git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux Pull sysctl updates from Luis Chamberlain: "To help make the move of sysctls out of kernel/sysctl.c not incur a size penalty sysctl has been changed to allow us to not require the sentinel, the final empty element on the sysctl array. Joel Granados has been doing all this work. In the v6.6 kernel we got the major infrastructure changes required to support this. For v6.7 we had all arch/ and drivers/ modified to remove the sentinel. For v6.8-rc1 we get a few more updates for fs/ directory only. The kernel/ directory is left but we'll save that for v6.9-rc1 as those patches are still being reviewed. After that we then can expect also the removal of the no longer needed check for procname == NULL. Let us recap the purpose of this work: - this helps reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory consumed by the kernel by about ~64 bytes per array - the extra 64-byte penalty is no longer inncurred now when we move sysctls out from kernel/sysctl.c to their own files Thomas Weißschuh also sent a few cleanups, for v6.9-rc1 we expect to see further work by Thomas Weißschuh with the constificatin of the struct ctl_table. Due to Joel Granados's work, and to help bring in new blood, I have suggested for him to become a maintainer and he's accepted. So for v6.9-rc1 I look forward to seeing him sent you a pull request for further sysctl changes. This also removes Iurii Zaikin as a maintainer as he has moved on to other projects and has had no time to help at all" * tag 'sysctl-6.8-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux: sysctl: remove struct ctl_path sysctl: delete unused define SYSCTL_PERM_EMPTY_DIR coda: Remove the now superfluous sentinel elements from ctl_table array sysctl: Remove the now superfluous sentinel elements from ctl_table array fs: Remove the now superfluous sentinel elements from ctl_table array cachefiles: Remove the now superfluous sentinel element from ctl_table array sysclt: Clarify the results of selftest run sysctl: Add a selftest for handling empty dirs sysctl: Fix out of bounds access for empty sysctl registers MAINTAINERS: Add Joel Granados as co-maintainer for proc sysctl MAINTAINERS: remove Iurii Zaikin from proc sysctl

2023-12-29fs: convert block_write_full_page to block_write_full_folioMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)1-2/+2
Convert the function to be compatible with writepage_t so that it can be passed to write_cache_pages() by blkdev. This removes a call to compound_head(). We can also remove the function export as both callers are built-in. 2023-12-28fs: Remove the now superfluous sentinel elements from ctl_table arrayJoel Granados1-1/+0
This commit comes at the tail end of a greater effort to remove the empty elements at the end of the ctl_table arrays (sentinels) which will reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory bloat by ~64 bytes per sentinel (further information Link : https://lore.kernel.org/all/ZO5Yx5JFogGi%2FcBo@bombadil.infradead.org/) Remove sentinel elements ctl_table struct. Special attention was placed in making sure that an empty directory for fs/verity was created when CONFIG_FS_VERITY_BUILTIN_SIGNATURES is not defined. In this case we use the register sysctl call that expects a size. Signed-off-by: Joel Granados <j.granados@samsung.com> Reviewed-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz> Reviewed-by: "Darrick J. 2023-11-21fs: Rename mapping private membersMatthew Wilcox (Oracle)1-5/+5
It is hard to find where mapping->private_lock, mapping->private_list and mapping->private_data are used, due to private_XXX being a relatively common name for variables and structure members in the kernel. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull vfs fanotify fsid updates from Christian Brauner: "This work is part of the plan to enable fanotify to serve as a drop-in replacement for inotify. While inotify is availabe on all filesystems, fanotify currently isn't. In order to support fanotify on all filesystems two things are needed: (1) all filesystems need to support AT_HANDLE_FID (2) all filesystems need to report a non-zero f_fsid This contains (1) and allows filesystems to encode non-decodable file handlers for fanotify without implementing any exportfs operations by encoding a file id of type FILEID_INO64_GEN from i_ino and i_generation. Filesystems that want to opt out of encoding non-decodable file ids for fanotify that don't support NFS export can do so by providing an empty export_operations struct. This also partially addresses (2) by generating f_fsid for simple filesystems as well as freevxfs. Remaining filesystems will be dealt with by separate patches. Finally, this contains the patch from the current exportfs maintainers which moves exportfs under vfs with Chuck, Jeff, and Amir as maintainers and vfs.git as tree" * tag 'vfs-6.7.fsid' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: MAINTAINERS: create an entry for exportfs fs: fix build error with CONFIG_EXPORTFS=m or not defined freevxfs: derive f_fsid from bdev->bd_dev fs: report f_fsid from s_dev for "simple" filesystems exportfs: support encoding non-decodeable file handles by default exportfs: define FILEID_INO64_GEN* file handle types exportfs: make ->encode_fh() a mandatory method for NFS export exportfs: add helpers to check if filesystem can encode/decode file handles

2023-10-28exportfs: make ->encode_fh() a mandatory method for NFS exportAmir Goldstein1-0/+1
Rename the default helper for encoding FILEID_INO32_GEN* file handles to generic_encode_ino32_fh() and convert the filesystems that used the default implementation to use the generic helper explicitly. After this change, exportfs_encode_inode_fh() no longer has a default implementation to encode FILEID_INO32_GEN* file handles. 2023-08-28Merge tag 'v6.6-vfs.ctime' of ↵Linus Torvalds2-9/+9
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull vfs timestamp updates from Christian Brauner: "This adds VFS support for multi-grain timestamps and converts tmpfs, xfs, ext4, and btrfs to use them. This carries acks from all relevant filesystems. The VFS always uses coarse-grained timestamps when updating the ctime and mtime after a change. This has the benefit of allowing filesystems to optimize away a lot of metadata updates, down to around 1 per jiffy, even when a file is under heavy writes. Unfortunately, this has always been an issue when we're exporting via NFSv3, which relies on timestamps to validate caches. A lot of changes can happen in a jiffy, so timestamps aren't sufficient to help the client decide to invalidate the cache. Even with NFSv4, a lot of exported filesystems don't properly support a change attribute and are subject to the same problems with timestamp granularity. Other applications have similar issues with timestamps (e.g., backup applications). If we were to always use fine-grained timestamps, that would improve the situation, but that becomes rather expensive, as the underlying filesystem would have to log a lot more metadata updates. This introduces fine-grained timestamps that are used when they are actively queried. This uses the 31st bit of the ctime tv_nsec field to indicate that something has queried the inode for the mtime or ctime. When this flag is set, on the next mtime or ctime update, the kernel will fetch a fine-grained timestamp instead of the usual coarse-grained one. As POSIX generally mandates that when the mtime changes, the ctime must also change the kernel always stores normalized ctime values, so only the first 30 bits of the tv_nsec field are ever used. Filesytems can opt into this behavior by setting the FS_MGTIME flag in the fstype. Filesystems that don't set this flag will continue to use coarse-grained timestamps. Various preparatory changes, fixes and cleanups are included: - Fixup all relevant places where POSIX requires updating ctime together with mtime. This is a wide-range of places and all maintainers provided necessary Acks. - Add new accessors for inode->i_ctime directly and change all callers to rely on them. Plain accesses to inode->i_ctime are now gone and it is accordingly rename to inode->__i_ctime and commented as requiring accessors. - Extend generic_fillattr() to pass in a request mask mirroring in a sense the statx() uapi. This allows callers to pass in a request mask to only get a subset of attributes filled in. - Rework timestamp updates so it's possible to drop the @now parameter the update_time() inode operation and associated helpers. - Add inode_update_timestamps() and convert all filesystems to it removing a bunch of open-coding" * tag 'v6.6-vfs.ctime' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: (107 commits) btrfs: convert to multigrain timestamps ext4: switch to multigrain timestamps xfs: switch to multigrain timestamps tmpfs: add support for multigrain timestamps fs: add infrastructure for multigrain timestamps fs: drop the timespec64 argument from update_time xfs: have xfs_vn_update_time gets its own timestamp fat: make fat_update_time get its own timestamp fat: remove i_version handling from fat_update_time ubifs: have ubifs_update_time use inode_update_timestamps btrfs: have it use inode_update_timestamps fs: drop the timespec64 arg from generic_update_time fs: pass the request_mask to generic_fillattr fs: remove silly warning from current_time gfs2: fix timestamp handling on quota inodes fs: rename i_ctime field to __i_ctime selinux: convert to ctime accessor functions security: convert to ctime accessor functions apparmor: convert to ctime accessor functions sunrpc: convert to ctime accessor functions ...
2023-08-06vfs: get rid of old '->iterate' directory operationLinus Torvalds1-1/+2
All users now just use '->iterate_shared()', which only takes the directory inode lock for reading. Filesystems that never got convered to shared mode now instead use a wrapper that drops the lock, re-takes it in write mode, calls the old function, and then downgrades the lock back to read mode. This way the VFS layer and other callers no longer need to care about filesystems that never got converted to the modern era. The filesystems that use the new wrapper are ceph, coda, exfat, jfs, ntfs, ocfs2, overlayfs, and vboxsf. Honestly, several of them look like they really could just iterate their directories in shared mode and skip the wrapper entirely, but the point of this change is to not change semantics or fix filesystems that haven't been fixed in the last 7+ years, but to finally get rid of the dual iterators. Add a new config option that controls building the buffer_head code, and select it from all file systems and stacking drivers that need it. For the block device nodes and alternative iomap based buffered I/O path is provided when buffer_head support is not enabled, and iomap needs a a small tweak to define the IOMAP_F_BUFFER_HEAD flag to 0 to not call into the buffer_head code when it doesn't exist. Pull splice updates from Jens Axboe: "This kills off ITER_PIPE to avoid a race between truncate, iov_iter_revert() on the pipe and an as-yet incomplete DMA to a bio with unpinned/unref'ed pages from an O_DIRECT splice read. This causes memory corruption. Instead, we either use (a) filemap_splice_read(), which invokes the buffered file reading code and splices from the pagecache into the pipe; (b) copy_splice_read(), which bulk-allocates a buffer, reads into it and then pushes the filled pages into the pipe; or (c) handle it in filesystem-specific code. Summary: - Rename direct_splice_read() to copy_splice_read() - Simplify the calculations for the number of pages to be reclaimed in copy_splice_read() - Turn do_splice_to() into a helper, vfs_splice_read(), so that it can be used by overlayfs and coda to perform the checks on the lower fs - Make vfs_splice_read() jump to copy_splice_read() to handle direct-I/O and DAX - Provide shmem with its own splice_read to handle non-existent pages in the pagecache. We don't want a ->read_folio() as we don't want to populate holes, but filemap_get_pages() requires it - Provide overlayfs with its own splice_read to call down to a lower layer as overlayfs doesn't provide ->read_folio() - Provide coda with its own splice_read to call down to a lower layer as coda doesn't provide ->read_folio() - Direct ->splice_read to copy_splice_read() in tty, procfs, kernfs and random files as they just copy to the output buffer and don't splice pages - Provide wrappers for afs, ceph, ecryptfs, ext4, f2fs, nfs, ntfs3, ocfs2, orangefs, xfs and zonefs to do locking and/or revalidation - Make cifs use filemap_splice_read() - Replace pointers to generic_file_splice_read() with pointers to filemap_splice_read() as DIO and DAX are handled in the caller; filesystems can still provide their own alternate ->splice_read() op - Remove generic_file_splice_read() - Remove ITER_PIPE and its paraphernalia as generic_file_splice_read was the only user" * tag 'for-6.5/splice-2023-06-23' of git://git.kernel.dk/linux: (31 commits) splice: kdoc for filemap_splice_read() and copy_splice_read() iov_iter: Kill ITER_PIPE splice: Remove generic_file_splice_read() splice: Use filemap_splice_read() instead of generic_file_splice_read() cifs: Use filemap_splice_read() trace: Convert trace/seq to use copy_splice_read() zonefs: Provide a splice-read wrapper xfs: Provide a splice-read wrapper orangefs: Provide a splice-read wrapper ocfs2: Provide a splice-read wrapper ntfs3: Provide a splice-read wrapper nfs: Provide a splice-read wrapper f2fs: Provide a splice-read wrapper ext4: Provide a splice-read wrapper ecryptfs: Provide a splice-read wrapper ceph: Provide a splice-read wrapper afs: Provide a splice-read wrapper 9p: Add splice_read wrapper net: Make sock_splice_read() use copy_splice_read() by default tty, proc, kernfs, random: Use copy_splice_read() ...

2023-01-19fs: port ->setattr() to pass mnt_idmapChristian Brauner2-4/+4
Convert to struct mnt_idmap. Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap. Because the ATTR_RECORDs are next to each other, kernel can get the next ATTR_RECORD from end address of current ATTR_RECORD, through current ATTR_RECORD length field. The problem is that during iteration, when kernel calculates the end address of current ATTR_RECORD, kernel may trigger an integer overflow bug in executing `a = (ATTR_RECORD*)((u8*)a + le32_to_cpu(a->length))`. This may wrap, leading to a forever iteration on 32bit systems. This patch solves it by adding some checks on calculating end address of current ATTR_RECORD during iteration. 2022-09-12ntfs: fix out-of-bounds read in ntfs_attr_find()Hawkins Jiawei1-4/+16
Kernel iterates over ATTR_RECORDs in mft record in ntfs_attr_find(). To ensure access on these ATTR_RECORDs are within bounds, kernel will do some checking during iteration. The problem is that during checking whether ATTR_RECORD's name is within bounds, kernel will dereferences the ATTR_RECORD name_offset field, before checking this ATTR_RECORD strcture is within bounds. This problem may result out-of-bounds read in ntfs_attr_find(), reported by Syzkaller: ================================================================== BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in ntfs_attr_find+0xc02/0xce0 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:597 Read of size 2 at addr ffff88807e352009 by task syz-executor153/3607 [...] Call Trace: <TASK> __dump_stack lib/dump_stack.c:88 [inline] dump_stack_lvl+0xcd/0x134 lib/dump_stack.c:106 print_address_description mm/kasan/report.c:317 [inline] print_report.cold+0x2ba/0x719 mm/kasan/report.c:433 kasan_report+0xb1/0x1e0 mm/kasan/report.c:495 ntfs_attr_find+0xc02/0xce0 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:597 ntfs_attr_lookup+0x1056/0x2070 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:1193 ntfs_read_inode_mount+0x89a/0x2580 fs/ntfs/inode.c:1845 ntfs_fill_super+0x1799/0x9320 fs/ntfs/super.c:2854 mount_bdev+0x34d/0x410 fs/super.c:1400 legacy_get_tree+0x105/0x220 fs/fs_context.c:610 vfs_get_tree+0x89/0x2f0 fs/super.c:1530 do_new_mount fs/namespace.c:3040 [inline] path_mount+0x1326/0x1e20 fs/namespace.c:3370 do_mount fs/namespace.c:3383 [inline] __do_sys_mount fs/namespace.c:3591 [inline] __se_sys_mount fs/namespace.c:3568 [inline] __x64_sys_mount+0x27f/0x300 fs/namespace.c:3568 do_syscall_x64 arch/x86/entry/common.c:50 [inline] do_syscall_64+0x35/0xb0 arch/x86/entry/common.c:80 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x63/0xcd [...] </TASK> The buggy address belongs to the physical page: page:ffffea0001f8d400 refcount:1 mapcount:0 mapping:0000000000000000 index:0x0 pfn:0x7e350 head:ffffea0001f8d400 order:3 compound_mapcount:0 compound_pincount:0 flags: 0xfff00000010200(slab|head|node=0|zone=1|lastcpupid=0x7ff) raw: 00fff00000010200 0000000000000000 dead000000000122 ffff888011842140 raw: 0000000000000000 0000000000040004 00000001ffffffff 0000000000000000 page dumped because: kasan: bad access detected Memory state around the buggy address: ffff88807e351f00: fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc ffff88807e351f80: fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc >ffff88807e352000: fa fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ^ ffff88807e352080: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ffff88807e352100: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ================================================================== This patch solves it by moving the ATTR_RECORD strcture's bounds checking earlier, then checking whether ATTR_RECORD's name is within bounds. 2022-09-12ntfs: fix use-after-free in ntfs_attr_find()Hawkins Jiawei1-0/+7
Patch series "ntfs: fix bugs about Attribute", v2. This patchset fixes three bugs relative to Attribute in record: Patch 1 adds a sanity check to ensure that, attrs_offset field in first mft record loading from disk is within bounds. Patch 2 moves the ATTR_RECORD's bounds checking earlier, to avoid dereferencing ATTR_RECORD before checking this ATTR_RECORD is within bounds. Patch 3 adds an overflow checking to avoid possible forever loop in ntfs_attr_find(). Without patch 1 and patch 2, the kernel triggersa KASAN use-after-free detection as reported by Syzkaller. Although one of patch 1 or patch 2 can fix this, we still need both of them. Because patch 1 fixes the root cause, and patch 2 not only fixes the direct cause, but also fixes the potential out-of-bounds bug. This patch (of 3): Syzkaller reported use-after-free read as follows: ================================================================== BUG: KASAN: use-after-free in ntfs_attr_find+0xc02/0xce0 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:597 Read of size 2 at addr ffff88807e352009 by task syz-executor153/3607 [...] Call Trace: <TASK> __dump_stack lib/dump_stack.c:88 [inline] dump_stack_lvl+0xcd/0x134 lib/dump_stack.c:106 print_address_description mm/kasan/report.c:317 [inline] print_report.cold+0x2ba/0x719 mm/kasan/report.c:433 kasan_report+0xb1/0x1e0 mm/kasan/report.c:495 ntfs_attr_find+0xc02/0xce0 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:597 ntfs_attr_lookup+0x1056/0x2070 fs/ntfs/attrib.c:1193 ntfs_read_inode_mount+0x89a/0x2580 fs/ntfs/inode.c:1845 ntfs_fill_super+0x1799/0x9320 fs/ntfs/super.c:2854 mount_bdev+0x34d/0x410 fs/super.c:1400 legacy_get_tree+0x105/0x220 fs/fs_context.c:610 vfs_get_tree+0x89/0x2f0 fs/super.c:1530 do_new_mount fs/namespace.c:3040 [inline] path_mount+0x1326/0x1e20 fs/namespace.c:3370 do_mount fs/namespace.c:3383 [inline] __do_sys_mount fs/namespace.c:3591 [inline] __se_sys_mount fs/namespace.c:3568 [inline] __x64_sys_mount+0x27f/0x300 fs/namespace.c:3568 do_syscall_x64 arch/x86/entry/common.c:50 [inline] do_syscall_64+0x35/0xb0 arch/x86/entry/common.c:80 entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe+0x63/0xcd [...] </TASK> The buggy address belongs to the physical page: page:ffffea0001f8d400 refcount:1 mapcount:0 mapping:0000000000000000 index:0x0 pfn:0x7e350 head:ffffea0001f8d400 order:3 compound_mapcount:0 compound_pincount:0 flags: 0xfff00000010200(slab|head|node=0|zone=1|lastcpupid=0x7ff) raw: 00fff00000010200 0000000000000000 dead000000000122 ffff888011842140 raw: 0000000000000000 0000000000040004 00000001ffffffff 0000000000000000 page dumped because: kasan: bad access detected Memory state around the buggy address: ffff88807e351f00: fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc ffff88807e351f80: fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc >ffff88807e352000: fa fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ^ ffff88807e352080: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ffff88807e352100: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ================================================================== Kernel will loads $MFT/$DATA's first mft record in ntfs_read_inode_mount(). Yet the problem is that after loading, kernel doesn't check whether attrs_offset field is a valid value. To be more specific, if attrs_offset field is larger than bytes_allocated field, then it may trigger the out-of-bounds read bug(reported as use-after-free bug) in ntfs_attr_find(), when kernel tries to access the corresponding mft record's attribute. This patch solves it by adding the sanity check between attrs_offset field and bytes_allocated field, after loading the first mft record. 2022-07-14fs/buffer: Combine two submit_bh() and ll_rw_block() argumentsBart Van Assche5-8/+8
Both submit_bh() and ll_rw_block() accept a request operation type and request flags as their first two arguments. Micro-optimize these two functions by combining these first two arguments into a single argument. This patch does not change the behavior of any of the modified code. If read_mapping_page() encounters an error, it returns an errno, not a page with PageError set, so this is dead code. Signed-off-by: Matthew Wilcox (Oracle) <willy@infradead.org>
