2021-03-11configfs: fix a use-after-free in __configfs_open_fileDaiyue Zhang1-4/+2
Commit b0841eefd969 ("configfs: provide exclusion between IO and removals") uses ->frag_dead to mark the fragment state, thus no bothering with extra refcount on config_item when opening a file. The configfs_get_config_item was removed in __configfs_open_file, but not with config_item_put. So the refcount on config_item will lost its balance, causing use-after-free issues in some occasions like this: Test: 1. Mount configfs on /config with read-only items: drwxrwx--- 289 root root 0 2021-04-01 11:55 /config drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 2021-04-01 11:54 /config/a --w--w--w- 1 root root 4096 2021-04-01 11:53 /config/a/1.txt ...... 2. Then run: for file in /config do echo $file grep -R 'key' $file done 3. __configfs_open_file will be called in parallel, the first one got called will do: if (file->f_mode & FMODE_READ) { if (!(inode->i_mode & S_IRUGO)) goto out_put_module; config_item_put(buffer->item); kref_put() package_details_release() kfree() the other one will run into use-after-free issues like this: BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in __configfs_open_file+0x1bc/0x3b0 Read of size 8 at addr fffffff155f02480 by task grep/13096 CPU: 0 PID: 13096 Comm: grep VIP: 00 Tainted: G W 4.14.116-kasan #1 TGID: 13096 Comm: grep Call trace: dump_stack+0x118/0x160 kasan_report+0x22c/0x294 __asan_load8+0x80/0x88 __configfs_open_file+0x1bc/0x3b0 configfs_open_file+0x28/0x34 do_dentry_open+0x2cc/0x5c0 vfs_open+0x80/0xe0 path_openat+0xd8c/0x2988 do_filp_open+0x1c4/0x2fc do_sys_open+0x23c/0x404 SyS_openat+0x38/0x48 Allocated by task 2138: kasan_kmalloc+0xe0/0x1ac kmem_cache_alloc_trace+0x334/0x394 packages_make_item+0x4c/0x180 configfs_mkdir+0x358/0x740 vfs_mkdir2+0x1bc/0x2e8 SyS_mkdirat+0x154/0x23c el0_svc_naked+0x34/0x38 Freed by task 13096: kasan_slab_free+0xb8/0x194 kfree+0x13c/0x910 package_details_release+0x524/0x56c kref_put+0xc4/0x104 config_item_put+0x24/0x34 __configfs_open_file+0x35c/0x3b0 configfs_open_file+0x28/0x34 do_dentry_open+0x2cc/0x5c0 vfs_open+0x80/0xe0 path_openat+0xd8c/0x2988 do_filp_open+0x1c4/0x2fc do_sys_open+0x23c/0x404 SyS_openat+0x38/0x48 el0_svc_naked+0x34/0x38 To fix this issue, remove the config_item_put in __configfs_open_file to balance the refcount of config_item. 2021-01-24fs: make helpers idmap mount awareChristian Brauner4-6/+11
Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. 2021-01-24namei: make permission helpers idmapped mount awareChristian Brauner1-1/+2
The two helpers inode_permission() and generic_permission() are used by the vfs to perform basic permission checking by verifying that the caller is privileged over an inode. In order to handle idmapped mounts we extend the two helpers with an additional user namespace argument. On idmapped mounts the two helpers will make sure to map the inode according to the mount's user namespace and then peform identical permission checks to inode_permission() and generic_permission(). If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. 2020-04-27configfs: fix config_item refcnt leak in configfs_rmdir()Xiyu Yang1-0/+1
configfs_rmdir() invokes configfs_get_config_item(), which returns a reference of the specified config_item object to "parent_item" with increased refcnt. When configfs_rmdir() returns, local variable "parent_item" becomes invalid, so the refcount should be decreased to keep refcount balanced. The reference counting issue happens in one exception handling path of configfs_rmdir(). When down_write_killable() fails, the function forgets to decrease the refcnt increased by configfs_get_config_item(), causing a refcnt leak. Fix this issue by calling config_item_put() when down_write_killable() fails. AV: get rid of clamping in ->setattr() instances; we don't need to bother with that there, with notify_change() doing normalization in all cases now (it already did for implicit case, since current_time() clamps). 2019-09-11configfs: fix a deadlock in configfs_symlink()Al Viro1-1/+32
Configfs abuses symlink(2). Unlike the normal filesystems, it wants the target resolved at symlink(2) time, like link(2) would've done. The problem is that ->symlink() is called with the parent directory locked exclusive, so resolving the target inside the ->symlink() is easily deadlocked. Short of really ugly games in sys_symlink() itself, all we can do is to unlock the parent before resolving the target and relock it after. However, that invalidates the checks done by the caller of ->symlink(), so we have to * check that dentry is still where it used to be (it couldn't have been moved, but it could've been unhashed) * recheck that it's still negative (somebody else might've successfully created a symlink with the same name while we were looking the target up) * recheck the permissions on the parent directory. 2019-09-04configfs: provide exclusion between IO and removalsAl Viro2-18/+80
Make sure that attribute methods are not called after the item has been removed from the tree. To do so, we * at the point of no return in removals, grab ->frag_sem exclusive and mark the fragment dead. * call the methods of attributes with ->frag_sem taken shared and only after having verified that the fragment is still alive. The main benefit is for method instances - they are guaranteed that the objects they are accessing *and* all ancestors are still there. Another win is that we don't need to bother with extra refcount on config_item when opening a file - the item will be alive for as long as it stays in the tree, and we won't touch it/attributes/any associated data after it's been removed from the tree. revert cc57c07343bd "configfs: fix registered group removal" It was an attempt to handle something that fundamentally doesn't work - configfs_register_group() should never be done in a part of tree that can be rmdir'ed. 2019-05-28configfs: Fix use-after-free when accessing sd->s_dentrySahitya Tummala1-8/+6
In the vfs_statx() context, during path lookup, the dentry gets added to sd->s_dentry via configfs_attach_attr(). In the end, vfs_statx() kills the dentry by calling path_put(), which invokes configfs_d_iput(). Ideally, this dentry must be removed from sd->s_dentry but it doesn't if the sd->s_count >= 3. As a result, sd->s_dentry is holding reference to a stale dentry pointer whose memory is already freed up. This results in use-after-free issue, when this stale sd->s_dentry is accessed later in configfs_readdir() path. This issue can be easily reproduced, by running the LTP test case - sh fs_racer_file_list.sh /config (https://github.com/linux-test-project/ltp/blob/master/testcases/kernel/fs/racer/fs_racer_file_list.sh) Fixes: 76ae281f6307 ('configfs: fix race between dentry put and lookup') Signed-off-by: Sahitya Tummala <stummala@codeaurora.org> Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de>

2018-07-17configfs: fix registered group removalMike Christie1-0/+11
This patch fixes a bug where configfs_register_group had added a group in a tree, and userspace has done a rmdir on a dir somewhere above that group and we hit a kernel crash. The problem is configfs_rmdir will detach everything under it and unlink groups on the default_groups list. It will not unlink groups added with configfs_register_group so when configfs_unregister_group is called to drop its references to the group/items we crash when we try to access the freed dentrys. The patch just adds a check for if a rmdir has been done above us and if so just does the unlink part of unregistration. Sorry if you are getting this multiple times. I thouhgt I sent this to some of you and lkml, but I do not see it. 2018-06-06vfs: change inode times to use struct timespec64Deepa Dinamani1-6/+6
struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Transition vfs to use y2038 safe struct timespec64 instead. The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle script. This catches about 80% of the changes. All the header file and logic changes are included in the first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions. I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple for review. The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases. 2017-10-19configfs: make ci_type field, some pointers and function arguments constBhumika Goyal3-10/+10
The ci_type field of the config_item structure do not modify the fields of the config_item_type structure it points to. And the other pointers initialized with ci_type do not modify the fields as well. So, make the ci_type field and the pointers initialized with ci_type as const. Make the struct config_item_type *type function argument of functions config_{item/group}_init_type_name const as the argument in both the functions is only stored in the ci_type field of a config_item structure which is now made const. Make the argument of configfs_register_default_group const as it is only passed to the argument of the function config_group_init_type_name which is now const. 2017-06-12configfs: Fix race between create_link and configfs_rmdirNicholas Bellinger1-2/+1
This patch closes a long standing race in configfs between the creation of a new symlink in create_link(), while the symlink target's config_item is being concurrently removed via configfs_rmdir(). This can happen because the symlink target's reference is obtained by config_item_get() in create_link() before the CONFIGFS_USET_DROPPING bit set by configfs_detach_prep() during configfs_rmdir() shutdown is actually checked.. This originally manifested itself on ppc64 on v4.8.y under heavy load using ibmvscsi target ports with Novalink API: [ 7877.289863] rpadlpar_io: slot U8247.22L.212A91A-V1-C8 added [ 7879.893760] ------------[ cut here ]------------ [ 7879.893768] WARNING: CPU: 15 PID: 17585 at ./include/linux/kref.h:46 config_item_get+0x7c/0x90 [configfs] [ 7879.893811] CPU: 15 PID: 17585 Comm: targetcli Tainted: G O 4.8.17-customv2.22 #12 [ 7879.893812] task: c00000018a0d3400 task.stack: c0000001f3b40000 [ 7879.893813] NIP: d000000002c664ec LR: d000000002c60980 CTR: c000000000b70870 [ 7879.893814] REGS: c0000001f3b43810 TRAP: 0700 Tainted: G O (4.8.17-customv2.22) [ 7879.893815] MSR: 8000000000029033 <SF,EE,ME,IR,DR,RI,LE> CR: 28222242 XER: 00000000 [ 7879.893820] CFAR: d000000002c664bc SOFTE: 1 GPR00: d000000002c60980 c0000001f3b43a90 d000000002c70908 c0000000fbc06820 GPR04: c0000001ef1bd900 0000000000000004 0000000000000001 0000000000000000 GPR08: 0000000000000000 0000000000000001 d000000002c69560 d000000002c66d80 GPR12: c000000000b70870 c00000000e798700 c0000001f3b43ca0 c0000001d4949d40 GPR16: c00000014637e1c0 0000000000000000 0000000000000000 c0000000f2392940 GPR20: c0000001f3b43b98 0000000000000041 0000000000600000 0000000000000000 GPR24: fffffffffffff000 0000000000000000 d000000002c60be0 c0000001f1dac490 GPR28: 0000000000000004 0000000000000000 c0000001ef1bd900 c0000000f2392940 [ 7879.893839] NIP [d000000002c664ec] config_item_get+0x7c/0x90 [configfs] [ 7879.893841] LR [d000000002c60980] check_perm+0x80/0x2e0 [configfs] [ 7879.893842] Call Trace: [ 7879.893844] [c0000001f3b43ac0] [d000000002c60980] check_perm+0x80/0x2e0 [configfs] [ 7879.893847] [c0000001f3b43b10] [c000000000329770] do_dentry_open+0x2c0/0x460 [ 7879.893849] [c0000001f3b43b70] [c000000000344480] path_openat+0x210/0x1490 [ 7879.893851] [c0000001f3b43c80] [c00000000034708c] do_filp_open+0xfc/0x170 [ 7879.893853] [c0000001f3b43db0] [c00000000032b5bc] do_sys_open+0x1cc/0x390 [ 7879.893856] [c0000001f3b43e30] [c000000000009584] system_call+0x38/0xec [ 7879.893856] Instruction dump: [ 7879.893858] 409d0014 38210030 e8010010 7c0803a6 4e800020 3d220000 e94981e0 892a0000 [ 7879.893861] 2f890000 409effe0 39200001 992a0000 <0fe00000> 4bffffd0 60000000 60000000 [ 7879.893866] ---[ end trace 14078f0b3b5ad0aa ]--- To close this race, go ahead and obtain the symlink's target config_item reference only after the existing CONFIGFS_USET_DROPPING check succeeds. 2016-09-28fs: Replace current_fs_time() with current_time()Deepa Dinamani1-3/+3
current_fs_time() uses struct super_block* as an argument. As per Linus's suggestion, this is changed to take struct inode* as a parameter instead. This is because the function is primarily meant for vfs inode timestamps. Also the function was renamed as per Arnd's suggestion. Change all calls to current_fs_time() to use the new current_time() function instead. current_fs_time() will be deleted. 2016-07-10configfs: don't set buffer_needs_fill to zero if show() returns errorTal Shorer1-3/+3
A confgifs attribute's show() callback is called once the first time the user attempts to read from it. If it returns an error, that error is returned to the user. However, the open file's buffer_needs_fill is still set to zero and consecutive read() calls will find an empty buffer that doesn't need filling and return 0 to the user. This could give the user the wrong impression that the attribute was read successfully. Fix this by not setting buffer_needs_fill if show() returns an error, making consecutive read() calls call show() again and either get an error again or get data. 2016-06-30configfs: Remove ppos increment in configfs_write_bin_fileMarek Vasut1-2/+0
The simple_write_to_buffer() already increments the @ppos on success, see fs/libfs.c simple_write_to_buffer() comment: " On success, the number of bytes written is returned and the offset @ppos advanced by this number, or negative value is returned on error. " If the configfs_write_bin_file() is invoked with @count smaller than the total length of the written binary file, it will be invoked multiple times. Since configfs_write_bin_file() increments @ppos on success, after calling simple_write_to_buffer(), the @ppos is incremented twice. Subsequent invocation of configfs_write_bin_file() will result in the next piece of data being written to the offset twice as long as the length of the previous write, thus creating buffer with "holes" in it. The simple testcase using DTO follows: $ mkdir /sys/kernel/config/device-tree/overlays/1 $ dd bs=1 if=foo.dtbo of=/sys/kernel/config/device-tree/overlays/1/dtbo Without this patch, the testcase will result in twice as big buffer in the kernel, which is then passed to the cfs_overlay_item_dtbo_write() .
