git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/gregkh/char-misc Pull char/misc driver updates from Greg KH: "Here is the bit set of char/misc drivers for 4.19-rc1 There is a lot here, much more than normal, seems like everyone is writing new driver subsystems these days... Anyway, major things here are: - new FSI driver subsystem, yet-another-powerpc low-level hardware bus - gnss, finally an in-kernel GPS subsystem to try to tame all of the crazy out-of-tree drivers that have been floating around for years, combined with some really hacky userspace implementations. This is only for GNSS receivers, but you have to start somewhere, and this is great to see. Other than that, there are new slimbus drivers, new coresight drivers, new fpga drivers, and loads of DT bindings for all of these and existing drivers. 2018-08-06ptp_qoriq: support automatic configuration for ptp timerYangbo Lu1-3/+108
This patch is to support automatic configuration for ptp timer. If required ptp dts properties are not provided, driver could try to calculate a set of default configurations to initialize the ptp timer. This makes the driver work for many boards which don't have the required ptp dts properties in current kernel. Also the users could set dts properties by themselves according to their requirement. 2018-07-07headers: separate linux/mod_devicetable.h from linux/platform_device.hRandy Dunlap1-0/+1
At over 4000 #includes, <linux/platform_device.h> is the 9th most #included header file in the Linux kernel. It does not need <linux/mod_devicetable.h>, so drop that header and explicitly add <linux/mod_devicetable.h> to source files that need it. 4146 #include <linux/platform_device.h> After this patch, there are 225 files that use <linux/mod_devicetable.h>, for a reduction of around 3900 times that <linux/mod_devicetable.h> does not have to be read & parsed. 225 #include <linux/mod_devicetable.h> This patch was build-tested on 20 different arch-es. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. 2017-11-09x86/pvclock: add setter for pvclock_pvti_cpu0_vaJoao Martins1-1/+1
Right now there is only a pvclock_pvti_cpu0_va() which is defined on kvmclock since: commit dac16fba6fc5 ("x86/vdso: Get pvclock data from the vvar VMA instead of the fixmap") The only user of this interface so far is kvm. This commit adds a setter function for the pvti page and moves pvclock_pvti_cpu0_va to pvclock, which is a more generic place to have it; and would allow other PV clocksources to use it, such as Xen. While moving pvclock_pvti_cpu0_va into pvclock, rename also this function to pvclock_get_pvti_cpu0_va (including its call sites) to be symmetric with the setter (pvclock_set_pvti_cpu0_va). 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-08-02ptp: introduce ptp auxiliary workerGrygorii Strashko2-0/+45
Many PTP drivers required to perform some asynchronous or periodic work, like periodically handling PHC counter overflow or handle delayed timestamp for RX/TX network packets. In most of the cases, such work is implemented using workqueues. Unfortunately, Kernel workqueues might introduce significant delay in work scheduling under high system load and on -RT, which could cause misbehavior of PTP drivers due to internal counter overflow, for example, and there is no way to tune its execution policy and priority manuallly. Hence, The kthread_worker can be used insted of workqueues, as it create separte named kthread for each worker and its its execution policy and priority can be configured using chrt tool. This prblem was reported for two drivers TI CPSW CPTS and dp83640, so instead of modifying each of these driver it was proposed to add PTP auxiliary worker to the PHC subsystem. The patch adds PTP auxiliary worker in PHC subsystem using kthread_worker and kthread_delayed_work and introduces two new PHC subsystem APIs: - long (*do_aux_work)(struct ptp_clock_info *ptp) callback in ptp_clock_info structure, which driver should assign if it require to perform asynchronous or periodic work. Driver should return the delay of the PTP next auxiliary work scheduling time (>=0) or negative value in case further scheduling is not required. - int ptp_schedule_worker(struct ptp_clock *ptp, unsigned long delay) which allows schedule PTP auxiliary work. The name of kthread_worker thread corresponds PTP PHC device name "ptp%d". Signed-off-by: Grygorii Strashko <grygorii.strashko@ti.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

2016-11-16posix-timers: Make them configurableNicolas Pitre1-1/+1
Some embedded systems have no use for them. This removes about 25KB from the kernel binary size when configured out. Corresponding syscalls are routed to a stub logging the attempt to use those syscalls which should be enough of a clue if they were disabled without proper consideration. They are: timer_create, timer_gettime: timer_getoverrun, timer_settime, timer_delete, clock_adjtime, setitimer, getitimer, alarm. The clock_settime, clock_gettime, clock_getres and clock_nanosleep syscalls are replaced by simple wrappers compatible with CLOCK_REALTIME, CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_BOOTTIME only which should cover the vast majority of use cases with very little code. 2016-11-16ptp_clock: Allow for it to be optionalNicolas Pitre1-4/+4
In order to break the hard dependency between the PTP clock subsystem and ethernet drivers capable of being clock providers, this patch provides simple PTP stub functions to allow linkage of those drivers into the kernel even when the PTP subsystem is configured out. Drivers must be ready to accept NULL from ptp_clock_register() in that case. And to make it possible for PTP to be configured out, the select statement in those driver's Kconfig menu entries is converted to the new "imply" statement. This way the PTP subsystem may have Kconfig dependencies of its own, such as POSIX_TIMERS, without having to make those ethernet drivers unavailable if POSIX timers are cconfigured out. And when support for POSIX timers is selected again then the default config option for PTP clock support will automatically be adjusted accordingly. The pch_gbe driver is a bit special as it relies on extra code in drivers/ptp/ptp_pch.c. Therefore we let the make process descend into drivers/ptp/ even if PTP_1588_CLOCK is unselected. 2016-11-10ptp: Introduce a high resolution frequency adjustment method.Richard Cochran1-1/+4
The internal PTP Hardware Clock (PHC) interface limits the resolution for frequency adjustments to one part per billion. However, some hardware devices allow finer adjustment, and making use of the increased resolution improves synchronization measurably on such devices. This patch adds an alternative method that allows finer frequency tuning by passing the scaled ppm value to PHC drivers. This value comes from user space, and it has a resolution of about 0.015 ppb. We also deprecate the older method, anticipating its removal once existing drivers have been converted over. 2016-03-04ptp: Add PTP_SYS_OFFSET_PRECISE for driver crosstimestampingChristopher S. Hall1-0/+27
Currently, network /system cross-timestamping is performed in the PTP_SYS_OFFSET ioctl. The PTP clock driver reads gettimeofday() and the gettime64() callback provided by the driver. The cross-timestamp is best effort where the latency between the capture of system time (getnstimeofday()) and the device time (driver callback) may be significant. The getcrosststamp() callback and corresponding PTP_SYS_OFFSET_PRECISE ioctl allows the driver to perform this device/system correlation when for example cross timestamp hardware is available. Modern Intel systems can do this for onboard Ethernet controllers using the ART counter. There is virtually zero latency between captures of the ART and network device clock. The capabilities ioctl (PTP_CLOCK_GETCAPS), is augmented allowing applications to query whether or not drivers implement the getcrosststamp callback, providing more precise cross timestamping.
