2018-02-12vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacementLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. The next patch from Al will sort out the final differences, and we should be all done. Scripted-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2018-02-07pps: parport: use timespec64 instead of timespecArnd Bergmann1-20/+20
getnstimeofday() is deprecated, so I'm converting this to use ktime_get_real_ts64() as a safe replacement. I considered using ktime_get_real() instead, but since the algorithm here depends on the exact timing, I decided to introduce fewer changes and leave the code that determines the nanoseconds since the last seconds wrap untouched. It's not entirely clear to me whether we should also change the time base to CLOCK_BOOTTIME or CLOCK_TAI. With boottime, we would be independent of changes due to settimeofday() and only see the speed adjustment from the upstream clock source, with the downside of having the signal be at an arbirary offset from the start of the UTC second signal. With CLOCK_TAI, we would use the same offset from the UTC second as before and still suffer from settimeofday() adjustments, but would be less confused during leap seconds. Both boottime and tai only offer usable (i.e. avoiding ktime_t to timespec64 conversion) interfaces for ktime_t though, so either way, changing it wouldn't take significantly more work. CLOCK_MONOTONIC could be used with ktime_get_ts64(), but would lose synchronization across a suspend/resume cycle, which seems worse. 2017-11-22treewide: setup_timer() -> timer_setup()Kees Cook1-2/+2
This converts all remaining cases of the old setup_timer() API into using timer_setup(), where the callback argument is the structure already holding the struct timer_list. These should have no behavioral changes, since they just change which pointer is passed into the callback with the same available pointers after conversion. It handles the following examples, in addition to some other variations. Casting from unsigned long: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, ptr); and forced object casts: void my_callback(struct something *ptr) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, (unsigned long)ptr); become: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); Direct function assignments: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { struct something *ptr = (struct something *)data; ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = my_callback; have a temporary cast added, along with converting the args: void my_callback(struct timer_list *t) { struct something *ptr = from_timer(ptr, t, my_timer); ... } ... ptr->my_timer.function = (TIMER_FUNC_TYPE)my_callback; And finally, callbacks without a data assignment: void my_callback(unsigned long data) { ... } ... setup_timer(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); have their argument renamed to verify they're unused during conversion: void my_callback(struct timer_list *unused) { ... } ... timer_setup(&ptr->my_timer, my_callback, 0); The conversion is done with the following Coccinelle script: spatch --very-quiet --all-includes --include-headers \ -I ./arch/x86/include -I ./arch/x86/include/generated \ -I ./include -I ./arch/x86/include/uapi \ -I ./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I ./include/uapi \ -I ./include/generated/uapi --include ./include/linux/kconfig.h \ --dir . \ --cocci-file ~/src/data/timer_setup.cocci @fix_address_of@ expression e; 2015-10-01ntp/pps: use y2038 safe types in pps_event_timeArnd Bergmann2-5/+3
The pps_event_time uses two 'timespec' structures internally, which suffer from the y2038 problem. The uses of this structure are fairly self-contained in the pps code, so this replaces them all at once. Unfortunately, this includes the sfc ethernet driver aside from the pps subsystem, so we change that one as well. Both touch the same data structure, and there probably is no good way to split the patch into smaller units. Acked-by: Richard Cochran <richardcochran@gmail.com> Acked-by: David S. 2015-10-01ntp/pps: use timespec64 for hardpps()Arnd Bergmann1-1/+3
There is only one user of the hardpps function in the kernel, so it makes sense to atomically change it over to using 64-bit timestamps for y2038 safety. In the hardpps implementation, we also need to change the pps_normtime structure, which is similar to struct timespec and also requires a 64-bit seconds portion. This introduces two temporary variables in pps_kc_event() to do the conversion, they will be removed again in the next step, which seemed preferable to having a larger patch changing it all at the same time. 2013-02-13pps: Move timestamp read into PPS code properGeorge Spelvin1-4/+7
The PPS (Pulse-Per-Second) line discipline has developed a number of unhealthy attachments to core tty data and functions, ultimately leading to its breakage. The previous patches fixed the crashing. This one reduces coupling further by eliminating the timestamp parameter from the dcd_change ldisc method. This reduces header file linkage and makes the extension more generic, and the timestamp read is delayed only slightly, from just before the ldisc->ops->dcd_change method call to just after. 2013-02-13pps: Fix a use-after free bug when unregistering a source.George Spelvin1-4/+10
Remove the cdev from the system (with cdev_del) *before* deallocating it (in pps_device_destruct, called via kobject_put from device_destroy). Also prevent deallocating a device with open file handles. A better long-term fix is probably to remove the cdev from the pps_device entirely, and instead have all devices reference one global cdev. Then the deallocation ordering becomes simpler. But that's more complex and invasive change, so we leave that for later. 2013-02-13pps: Use pps_lookup_dev to reduce ldisc couplingGeorge Spelvin1-6/+4
Now that N_TTY uses tty->disc_data for its private data, 'subclass' ldiscs cannot use ->disc_data for their own private data. (This is a regression is v3.8-rc1) Use pps_lookup_dev to associate the tty with the pps source instead. This fixes a crashing regression in 3.8-rc1. 2013-02-13pps: Add pps_lookup_dev() functionGeorge Spelvin1-0/+33
The PPS serial line discipline wants to attach a PPS device to a tty without changing the tty code to add a struct pps_device * pointer. Since the number of PPS devices in a typical system is generally very low (n=1 is by far the most common), it's practical to search the entire list of allocated pps devices. (We capture the timestamp before the lookup, so the timing isn't affected.) It is a bit ugly that this function, which is part of the in-kernel PPS API, has to be in pps.c as opposed to kapi,c, but that's not something that affects users. 2013-01-19tty: Added a CONFIG_TTY option to allow removal of TTYJoe Millenbach1-1/+1
The option allows you to remove TTY and compile without errors. This saves space on systems that won't support TTY interfaces anyway. bloat-o-meter output is below. The bulk of this patch consists of Kconfig changes adding "depends on TTY" to various serial devices and similar drivers that require the TTY layer. Ideally, these dependencies would occur on a common intermediate symbol such as SERIO, but most drivers "select SERIO" rather than "depends on SERIO", and "select" does not respect dependencies. bloat-o-meter output comparing our previous minimal to new minimal by removing TTY. 2011-03-05pps: make pps_gen_parport depend on BROKENThomas Gleixner1-1/+1
This driver causes hard lockups, when the active clock soure is jiffies. The reason is that it loops with interrupts disabled waiting for a timestamp to be reached by polling getnstimeofday(). Though with a jiffies clocksource, when that code runs on the same CPU which is responsible for updating jiffies, then we loop in circles for ever simply because the timer interrupt cannot update jiffies. So both UP and SMP can be affected. There is no easy fix for that problem so make it depend on BROKEN for now. 2011-01-13pps: add parallel port PPS clientAlexander Gordeev3-0/+266
Add parallel port PPS client. It uses a standard method for capturing timestamps for assert edge transitions: getting a timestamp soon after an interrupt has happened. This is not a very precise source of time information due to interrupt handling delays. However, timestamps for clear edge transitions are much more precise because the interrupt handler continuously polls hardware port until the transition is done. Hardware port operations require only about 1us so the maximum error should not exceed this value. This was my primary goal when developing this client. Clear edge capture could be disabled using clear_wait parameter.
