2011-03-02ext2: Fix link count corruption under heavy link+rename loadJosh Hunt1-7/+2
vfs_rename_other() does not lock renamed inode with i_mutex. Thus changing i_nlink in a non-atomic manner (which happens in ext2_rename()) can corrupt it as reported and analyzed by Josh. In fact, there is no good reason to mess with i_nlink of the moved file. We did it presumably to simulate linking into the new directory and unlinking from an old one. But the practical effect of this is disputable because fsck can possibly treat file as being properly linked into both directories without writing any error which is confusing. So we just stop increment-decrement games with i_nlink which also fixes the corruption. 2011-02-01fs/vfs/security: pass last path component to LSM on inode creationEric Paris5-11/+15
SELinux would like to implement a new labeling behavior of newly created inodes. We currently label new inodes based on the parent and the creating process. This new behavior would also take into account the name of the new object when deciding the new label. This is not the (supposed) full path, just the last component of the path. This is very useful because creating /etc/shadow is different than creating /etc/passwd but the kernel hooks are unable to differentiate these operations. We currently require that userspace realize it is doing some difficult operation like that and than userspace jumps through SELinux hoops to get things set up correctly. This patch does not implement new behavior, that is obviously contained in a seperate SELinux patch, but it does pass the needed name down to the correct LSM hook. If no such name exists it is fine to pass NULL. Signed-off-by: Eric Paris <eparis@redhat.com>

2011-01-10ext2: speed up file creates by optimizing rec_len functionsEric Sandeen1-5/+14
The addition of 64k block capability in the rec_len_from_disk and rec_len_to_disk functions added a bit of math overhead which slows down file create workloads needlessly when the architecture cannot even support 64k blocks, thanks to page size limits. The directory entry checking can also be optimized a bit by sprinkling in some unlikely() conditions to move the error handling out of line. bonnie++ sequential file creates on a 512MB ramdisk speeds up from about 2200/s to about 2500/s, about a 14% improvement. 2011-01-07ext2,3,4: provide simple rcu-walk ACL implementationNick Piggin1-2/+5

2011-01-07fs: icache RCU free inodesNick Piggin1-1/+8
RCU free the struct inode. This will allow: - Subsequent store-free path walking patch. The inode must be consulted for permissions when walking, so an RCU inode reference is a must. - sb_inode_list_lock to be moved inside i_lock because sb list walkers who want to take i_lock no longer need to take sb_inode_list_lock to walk the list in the first place. This will simplify and optimize locking. - Could remove some nested trylock loops in dcache code - Could potentially simplify things a bit in VM land. Do not need to take the page lock to follow page->mapping. The downsides of this is the performance cost of using RCU. In a simple creat/unlink microbenchmark, performance drops by about 10% due to inability to reuse cache-hot slab objects. As iterations increase and RCU freeing starts kicking over, this increases to about 20%. In cases where inode lifetimes are longer (ie. many inodes may be allocated during the average life span of a single inode), a lot of this cache reuse is not applicable, so the regression caused by this patch is smaller. The cache-hot regression could largely be avoided by using SLAB_DESTROY_BY_RCU, however this adds some complexity to list walking and store-free path walking, so I prefer to implement this at a later date, if it is shown to be a win in real situations. I haven't found a regression in any non-micro benchmark so I doubt it will be a problem. Signed-off-by: Nick Piggin <npiggin@kernel.dk>

2010-10-04BKL: Remove BKL from ext2 filesystemJan Blunck1-4/+0
The BKL is still used in ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super(), ext2_sync_fs() ext2_remount() and ext2_write_inode(). From these calls ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super() and ext2_remount() are protected against each other by the struct super_block s_umount rw semaphore. The call in ext2_write_inode() could only protect the modification of the ext2_sb_info through ext2_update_dynamic_rev() against concurrent ext2_sync_fs() or ext2_remount(). ext2_fill_super() and ext2_put_super() can be left out because you need a valid filesystem reference in all three cases, which you do not have when you are one of these functions. If the BKL is only protecting the modification of the ext2_sb_info it can safely be removed since this is protected by the struct ext2_sb_info s_lock. 2010-10-04BKL: Explicitly add BKL around get_sb/fill_superJan Blunck1-2/+8
This patch is a preparation necessary to remove the BKL from do_new_mount(). It explicitly adds calls to lock_kernel()/unlock_kernel() around get_sb/fill_super operations for filesystems that still uses the BKL. I've read through all the code formerly covered by the BKL inside do_kern_mount() and have satisfied myself that it doesn't need the BKL any more. do_kern_mount() is already called without the BKL when mounting the rootfs and in nfsctl. do_kern_mount() calls vfs_kern_mount(), which is called from various places without BKL: simple_pin_fs(), nfs_do_clone_mount() through nfs_follow_mountpoint(), afs_mntpt_do_automount() through afs_mntpt_follow_link(). Both later functions are actually the filesystems follow_link inode operation. vfs_kern_mount() is calling the specified get_sb function and lets the filesystem do its job by calling the given fill_super function. Therefore I think it is safe to push down the BKL from the VFS to the low-level filesystems get_sb/fill_super operation. [arnd: do not add the BKL to those file systems that already don't use it elsewhere] Signed-off-by: Jan Blunck <jblunck@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <matthew@wil.cx> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@infradead.org>

2010-08-10check ATTR_SIZE contraints in inode_change_okChristoph Hellwig1-10/+2
Make sure we check the truncate constraints early on in ->setattr by adding those checks to inode_change_ok. Also clean up and document inode_change_ok to make this obvious. As a fallout we don't have to call inode_newsize_ok from simple_setsize and simplify it down to a truncate_setsize which doesn't return an error. This simplifies a lot of setattr implementations and means we use truncate_setsize almost everywhere. Get rid of fat_setsize now that it's trivial and mark ext2_setsize static to make the calling convention obvious. Keep the inode_newsize_ok in vmtruncate for now as all callers need an audit for its removal anyway. Note: setattr code in ecryptfs doesn't call inode_change_ok at all and needs a deeper audit, but that is left for later. 2010-08-10introduce __block_write_beginChristoph Hellwig1-2/+1
Split up the block_write_begin implementation - __block_write_begin is a new trivial wrapper for block_prepare_write that always takes an already allocated page and can be either called from block_write_begin or filesystem code that already has a page allocated. Remove the handling of already allocated pages from block_write_begin after switching all callers that do it to __block_write_begin. 2010-08-10clean up write_begin usage for directories in pagecacheChristoph Hellwig3-24/+14
For filesystem that implement directories in pagecache we call block_write_begin with an already allocated page for this code, while the normal regular file write path uses the default block_write_begin behaviour. Get rid of the __foofs_write_begin helper and opencode the normal write_begin call in foofs_write_begin, while adding a new foofs_prepare_chunk helper for the directory code. The added benefit is that foofs_prepare_chunk has a much saner calling convention. Note that the interruptible flag passed into block_write_begin is always ignored if we already pass in a page (see next patch for details), and we never were doing truncations of exessive blocks for this case either so we can switch directly to block_write_begin_newtrunc. 2010-06-05fix truncate inode time modification breakageNick Piggin1-1/+1
mtime and ctime should be changed only if the file size has actually changed. Patches changing ext2 and tmpfs from vmtruncate to new truncate sequence has caused regressions where they always update timestamps. There is some strange cases in POSIX where truncate(2) must not update times unless the size has acutally changed, see 6e656be89. This area is all still rather buggy in different ways in a lot of filesystems and needs a cleanup and audit (ideally the vfs will provide a simple attribute or call to direct all filesystems exactly which attributes to change). But coming up with the best solution will take a while and is not appropriate for rc anyway. So fix recent regression for now. 2010-05-28rename the generic fsync implementationsChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
We don't name our generic fsync implementations very well currently. The no-op implementation for in-memory filesystems currently is called simple_sync_file which doesn't make too much sense to start with, the the generic one for simple filesystems is called simple_fsync which can lead to some confusion. This patch renames the generic file fsync method to generic_file_fsync to match the other generic_file_* routines it is supposed to be used with, and the no-op implementation to noop_fsync to make it obvious what to expect. 2010-05-24quota: explicitly set ->dq_op and ->s_qcopChristoph Hellwig1-0/+6
Only set the quota operation vectors if the filesystem actually supports quota instead of doing it for all filesystems in alloc_super(). [Jan Kara: Export dquot_operations and vfs_quotactl_ops] Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
2010-05-24quota: move unmount handling into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig1-0/+2
Currently the VFS calls into the quotactl interface for unmounting filesystems. This means filesystems with their own quota handling can't easily distinguish between user-space originating quotaoff and an unount. Instead move the responsibily of the unmount handling into the filesystem to be consistent with all other dquot handling. Note that we do call dquot_disable a lot later now, e.g. after a sync_filesystem. But this is fine as the quota code does all its writes via blockdev's mapping and that is synced even later.
