2024-02-08s390/dasd: Remove PRINTK_HEADER and KMSG_COMPONENT definitionsJan Höppner1-8/+0
PRINTK_HEADER was mainly used to prefix log messages with the module name. Most components don't use this definition anymore. Either because there are no log messages being generated anymore, or pr_*() were replaced by dev_*(), which contains device and component information already. PRINTK_HEADER is also dropped in the function dasd_3990_erp_handle_match_erp() in dasd_3990_erp.c from a panic() call as panic() already provides all relevant information. KMSG_COMPONENT was mainly used to identify a component in a long gone kernel message catalog feature. Remove both definition since they're either not used or alternatives make the code slightly shorter and more readable. 2022-09-19s390/dasd: fix Oops in dasd_alias_get_start_dev due to missing pavgroupStefan Haberland1-2/+7
Fix Oops in dasd_alias_get_start_dev() function caused by the pavgroup pointer being NULL. The pavgroup pointer is checked on the entrance of the function but without the lcu->lock being held. Therefore there is a race window between dasd_alias_get_start_dev() and _lcu_update() which sets pavgroup to NULL with the lcu->lock held. Fix by checking the pavgroup pointer with lcu->lock held. 2020-12-17s390/dasd: fix list corruption of lcu listStefan Haberland1-1/+1
In dasd_alias_disconnect_device_from_lcu the device is removed from any list on the LCU. Afterwards the LCU is removed from the lcu list if it does not contain devices any longer. The lcu->lock protects the lcu from parallel updates. But to cancel all workers and wait for completion the lcu->lock has to be unlocked. If two devices are removed in parallel and both are removed from the LCU the first device that takes the lcu->lock again will delete the LCU because it is already empty but the second device also tries to free the LCU which leads to a list corruption of the lcu list. Fix by removing the device right before the lcu is checked without unlocking the lcu->lock in between. 2020-12-17s390/dasd: fix list corruption of pavgroup group listStefan Haberland1-0/+1
dasd_alias_add_device() moves devices to the active_devices list in case of a scheduled LCU update regardless if they have previously been in a pavgroup or not. Example: device A and B are in the same pavgroup. Device A has already been in a pavgroup and the private->pavgroup pointer is set and points to a valid pavgroup. While going through dasd_add_device it is moved from the pavgroup to the active_devices list. In parallel device B might be removed from the same pavgroup in remove_device_from_lcu() which in turn checks if the group is empty and deletes it accordingly because device A has already been removed from there. When now device A enters remove_device_from_lcu() it is tried to remove it from the pavgroup again because the pavgroup pointer is still set and again the empty group will be cleaned up which leads to a list corruption. Fix by setting private->pavgroup to NULL in dasd_add_device. If the device has been the last device on the pavgroup an empty pavgroup remains but this will be cleaned up by the scheduled lcu_update which iterates over all existing pavgroups. 2020-12-17s390/dasd: prevent inconsistent LCU device dataStefan Haberland1-0/+9
Prevent _lcu_update from adding a device to a pavgroup if the LCU still requires an update. The data is not reliable any longer and in parallel devices might have been moved on the lists already. This might lead to list corruptions or invalid PAV grouping. Only add devices to a pavgroup if the LCU is up to date. Additional steps are taken by the scheduled lcu update. 2020-12-17s390/dasd: fix hanging device offline processingStefan Haberland1-1/+9
For an LCU update a read unit address configuration IO is required. This is started using sleep_on(), which has early exit paths in case the device is not usable for IO. For example when it is in offline processing. In those cases the LCU update should fail and not be retried. Therefore lcu_update_work checks if EOPNOTSUPP is returned or not. Commit 41995342b40c ("s390/dasd: fix endless loop after read unit address configuration") accidentally removed the EOPNOTSUPP return code from read_unit_address_configuration(), which in turn might lead to an endless loop of the LCU update in offline processing. Fix by returning EOPNOTSUPP again if the device is not able to perform the request. 2019-08-02s390/dasd: fix endless loop after read unit address configurationStefan Haberland1-6/+16
After getting a storage server event that causes the DASD device driver to update its unit address configuration during a device shutdown there is the possibility of an endless loop in the device driver. In the system log there will be ongoing DASD error messages with RC: -19. The reason is that the loop starting the ruac request only terminates when the retry counter is decreased to 0. But in the sleep_on function there are early exit paths that do not decrease the retry counter. Prevent an endless loop by handling those cases separately. Remove the unnecessary do..while loop since the sleep_on function takes care of retries by itself. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2016-03-17s390/dasd: reorder lcu and device lockStefan Haberland1-173/+53
Reorder lcu and device lock to get rid of the error-prone trylock mechanism. The locking order is lcu lock -> device lock. This protects against changes to the lcu device lists and enables us to iterate over the devices, take the cdev lock and make changes to the device structures. The complicated part is the summary unit check handler that gets an interrupt on one device of the lcu that leads to structural changes of the whole lcu itself. This work needs to be done even if devices on the lcu disappear. So a device independent worker is used. The old approach tried to update some lcu structures and set up the lcu worker in the interrupt context with the device lock held. But this forced the lock order "cdev lock -> lcu lock" that made it hard to have the lcu lock held and iterate over all devices and change them. The new approach is to schedule a device specific worker that gets out of the interrupt context and rid of the device lock for summary unit checks. This worker is able to take the lcu lock and schedule the lcu worker that updates all devices. The time between interrupt and worker execution is no problem because the devices in the lcu reject all I/O in this time with an appropriate error. The dasd driver can deal with this situation and re-drive the I/O later on. Signed-off-by: Stefan Haberland <sth@linux.vnet.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com>

2016-02-23s390/dasd: fix incorrect locking order for LCU device add/removeStefan Haberland1-83/+152
The correct lock order for LCU lock and cdev lock is to take the cdev lock first and afterwards the LCU lock. This is caused by the fact that LCU functions are called in an interrupt context with the cdev lock implicitly hold by CIO. To assure the right locking order but also be able to iterate over devices in a LCU introduce a trylock block that can be called with the device lock for one device hold and then takes the LCU lock and try to lock all devices accounted to this LCU. 2015-10-15s390/dasd: fix list_del corruption after lcu changesStefan Haberland1-1/+4
A summary unit check occurs when the lcu updates the PAV configuration e.g. base PAV assignment or PAV mode at all. This requires the reset of the drivers internal pavgroups. Therefore the alias devices are flushed and moved via a temporary list to the active_devices list where they are not associated with a pavgroup. In conjunction with updates to the base device the pavgroup may be removed since both base_list and alias_list are empty. Unfortunately during alias flush and move to the active_device list from alias_list the pavgroup pointer is not deleted in the device private structure. This leads to a list del_corruption if another lcu_update tries to move the device in the non existent pavgroup. 2010-05-17[S390] dasd: add dynamic pav tolerationStefan Haberland1-0/+8
For base Parallel Access Volume (PAV) there is a fixed mapping of base and alias devices. With dynamic PAV this mapping can be changed so that an alias device is used with another base device. This patch enables the DASD device driver to tolerate dynamic PAV changes. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2009-12-07[S390] dasd: let device initialization wait for LCU setupStefan Weinhuber1-0/+62
The first DASD that is set online for a specific logical control unit has to do certain setup steps on the storage server to make full use of it, for example it will enable PAV. The features and characteristics reported by the storage server will depend on this setup, so all other devices on the same LCU will need to wait for the setup to be finished. 2009-12-07[S390] dasd: improve error recovery for internal I/OStefan Weinhuber1-7/+8
Most of the error conditions reported by a FICON storage server indicate situations which can be recovered. Sometimes the host just needs to retry an I/O request, but sometimes the recovery is more complex and requires the device driver to wait, choose a different path, etc. The DASD device driver has a fully featured error recovery for normal block layer I/O, but not for internal I/O request which are for example used during the device bring up. This can lead to situations where the IPL of a system fails because DASD devices are not properly recognized. This patch will extend the internal I/O handling to use the existing error recovery procedures. 2008-08-01[S390] dasd: Add support for enhanced VM UIDStefan Weinhuber1-1/+3
When z/VM provides two virtual devices (minidisks) that reside on the same real device, both will receive the configuration data from the real device and thus get the same uid. To fix this problem, z/VM provides an additional configuration data record that allows to distinguish between minidisks. z/VM APAR VM64273 needs be installed so this fix has an effect. 2008-04-17[S390] Fix a lot of sparse warnings.Heiko Carstens1-28/+21
Most noteable part of this commit is the new local header file entry.h which contains all the function declarations of functions that get only called from asm code or are arch internal. 2008-01-26[S390] dasd: add hyper PAV support to DASD device driver, part 1Stefan Weinhuber1-0/+903
Parallel access volumes (PAV) is a storage server feature, that allows to start multiple channel programs on the same DASD in parallel. It defines alias devices which can be used as alternative paths to the same disk. With the old base PAV support we only needed rudimentary functionality in the DASD device driver. As the mapping between base and alias devices was static, we just had to export an identifier (uid) and could leave the combining of devices to external layers like a device mapper multipath. Now hyper PAV removes the requirement to dedicate alias devices to specific base devices. Instead each alias devices can be combined with multiple base device on a per request basis. This requires full support by the DASD device driver as now each channel program itself has to identify the target base device. The changes to the dasd device driver and the ECKD discipline are: - Separate subchannel device representation (dasd_device) from block device representation (dasd_block). Only base devices are block devices. - Gather information about base and alias devices and possible combinations. - For each request decide which dasd_device should be used (base or alias) and build specific channel program. - Support summary unit checks, which allow the storage server to upgrade / downgrade between base and hyper PAV at runtime (support is mandatory).
