2020-11-19rtc: rework rtc_register_device() resource managementBartosz Golaszewski1-1/+1
rtc_register_device() is a managed interface but it doesn't use devres by itself - instead it marks an rtc_device as "registered" and the devres callback for devm_rtc_allocate_device() takes care of resource release. This doesn't correspond with the design behind devres where managed structures should not be aware of being managed. The correct solution here is to register a separate devres callback for unregistering the device. While at it: rename rtc_register_device() to devm_rtc_register_device() and add it to the list of managed interfaces in devres.rst. This way we can avoid any potential confusion of driver developers who may expect there to exist a corresponding unregister function. 2020-03-16rtc: ds1374: fix possible race conditionAlexandre Belloni1-6/+9
The RTC IRQ is requested before the struct rtc_device is allocated, this may lead to a NULL pointer dereference in the IRQ handler. To fix this issue, allocating the rtc_device struct before requesting the RTC IRQ using devm_rtc_allocate_device, and use rtc_register_device to register the RTC device. 2019-10-23compat_ioctl: move WDIOC handling into wdt driversArnd Bergmann1-0/+1
All watchdog drivers implement the same set of ioctl commands, and fortunately all of them are compatible between 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. Modern drivers always go through drivers/watchdog/wdt.c as an abstraction layer, but older ones implement their own file_operations on a character device for this. Move the handling from fs/compat_ioctl.c into the individual drivers. Note that most of the legacy drivers will never be used on 64-bit hardware, because they are for an old 32-bit SoC implementation, but doing them all at once is safer than trying to guess which ones do or do not need the compat_ioctl handling. 2019-05-06*: convert stream-like files from nonseekable_open -> stream_openKirill Smelkov1-1/+1
Using scripts/coccinelle/api/stream_open.cocci added in 10dce8af3422 ("fs: stream_open - opener for stream-like files so that read and write can run simultaneously without deadlock"), search and convert to stream_open all in-kernel nonseekable_open users for which read and write actually do not depend on ppos and where there is no other methods in file_operations which assume @offset access. I've verified each generated change manually - that it is correct to convert - and each other nonseekable_open instance left - that it is either not correct to convert there, or that it is not converted due to current stream_open.cocci limitations. The script also does not convert files that should be valid to convert, but that currently have .llseek = noop_llseek or generic_file_llseek for unknown reason despite file being opened with nonseekable_open (e.g. drivers/input/mousedev.c) Among cases converted 14 were potentially vulnerable to read vs write deadlock (see details in 10dce8af3422): drivers/char/pcmcia/cm4000_cs.c:1685:7-23: ERROR: cm4000_fops: .read() can deadlock .write(); 2011-02-04RTC: Convert rtc drivers to use the alarm_irq_enable methodJohn Stultz1-27/+10
Some rtc drivers use the ioctl method instead of the alarm_irq_enable method for enabling alarm interupts. With the new virtualized RTC rework, its important for drivers to use the alarm_irq_enable instead. This patch converts the drivers that use the AIE ioctl method to use the alarm_irq_enable method. Other ioctl cmds are left untouched. I have not been able to test or even compile most of these drivers. Any help to make sure this change is correct would be appreciated! 2010-06-03i2c: Remove all i2c_set_clientdata(client, NULL) in driversWolfram Sang1-2/+0
I2C drivers can use the clientdata-pointer to point to private data. As I2C devices are not really unregistered, but merely detached from their driver, it used to be the drivers obligation to clear this pointer during remove() or a failed probe(). As a couple of drivers forgot to do this, it was agreed that it was cleaner if the i2c-core does this clearance when appropriate, as there is no guarantee for the lifetime of the clientdata-pointer after remove() anyhow. This feature was added to the core with commit e4a7b9b04de15f6b63da5ccdd373ffa3057a3681 to fix the faulty drivers. As there is no need anymore to clear the clientdata-pointer, remove all current occurrences in the drivers to simplify the code and prevent confusion. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-12-18rtc: set wakeup capability for I2C and SPI RTC driversAnton Vorontsov1-0/+2
RTC core won't allow wakeup alarms to be set if RTC devices' parent (i.e. i2c_client or spi_device) isn't wakeup capable. For I2C devices there is I2C_CLIENT_WAKE flag exists that we can pass via board info, and if set, I2C core will initialize wakeup capability. For SPI devices there is no such flag at all. I believe that it's not platform code responsibility to allow or disallow wakeups, instead, drivers themselves should set the capability if a device can trigger wakeups. That's what drivers/base/power/sysfs.c says: * It is the responsibility of device drivers to enable (or disable) * wakeup signaling as part of changing device power states, respecting * the policy choices provided through the driver model. I2C and SPI RTC devices send wakeup events via interrupt lines, so we should set the wakeup capability if IRQ is routed. Ideally we should also check irq for wakeup capability before setting device's capability, i.e. if (can_irq_wake(irq)) device_set_wakeup_capable(&client->dev, 1); But there is no can_irq_wake() call exist, and it is not that trivial to implement it for all interrupts controllers and complex/cascaded setups. drivers/base/power/sysfs.c also covers these cases: * Devices may not be able to generate wakeup events from all power * states. Also, the events may be ignored in some configurations; * for example, they might need help from other devices that aren't * active So there is no guarantee that wakeup will actually work, and so I think there is no point in being pedantic wrt checking IRQ wakeup capability. On a PowerPC board with ds1374 RTC I'm getting this error while RTC tries to probe: rtc-ds1374 0-0068: unable to request IRQ This happens because I2C probing code (drivers/of/of_i2c.c) is specifying IRQ0 for 'no irq' case, which is correct. The driver handles this incorrectly, though. This patch fixes it. 2008-06-06rtc-ds1374: rename device to just "ds1374"Jean Delvare1-1/+1
Change the name of the device from "rtc-ds1374" to just "ds1374", to match what all other RTC drivers do. I seem to remember that this name was chosen to avoid possible confusion with an older ds1374 driver, but that driver was removed 3 months ago. 2008-04-30i2c: Convert most new-style drivers to use module aliasingJean Delvare1-0/+7
Based on earlier work by Jon Smirl and Jochen Friedrich. Update most new-style i2c drivers to use standard module aliasing instead of the old driver_name/type driver matching scheme. I've left the video drivers apart (except for SoC camera drivers) as they're a bit more diffcult to deal with, they'll have their own patch later. 2008-04-30i2c: Add support for device alias namesJean Delvare1-1/+2
Based on earlier work by Jon Smirl and Jochen Friedrich. This patch allows new-style i2c chip drivers to have alias names using the official kernel aliasing system and MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE(). At this point, the old i2c driver binding scheme (driver_name/type) is still supported.
