struct timespec is not y2038 safe. Transition vfs to use y2038 safe struct timespec64 instead. The change was made with the help of the following cocinelle script. This catches about 80% of the changes. All the header file and logic changes are included in the first 5 rules. The rest are trivial substitutions. I avoid changing any of the function signatures or any other filesystem specific data structures to keep the patch simple for review. The script can be a little shorter by combining different cases. This is a pure automated search-and-replace of the internal kernel superblock flags. The s_flags are now called SB_*, with the names and the values for the moment mirroring the MS_* flags that they're equivalent to. Note how the MS_xyz flags are the ones passed to the mount system call, while the SB_xyz flags are what we then use in sb->s_flags. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman6-0/+6
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-08-01fs: convert a pile of fsync routines to errseq_t based reportingJeff Layton1-1/+1
This patch converts most of the in-kernel filesystems that do writeback out of the pagecache to report errors using the errseq_t-based infrastructure that was recently added. This allows them to report errors once for each open file description. Most filesystems have a fairly straightforward fsync operation. They call filemap_write_and_wait_range to write back all of the data and wait on it, and then (sometimes) sync out the metadata. For those filesystems this is a straightforward conversion from calling filemap_write_and_wait_range in their fsync operation to calling file_write_and_wait_range. Between these two commits, commit d9414774dc0c ("cifs: Convert cifs to new aops.") added a check in cifs_write_begin(), but that check was soon removed by commit a98ee8c1c707 ("[CIFS] fix regression in cifs_write_begin/cifs_write_end"). We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. smack ->d_instantiate() uses ->setxattr(), so to be able to call it before we'd hashed the new dentry and attached it to inode, we need ->setxattr() instances getting the inode as an explicit argument rather than obtaining it from dentry. Unlike ->getxattr() (which is used by both selinux and smack instances of ->d_instantiate()) ->setxattr() is used only by smack one and unfortunately it got missed back then. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. Pages looked up by __hfs_bnode_create() (called by hfs_bnode_create() and hfs_bnode_find() for finding or creating pages corresponding to an inode) are immediately kmap()'ed and used (both read and write) and kunmap()'ed, and should not be page_cache_release()'ed until hfs_bnode_free(). This patch fixes a problem I first saw in July 2012: merely running "du" on a large hfsplus-mounted directory a few times on a reasonably loaded system would get the hfsplus driver all confused and complaining about B-tree inconsistencies, and generates a "BUG: Bad page state". Most recently, I can generate this problem on up-to-date Fedora 22 with shipped kernel 4.0.5, by running "du /" (="/" + "/home" + "/mnt" + other smaller mounts) and "du /mnt" simultaneously on two windows, where /mnt is a lightly-used QEMU VM image of the full Mac OS X 10.9: $ df -i / /home /mnt Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/mapper/fedora-root 3276800 551665 2725135 17% / /dev/mapper/fedora-home 52879360 716221 52163139 2% /home /dev/nbd0p2 4294967295 1387818 4293579477 1% /mnt After applying the patch, I was able to run "du /" (60+ times) and "du /mnt" (150+ times) continuously and simultaneously for 6+ hours. There are many reports of the hfsplus driver getting confused under load and generating "BUG: Bad page state" or other similar issues over the years. [1] The unpatched code [2] has always been wrong since it entered the kernel tree. The only reason why it gets away with it is that the kmap/memcpy/kunmap follow very quickly after the page_cache_release() so the kernel has not had a chance to reuse the memory for something else, most of the time. The current RW driver appears to have followed the design and development of the earlier read-only hfsplus driver [3], where-by version 0.1 (Dec 2001) had a B-tree node-centric approach to read_cache_page()/page_cache_release() per bnode_get()/bnode_put(), migrating towards version 0.2 (June 2002) of caching and releasing pages per inode extents. When the current RW code first entered the kernel [2] in 2005, there was an REF_PAGES conditional (and "//" commented out code) to switch between B-node centric paging to inode-centric paging. There was a mistake with the direction of one of the REF_PAGES conditionals in __hfs_bnode_create(). In a subsequent "remove debug code" commit [4], the read_cache_page()/page_cache_release() per bnode_get()/bnode_put() were removed, but a page_cache_release() was mistakenly left in (propagating the "REF_PAGES <-> !REF_PAGE" mistake), and the commented-out page_cache_release() in bnode_release() (which should be spanned by !REF_PAGES) was never enabled. 2015-09-05fs: create and use seq_show_option for escapingKees Cook1-2/+2
Many file systems that implement the show_options hook fail to correctly escape their output which could lead to unescaped characters (e.g. new lines) leaking into /proc/mounts and /proc/[pid]/mountinfo files. This could lead to confusion, spoofed entries (resulting in things like systemd issuing false d-bus "mount" notifications), and who knows what else. This looks like it would only be the root user stepping on themselves, but it's possible weird things could happen in containers or in other situations with delegated mount privileges. Here's an example using overlay with setuid fusermount trusting the contents of /proc/mounts (via the /etc/mtab symlink). With the planned cgroup writeback support, backing-dev related declarations will be more widely used across block and cgroup; unfortunately, including backing-dev.h from include/linux/blkdev.h makes cyclic include dependency quite likely. This patch separates out backing-dev-defs.h which only has the essential definitions and updates blkdev.h to include it. c files which need access to more backing-dev details now include backing-dev.h directly. This takes backing-dev.h off the common include dependency chain making it a lot easier to use it across block and cgroup. v2: fs/fat build failure fixed.
