2024-09-02nilfs2: do not propagate ENOENT error from sufile during recoveryRyusuke Konishi1-1/+10
nilfs_sufile_free() returns the error code -ENOENT when the block where the segment usage should be placed does not exist (hole block case), but this error should not be propagated upwards to the mount system call. In nilfs_prepare_segment_for_recovery(), one of the recovery steps during mount, nilfs_sufile_free() is used and may return -ENOENT as is, so in that case return -EINVAL instead. 2024-09-02nilfs2: fix missing cleanup on rollforward recovery errorRyusuke Konishi1-2/+33
In an error injection test of a routine for mount-time recovery, KASAN found a use-after-free bug. It turned out that if data recovery was performed using partial logs created by dsync writes, but an error occurred before starting the log writer to create a recovered checkpoint, the inodes whose data had been recovered were left in the ns_dirty_files list of the nilfs object and were not freed. Fix this issue by cleaning up inodes that have read the recovery data if the recovery routine fails midway before the log writer starts. 2024-05-20nilfs2: make block erasure safe in nilfs_finish_roll_forward()Ryusuke Konishi1-0/+4
The implementation of writing a zero-fill block in nilfs_finish_roll_forward() is not safe. The buffer is being cleared without acquiring a lock or setting the uptodate flag, so theoretically, between the time the buffer's data is cleared and the time it is written back to the block device using sync_dirty_buffer(), that zero data can be undone by concurrent block device reads. Since this buffer points to a location that has been read from disk once, the uptodate flag will most likely remain, but since it was obtained with __getblk(), that is not guaranteed. In other words, this is exceptional, and this function itself is not normally called (only once when mounting after a specific pattern of unclean shutdown), so it is highly unlikely that this will actually cause a problem. Anyway, eliminate this potential race issue by protecting the clearing of buffer data with a buffer lock and setting the buffer's uptodate flag within the protected section. 2024-05-12nilfs2: convert BUG_ON() in nilfs_finish_roll_forward() to WARN_ON()Ryusuke Konishi1-1/+3
The BUG_ON check performed on the return value of __getblk() in nilfs_finish_roll_forward() assumes that a buffer that has been successfully read once is retrieved with the same parameters and does not fail (__getblk() does not return an error due to memory allocation failure). Also, nilfs_finish_roll_forward() is called at most once during mount. Taking these into consideration, rewrite the check to use WARN_ON() to avoid using BUG_ON(). 2024-02-23nilfs2: convert recovery logic to use kmap_localRyusuke Konishi1-2/+2
Patch series "nilfs2: eliminate kmap and kmap_atomic calls". This series converts remaining kmap and kmap_atomic calls to use kmap_local, mainly in metadata files, and eliminates calls to these deprecated kmap functions from nilfs2. This series does not include converting metadata files to use folios, but it is a step in that direction. Most conversions are straightforward, but some are not: the checkpoint file, the inode file, and the persistent object allocator. These have been adjusted or rewritten to avoid multiple kmap_local calls or nest them if necessary, and to eliminate long waits like block I/O within the highmem mapping sections. This series has been tested in both 32-bit and 64-bit environments with varying block sizes. 2024-02-08nilfs2: fix data corruption in dsync block recovery for small block sizesRyusuke Konishi1-3/+4
The helper function nilfs_recovery_copy_block() of nilfs_recovery_dsync_blocks(), which recovers data from logs created by data sync writes during a mount after an unclean shutdown, incorrectly calculates the on-page offset when copying repair data to the file's page cache. In environments where the block size is smaller than the page size, this flaw can cause data corruption and leak uninitialized memory bytes during the recovery process. Fix these issues by correcting this byte offset calculation on the page. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov1-2/+2
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Nilfs object holds a back pointer to a writable super block instance in nilfs->ns_writer, and this became eliminable since sb is now made per device and all inodes have a valid pointer to it. implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. This is a trivial patch to remove unnecessary condition. load_segment_summary() checks crc of segment_summary OR crc of whole log data blocks based on boolean argument full_check. However, callers of the function pass only 1 as full_check, which means only whole log data blocks checking code is running all the time. This patch deletes the condition and full_check argument and also deletes enum 'NILFS_SEG_FAIL_CHECKSUM_SEGSUM' and corresponding case clause, for it is nolonger used anymore. On-disk counters ndirtysegs and ncleansegs of sufile, can go wrong after roll-forward recovery because nilfs_prepare_segment_for_recovery() function marks segments dirty without adjusting value of these counters. This fixes the problem by adding a function to sufile which does the operation adjusting the counters, and by letting the recovery function use it.
