event to cover the case of sensitive dirty data in the cache being written back to media after a secure erase / overwrite event. 2022-12-01libnvdimm: Introduce CONFIG_NVDIMM_SECURITY_TEST flagDave Jiang3-1/+24
nfit_test overrode the security_show() sysfs attribute function in nvdimm dimm_devs in order to allow testing of security unlock. With the introduction of CXL security commands, the trick to override security_show() becomes significantly more complicated. By introdcing a security flag CONFIG_NVDIMM_SECURITY_TEST, libnvdimm can just toggle the check via a compile option. In addition the original override can can be removed from tools/testing/nvdimm/. The flag will also be used to bypass cpu_cache_invalidate_memregion() when set in a different commit. This allows testing on QEMU with nfit_test or cxl_test since cpu_cache_has_invalidate_memregion() checks whether X86_FEATURE_HYPERVISOR cpu feature flag is set on x86. 2022-12-01nvdimm/cxl/pmem: Add support for master passphrase disable security commandDave Jiang1-7/+26
The original nvdimm_security_ops ->disable() only supports user passphrase for security disable. The CXL spec introduced the disabling of master passphrase. Add a ->disable_master() callback to support this new operation and leaving the old ->disable() mechanism alone. A "disable_master" command is added for the sysfs attribute in order to allow command to be issued from userspace. ndctl will need enabling in order to utilize this new operation. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton: - Yu Zhao's Multi-Gen LRU patches are here. They've been under test in linux-next for a couple of months without, to my knowledge, any negative reports (or any positive ones, come to that). - Also the Maple Tree from Liam Howlett. An overlapping range-based tree for vmas. It it apparently slightly more efficient in its own right, but is mainly targeted at enabling work to reduce mmap_lock contention. Liam has identified a number of other tree users in the kernel which could be beneficially onverted to mapletrees. Yu Zhao has identified a hard-to-hit but "easy to fix" lockdep splat at [1]. This has yet to be addressed due to Liam's unfortunately timed vacation. He is now back and we'll get this fixed up. - Dmitry Vyukov introduces KMSAN: the Kernel Memory Sanitizer. It uses clang-generated instrumentation to detect used-unintialized bugs down to the single bit level. KMSAN keeps finding bugs. New ones, as well as the legacy ones. - Yang Shi adds a userspace mechanism (madvise) to induce a collapse of memory into THPs. - Zach O'Keefe has expanded Yang Shi's madvise(MADV_COLLAPSE) to support file/shmem-backed pages. - userfaultfd updates from Axel Rasmussen - zsmalloc cleanups from Alexey Romanov - cleanups from Miaohe Lin: vmscan, hugetlb_cgroup, hugetlb and memory-failure - Huang Ying adds enhancements to NUMA balancing memory tiering mode's page promotion, with a new way of detecting hot pages. - memcg updates from Shakeel Butt: charging optimizations and reduced memory consumption. - memcg cleanups from Kairui Song. - memcg fixes and cleanups from Johannes Weiner. - Vishal Moola provides more folio conversions - Zhang Yi removed ll_rw_block() :( - migration enhancements from Peter Xu - migration error-path bugfixes from Huang Ying - Aneesh Kumar added ability for a device driver to alter the memory tiering promotion paths. For optimizations by PMEM drivers, DRM drivers, etc. - vma merging improvements from Jakub Matěn. - NUMA hinting cleanups from David Hildenbrand. - xu xin added aditional userspace visibility into KSM merging activity. - THP & KSM code consolidation from Qi Zheng. - more folio work from Matthew Wilcox. - KASAN updates from Andrey Konovalov. - DAMON cleanups from Kaixu Xia. - DAMON work from SeongJae Park: fixes, cleanups. - hugetlb sysfs cleanups from Muchun Song. - Mike Kravetz fixes locking issues in hugetlbfs and in hugetlb core. 2022-09-30libnvdimm/region: Allow setting align attribute on regions without mappingsTyler Hicks1-5/+3
The alignment constraint for namespace creation in a region was increased, from 2M to 16M, for non-PowerPC architectures in v5.7 with commit 2522afb86a8c ("libnvdimm/region: Introduce an 'align' attribute"). The thought behind the change was that region alignment should be uniform across all architectures and, since PowerPC had the largest alignment constraint of 16M, all architectures should conform to that alignment. The change regressed namespace creation in pre-defined regions that relied on 2M alignment but a workaround was provided in the form of a sysfs attribute, named 'align', that could be adjusted to a non-default alignment value. However, the sysfs attribute's store function returned an error (-ENXIO) when userspace attempted to change the alignment of a region that had no mappings. This affected 2M aligned regions of volatile memory that were defined in a device tree using "pmem-region" and created by the of_pmem_region_driver, since those regions do not contain mappings (ndr_mappings is 0). Allow userspace to set the align attribute on pre-existing regions that do not have mappings so that namespaces can still be within those regions, despite not being aligned to 16M. 2022-08-11virtio_pmem: set device ready in probe()Jason Wang1-0/+7
The NVDIMM region could be available before the virtio_device_ready() that is called by virtio_dev_probe(). This means the driver tries to use device before DRIVER_OK which violates the spec, fixing this by set device ready before the nvdimm_pmem_region_create(). Note that this means the virtio_pmem_host_ack() could be triggered before the creation of the nd region, this is safe since the pmem_lock has been initialized and whether or not any available buffer is added before is validated by virtio_pmem_host_ack(). 2022-08-11virtio_pmem: initialize provider_data through nd_region_descJason Wang1-1/+1
We used to initialize the provider_data manually after nvdimm_pemm_region_create(). This seems to be racy if the flush is issued before the initialization of provider_data[1]. Fixing this by initializing the provider_data through nd_region_desc to make sure the provider_data is ready after the pmem is created. 2022-07-26cxl/region: Introduce cxl_pmem_region objectsDan Williams1-7/+21
The LIBNVDIMM subsystem is a platform agnostic representation of system NVDIMM / persistent memory resources. To date, the CXL subsystem's interaction with LIBNVDIMM has been to register an nvdimm-bridge device and cxl_nvdimm objects to proxy CXL capabilities into existing LIBNVDIMM subsystem mechanics. With regions the approach is the same. Create a new cxl_pmem_region object to proxy CXL region details into a LIBNVDIMM definition. With this enabling LIBNVDIMM can partition CXL persistent memory regions with legacy namespace labels. A follow-on patch will add CXL region label and CXL namespace label support to persist region configurations across driver reload / system-reset events. The highlight is new driver-core infrastructure and CXL subsystem changes for allowing lockdep to validate device_lock() usage. Thanks to PeterZ for setting me straight on the current capabilities of the lockdep API, and Greg acked it as well. On the CXL ACPI side this update adds support for CXL _OSC so that platform firmware knows that it is safe to still grant Linux native control of PCIe hotplug and error handling in the presence of CXL devices. A circular dependency problem was discovered between suspend and CXL memory for cases where the suspend image might be stored in CXL memory where that image also contains the PCI register state to restore to re-enable the device. 2022-05-16pmem: implement pmem_recovery_write()Jane Chu1-8/+79
The recovery write thread started out as a normal pwrite thread and when the filesystem was told about potential media error in the range, filesystem turns the normal pwrite to a dax_recovery_write. The recovery write consists of clearing media poison, clearing page HWPoison bit, reenable page-wide read-write permission, flush the caches and finally write. A competing pread thread will be held off during the recovery process since data read back might not be valid, and this is achieved by clearing the badblock records after the recovery write is complete. Competing recovery write threads are already serialized by writer lock held by dax_iomap_rw(). Introduce dax_recovery_write() operation. The function is used to recover a dax range that contains poison. Typical use case is when a user process receives a SIGBUS with si_code BUS_MCEERR_AR indicating poison(s) in a dax range, in response, the user process issues a pwrite() to the page-aligned dax range, thus clears the poison and puts valid data in the range. The set_memory_uc() approach doesn't work well in all cases. As Dan pointed out when "The VMM unmapped the bad page from guest physical space and passed the machine check to the guest." "The guest gets virtual #MC on an access to that page. When the guest tries to do set_memory_uc() and instructs cpa_flush() to do clean caches that results in taking another fault / exception perhaps because the VMM unmapped the page from the guest." Since the driver has special knowledge to handle NP or UC, mark the poisoned page with NP and let driver handle it when it comes down to repair. 2022-04-29nvdimm: Allow overwrite in the presence of disabled dimmsDan Williams1-5/+0
It is not clear why the original implementation of overwrite support required the dimm driver to be active before overwrite could proceed. In fact that can lead to cases where the kernel retains an invalid cached copy of the labels from before the overwrite. Unfortunately the kernel has not only allowed that case, but enforced it. Going forward, allow for overwrite to happen while the label area is offline, and follow-on with updates to 'ndctl sanitize-dimm --overwrite' to trigger the label area invalidation by default. Lockdep reports the following deadlock scenarios for CXL root device power-management, device_prepare(), operations, and device_shutdown() operations for 'nd_region' devices: Chain exists of: &nvdimm_region_key --> &nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex --> system_transition_mutex Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- lock(system_transition_mutex); lock(&nvdimm_bus->reconfig_mutex); lock(system_transition_mutex); lock(&nvdimm_region_key); Chain exists of: &cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key --> acpi_scan_lock --> &cxl_root_key Possible unsafe locking scenario: CPU0 CPU1 ---- ---- lock(&cxl_root_key); lock(acpi_scan_lock); lock(&cxl_root_key); lock(&cxl_nvdimm_bridge_key); These stem from holding nvdimm_bus_lock() over hibernate_quiet_exec() which walks the entire system device topology taking device_lock() along the way. The nvdimm_bus_lock() is protecting against unregistration, multiple simultaneous ops callers, and preventing activate_show() from racing activate_store(). For the first 2, the lock is redundant. Unregistration already flushes all ops users, and sysfs already prevents multiple threads to be active in an ops handler at the same time. For the last userspace should already be waiting for its last activate_store() to complete, and does not need activate_show() to flush the write side, so this lock usage can be deleted in these attributes. In response to an attempt to expand dev->lockdep_mutex for device_lock() validation [1], Peter points out [2] that the lockdep API already has the ability to assign a dedicated lock class per subsystem device-type. Use lockdep_set_class() to override the default device_lock() '__lockdep_no_validate__' class for each NVDIMM subsystem device-type. This enables lockdep to detect deadlocks and recursive locking within the device-driver core and the subsystem. The hot add/remove behavior is validated with extensions to the cxl_test unit test environment and this test in the cxl-cli test suite: https://github.com/pmem/ndctl/blob/djbw/for-74/cxl/test/cxl-topology.sh Summary: - Add a driver for 'struct cxl_memdev' objects responsible for CXL.mem operation as distinct from 'cxl_pci' mailbox operations. Its primary responsibility is enumerating an endpoint 'struct cxl_port' and all the 'struct cxl_port' instances between an endpoint and the CXL platform root. - Add a driver for 'struct cxl_port' objects responsible for enumerating and operating all Host-managed Device Memory (HDM) decoder resources between the platform-level CXL memory description, all intervening host bridges / switches, and the HDM resources in endpoints. - Update the cxl_pci driver to validate CXL.mem operation precursors to HDM decoder operation like ready-polling, and legacy CXL 1.1 DVSEC based CXL.mem configuration. - Add basic lockdep coverage for usage of device_lock() on CXL subsystem objects similar to what exists for LIBNVDIMM. Include a compile-time switch for which subsystem to validate at run-time. - Update cxl_test to emulate a one level switch topology. - Document a "Theory of Operation" for the subsystem. - Add 'numa_node' and 'serial' attributes to cxl_memdev sysfs - Include miscellaneous fixes for spec / QEMU CXL emulation compatibility and static analysis reports" * tag 'cxl-for-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/cxl/cxl: (48 commits) cxl/core/port: Fix NULL but dereferenced coccicheck error cxl/port: Hold port reference until decoder release cxl/port: Fix endpoint refcount leak cxl/core: Fix cxl_device_lock() class detection cxl/core/port: Fix unregister_port() lock assertion cxl/regs: Fix size of CXL Capability Header Register cxl/core/port: Handle invalid decoders cxl/core/port: Fix / relax decoder target enumeration tools/testing/cxl: Add a physical_node link tools/testing/cxl: Enumerate mock decoders tools/testing/cxl: Mock one level of switches tools/testing/cxl: Fix root port to host bridge assignment tools/testing/cxl: Mock dvsec_ranges() cxl/core/port: Add endpoint decoders cxl/core: Move target_list out of base decoder attributes cxl/mem: Add the cxl_mem driver cxl/core/port: Add switch port enumeration cxl/memdev: Add numa_node attribute cxl/pci: Emit device serial number cxl/pci: Implement wait for media active ...
2022-03-23drivers/nvdimm: Fix build failure when CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS is not setKajol Jain2-1/+2
The following build failure occurs when CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS is not set as generic pmu functions are not visible in that scenario. |-- s390-randconfig-r044-20220313 | |-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_migrate_context | |-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_register | `-- nd_perf.c:(.text):undefined-reference-to-perf_pmu_unregister Similar build failure in nds32 architecture: nd_perf.c:(.text+0x21e): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_migrate_context' nd_perf.c:(.text+0x434): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_register' nd_perf.c:(.text+0x57c): undefined reference to `perf_pmu_unregister' Fix this issue by adding check for CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS config option and disabling the nvdimm perf interface incase this config is not set. Also remove function declaration of perf_pmu_migrate_context, perf_pmu_register, perf_pmu_unregister functions from nd.h as these are common pmu functions which are part of perf_event.h and since we are disabling nvdimm perf interface incase CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS option is not set, we not need to declare them in nd.h Also move the platform_device header file addition part from nd.h to nd_perf.c and add stub functions for register_nvdimm_pmu and unregister_nvdimm_pmu functions to handle CONFIG_PERF_EVENTS=n case. 2022-03-12nvdimm/blk: Delete the block-aperture window driverDan Williams3-359/+4
Block Aperture Window support was an attempt to layer an error model over PMEM for platforms that did not support machine-check-recovery. However, it was abandoned before it ever shipped, and only ever existed in the ACPI specification. Meanwhile Linux has carried a large pile of dead code for non-shipping infrastructure. For years it has been off to the side out of the way, but now CXL and recent directions with DAX support have the potential to collide with this code. In preparation for adding discontiguous namespace support, a pre-requisite for the nvdimm subsystem to replace device-mapper for striping + concatenation use cases, delete BLK aperture support. On the obscure chance that some hardware vendor shipped support for this mode, note that the driver will still keep BLK space reserved in the label area. So an end user in this case would still have the opportunity to report the regression to get BLK-mode support restored without risking the data they have on that device. 2022-03-10drivers/nvdimm: Add perf interface to expose nvdimm performance statsKajol Jain2-0/+329
A common interface is added to get performance stats reporting support for nvdimm devices. Added interface defines supported event list, config fields for the event attributes and their corresponding bit values which are exported via sysfs. Interface also added support for pmu register/unregister functions, cpu hotplug feature along with macros for handling events addition via sysfs. It adds attribute groups for format, cpumask and events to the pmu structure. User could use the standard perf tool to access perf events exposed via nvdimm pmu.
