Pull block layer updates from Jens Axboe: "This is the main block pull request this series. Contrary to previous release, I've kept the core and driver changes in the same branch. We always ended up having dependencies between the two for obvious reasons, so makes more sense to keep them together. That said, I'll probably try and keep more topical branches going forward, especially for cycles that end up being as busy as this one. The major parts of this pull request is: - Improved support for O_DIRECT on block devices, with a small private implementation instead of using the pig that is fs/direct-io.c. From Christoph. - Request completion tracking in a scalable fashion. This is utilized by two components in this pull, the new hybrid polling and the writeback queue throttling code. - Improved support for polling with O_DIRECT, adding a hybrid mode that combines pure polling with an initial sleep. From me. - Support for automatic throttling of writeback queues on the block side. This uses feedback from the device completion latencies to scale the queue on the block side up or down. From me. - Support from SMR drives in the block layer and for SD. From Hannes and Shaun. - Multi-connection support for nbd. From Josef. - Cleanup of request and bio flags, so we have a clear split between which are bio (or rq) private, and which ones are shared. From Christoph. - A set of patches from Bart, that improve how we handle queue stopping and starting in blk-mq. - Support for WRITE_ZEROES from Chaitanya. - Lightnvm updates from Javier/Matias. - Supoort for FC for the nvme-over-fabrics code. 2016-11-04fs: Add helper to clean bdev aliases under a bh and use itJan Kara2-4/+3
Add a helper function that clears buffer heads from a block device aliasing passed bh. Use this helper function from filesystems instead of the original unmap_underlying_metadata() to save some boiler plate code and also have a better name for the functionalily since it is not unmapping anything for a *long* time. 2016-09-28fs: Replace current_fs_time() with current_time()Deepa Dinamani2-2/+2
current_fs_time() uses struct super_block* as an argument. As per Linus's suggestion, this is changed to take struct inode* as a parameter instead. This is because the function is primarily meant for vfs inode timestamps. Also the function was renamed as per Arnd's suggestion. 2016-07-28Merge branch 'salted-string-hash'Linus Torvalds1-1/+1
This changes the vfs dentry hashing to mix in the parent pointer at the _beginning_ of the hash, rather than at the end. That actually improves both the hash and the code generation, because we can move more of the computation to the "static" part of the dcache setup, and do less at lookup runtime. It turns out that a lot of other hash users also really wanted to mix in a base pointer as a 'salt' for the hash, and so the slightly extended interface ends up working well for other cases too. Users that want a string hash that is purely about the string pass in a 'salt' pointer of NULL. * merge branch 'salted-string-hash': fs/dcache.c: Save one 32-bit multiply in dcache lookup vfs: make the string hashes salt the hash

2016-06-11vfs: make the string hashes salt the hashLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov14-187/+187
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2016-01-15kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcgVladimir Davydov1-2/+2
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). 2015-06-25mm: do not ignore mapping_gfp_mask in page cache allocation pathsMichal Hocko1-1/+2
page_cache_read, do_generic_file_read, __generic_file_splice_read and __ntfs_grab_cache_pages currently ignore mapping_gfp_mask when calling add_to_page_cache_lru which might cause recursion into fs down in the direct reclaim path if the mapping really relies on GFP_NOFS semantic. This doesn't seem to be the case now because page_cache_read (page fault path) doesn't seem to suffer from the reclaim recursion issues and do_generic_file_read and __generic_file_splice_read also shouldn't be called under fs locks which would deadlock in the reclaim path. marked later on Mel Gorman's commit 2457aec63745 ("mm: non-atomically mark page accessed during page cache allocation where possible") removed mark_page_accessed() calls from NTFS without updating the matching find_lock_page() to find_get_page_flags(GFP_LOCK | FGP_ACCESSED) thus causing the page to never be marked accessed. This patch fixes that. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs Pull vfs updates from Al Viro: "This the bunch that sat in -next + lock_parent() fix. This is the minimal set; there's more pending stuff. In particular, I really hope to get acct.c fixes merged this cycle - we need that to deal sanely with delayed-mntput stuff. In the next pile, hopefully - that series is fairly short and localized (kernel/acct.c, fs/super.c and fs/namespace.c). In this pile: more iov_iter work. Most of prereqs for ->splice_write with sane locking order are there and Kent's dio rewrite would also fit nicely on top of this pile" * 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs: (70 commits) lock_parent: don't step on stale ->d_parent of all-but-freed one kill generic_file_splice_write() ceph: switch to iter_file_splice_write() shmem: switch to iter_file_splice_write() nfs: switch to iter_splice_write_file() fs/splice.c: remove unneeded exports ocfs2: switch to iter_file_splice_write() ->splice_write() via ->write_iter() bio_vec-backed iov_iter optimize copy_page_{to,from}_iter() bury generic_file_aio_{read,write} lustre: get rid of messing with iovecs ceph: switch to ->write_iter() ceph_sync_direct_write: stop poking into iov_iter guts ceph_sync_read: stop poking into iov_iter guts new helper: copy_page_from_iter() fuse: switch to ->write_iter() btrfs: switch to ->write_iter() ocfs2: switch to ->write_iter() xfs: switch to ->write_iter() ...
