Pull io_uring thread rewrite from Jens Axboe: "This converts the io-wq workers to be forked off the tasks in question instead of being kernel threads that assume various bits of the original task identity. This kills > 400 lines of code from io_uring/io-wq, and it's the worst part of the code. We've had several bugs in this area, and the worry is always that we could be missing some pieces for file types doing unusual things (recent /dev/tty example comes to mind, userfaultfd reads installing file descriptors is another fun one... - both of which need special handling, and I bet it's not the last weird oddity we'll find). With these identical workers, we can have full confidence that we're never missing anything. That, in itself, is a huge win. Outside of that, it's also more efficient since we're not wasting space and code on tracking state, or switching between different states. I'm sure we're going to find little things to patch up after this series, but testing has been pretty thorough, from the usual regression suite to production. Any issue that may crop up should be manageable. There's also a nice series of further reductions we can do on top of this, but I wanted to get the meat of it out sooner rather than later. The general worry here isn't that it's fundamentally broken. Most of the little issues we've found over the last week have been related to just changes in how thread startup/exit is done, since that's the main difference between using kthreads and these kinds of threads. In fact, if all goes according to plan, I want to get this into the 5.10 and 5.11 stable branches as well. 2021-02-26proc: use kvzalloc for our kernel bufferJosef Bacik1-2/+2
Since sysctl: pass kernel pointers to ->proc_handler we have been pre-allocating a buffer to copy the data from the proc handlers into, and then copying that to userspace. The problem is this just blindly kzalloc()'s the buffer size passed in from the read, which in the case of our 'cat' binary was 64kib. Order-4 allocations are not awesome, and since we can potentially allocate up to our maximum order, so use kvzalloc for these buffers. In the systems with hundreds of processors it can be GBs of memory. For example, for a 96 CPUs system, the threshold is the maximum number of 125. And the per cpu counters can cache 23.4375 GB in total. The THP page is already a form of batched addition (it will add 512 worth of memory in one go) so skipping the batching seems like sensible. Although every THP stats update overflows the per-cpu counter, resorting to atomic global updates. But it can make the statistics more accuracy for the THP vmstat counters. So we convert the NR_FILE_PMDMAPPED account to pages. This patch is consistent with 8f182270dfec ("mm/swap.c: flush lru pvecs on compound page arrival"). Doing this also can make the unit of vmstat counters more unified. Finally, the unit of the vmstat counters are pages, kB and bytes. The B/KB suffix can tell us that the unit is bytes or kB. The rest which is without suffix are pages. Simply put, different mounts can expose the same file or directory with different ownership. This initial implementation comes with ports for fat, ext4 and with Christoph's port for xfs with more filesystems being actively worked on by independent people and maintainers. Idmapping mounts handle a wide range of long standing use-cases. Here are just a few: - Idmapped mounts make it possible to easily share files between multiple users or multiple machines especially in complex scenarios. For example, idmapped mounts will be used in the implementation of portable home directories in systemd-homed.service(8) where they allow users to move their home directory to an external storage device and use it on multiple computers where they are assigned different uids and gids. This effectively makes it possible to assign random uids and gids at login time. - It is possible to share files from the host with unprivileged containers without having to change ownership permanently through chown(2). - It is possible to idmap a container's rootfs and without having to mangle every file. For example, Chromebooks use it to share the user's Download folder with their unprivileged containers in their Linux subsystem. - It is possible to share files between containers with non-overlapping idmappings. - Filesystem that lack a proper concept of ownership such as fat can use idmapped mounts to implement discretionary access (DAC) permission checking. - They allow users to efficiently changing ownership on a per-mount basis without having to (recursively) chown(2) all files. In contrast to chown (2) changing ownership of large sets of files is instantenous with idmapped mounts. This is especially useful when ownership of a whole root filesystem of a virtual machine or container is changed. With idmapped mounts a single syscall mount_setattr syscall will be sufficient to change the ownership of all files. - Idmapped mounts always take the current ownership into account as idmappings specify what a given uid or gid is supposed to be mapped to. This contrasts with the chown(2) syscall which cannot by itself take the current ownership of the files it changes into account. It simply changes the ownership to the specified uid and gid. This is especially problematic when recursively chown(2)ing a large set of files which is commong with the aforementioned portable home directory and container and vm scenario. - Idmapped mounts allow to change ownership locally, restricting it to specific mounts, and temporarily as the ownership changes only apply as long as the mount exists. It already helped to discover an unrelated xfs setgid inheritance bug which has since been fixed in mainline. It will be sent for inclusion with the xfstests project should you decide to merge this. In order to support per-mount idmappings vfsmounts are marked with user namespaces. The idmapping of the user namespace will be used to map the ids of vfs objects when they are accessed through that mount. By default all vfsmounts are marked with the initial user namespace. The initial user namespace is used to indicate that a mount is not idmapped. All operations behave as before and this is verified in the testsuite. Based on prior discussions we want to attach the whole user namespace and not just a dedicated idmapping struct. This allows us to reuse all the helpers that already exist for dealing with idmappings instead of introducing a whole new range of helpers. In addition, if we decide in the future that we are confident enough to enable unprivileged users to setup idmapped mounts the permission checking can take into account whether the caller is privileged in the user namespace the mount is currently marked with. The user namespace the mount will be marked with can be specified by passing a file descriptor refering to the user namespace as an argument to the new mount_setattr() syscall together with the new MOUNT_ATTR_IDMAP flag. The system call follows the openat2() pattern of extensibility. The following conditions must be met in order to create an idmapped mount: - The caller must currently have the CAP_SYS_ADMIN capability in the user namespace the underlying filesystem has been mounted in. - The underlying filesystem must support idmapped mounts. - The mount must not already be idmapped. This also implies that the idmapping of a mount cannot be altered once it has been idmapped. - The mount must be a detached/anonymous mount, i.e. it must have been created by calling open_tree() with the OPEN_TREE_CLONE flag and it must not already have been visible in the filesystem. The last two points guarantee easier semantics for userspace and the kernel and make the implementation significantly simpler. By default vfsmounts are marked with the initial user namespace and no behavioral or performance changes are observed. The patches to convert individual filesystem are not very large or complicated overall as can be seen from the included fat, ext4, and xfs ports. Patches for other filesystems are actively worked on and will be sent out separately. The xfstestsuite can be used to verify that port has been done correctly. The mount_setattr() syscall is motivated independent of the idmapped mounts patches and it's been around since July 2019. One of the most valuable features of the new mount api is the ability to perform mounts based on file descriptors only. Together with the lookup restrictions available in the openat2() RESOLVE_* flag namespace which we added in v5.6 this is the first time we are close to hardened and race-free (e.g. symlinks) mounting and path resolution. While userspace has started porting to the new mount api to mount proper filesystems and create new bind-mounts it is currently not possible to change mount options of an already existing bind mount in the new mount api since the mount_setattr() syscall is missing. With the addition of the mount_setattr() syscall we remove this last restriction and userspace can now fully port to the new mount api, covering every use-case the old mount api could. We also add the crucial ability to recursively change mount options for a whole mount tree, both removing and adding mount options at the same time. This syscall has been requested multiple times by various people and projects. There is a simple tool available at https://github.com/brauner/mount-idmapped that allows to create idmapped mounts so people can play with this patch series. 2021-01-29mm: proc: Invalidate TLB after clearing soft-dirty page stateWill Deacon1-4/+5
Since commit 0758cd830494 ("asm-generic/tlb: avoid potential double flush"), TLB invalidation is elided in tlb_finish_mmu() if no entries were batched via the tlb_remove_*() functions. Consequently, the page-table modifications performed by clear_refs_write() in response to a write to /proc/<pid>/clear_refs do not perform TLB invalidation. Although this is fine when simply aging the ptes, in the case of clearing the "soft-dirty" state we can end up with entries where pte_write() is false, yet a writable mapping remains in the TLB. Fix this by avoiding the mmu_gather API altogether: managing both the 'tlb_flush_pending' flag on the 'mm_struct' and explicit TLB invalidation for the sort-dirty path, much like mprotect() does already. The process_sysctl_arg() does not check whether val is empty before invoking strlen(val). If the command line parameter () is incorrectly configured and val is empty, oops is triggered. Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. 2020-12-16proc: provide details on indirect branch speculationAnand K Mistry1-0/+28
Similar to speculation store bypass, show information about the indirect branch speculation mode of a task in /proc/$pid/status. For testing/benchmarking, I needed to see whether IB (Indirect Branch) speculation (see Spectre-v2) is enabled on a task, to see whether an IBPB instruction should be executed on an address space switch. Unfortunately, this information isn't available anywhere else and currently the only way to get it is to hack the kernel to expose it (like this change). It also helped expose a bug with conditional IB speculation on certain CPUs. Another place this could be useful is to audit the system when using sanboxing. With this change, I can confirm that seccomp-enabled process have IB speculation force disabled as expected when the kernel command line parameter `spectre_v2_user=seccomp`. Since there's already a 'Speculation_Store_Bypass' field, I used that as precedent for adding this one. 2020-12-15arm: remove CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_HOLES_MEMORYMODELMike Rapoport1-2/+0
ARM is the only architecture that defines CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_HOLES_MEMORYMODEL which in turn enables memmap_valid_within() function that is intended to verify existence of struct page associated with a pfn when there are holes in the memory map. However, the ARCH_HAS_HOLES_MEMORYMODEL also enables HAVE_ARCH_PFN_VALID and arch-specific pfn_valid() implementation that also deals with the holes in the memory map. The only two users of memmap_valid_within() call this function after a call to pfn_valid() so the memmap_valid_within() check becomes redundant. Remove CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_HOLES_MEMORYMODEL and memmap_valid_within() and rely entirely on ARM's implementation of pfn_valid() that is now enabled unconditionally. To fix 'btime' virtualization we simply subtract the offset of the time namespace's boottime from btime before printing the stats. This avoids that processes shown by tools such as 'ps' appear as time travelers in the corresponding time namespace. When we try to visit the pagemap of a tagged userspace pointer, we find that the start_vaddr is not correct because of the tag. To fix it, we should untag the userspace pointers in pagemap_read(). I tested with 5.10-rc4 and the issue remains. Explanation from Catalin in [1]: "Arguably, that's a user-space bug since tagged file offsets were never supported. In this case it's not even a tag at bit 56 as per the arm64 tagged address ABI but rather down to bit 47. You could say that the problem is caused by the C library (malloc()) or whoever created the tagged vaddr and passed it to this function. It's not a kernel regression as we've never supported it. Now, pagemap is a special case where the offset is usually not generated as a classic file offset but rather derived by shifting a user virtual address. 2020-12-10exec: Transform exec_update_mutex into a rw_semaphoreEric W. Biederman1-5/+5
Recently syzbot reported[0] that there is a deadlock amongst the users of exec_update_mutex. The problematic lock ordering found by lockdep was: perf_event_open (exec_update_mutex -> ovl_i_mutex) chown (ovl_i_mutex -> sb_writes) sendfile (sb_writes -> p->lock) by reading from a proc file and writing to overlayfs proc_pid_syscall (p->lock -> exec_update_mutex) While looking at possible solutions it occured to me that all of the users and possible users involved only wanted to state of the given process to remain the same. They are all readers. The only writer is exec. There is no reason for readers to block on each other. So fix this deadlock by transforming exec_update_mutex into a rw_semaphore named exec_update_lock that only exec takes for writing. When discussing[1] exec and posix file locks it was realized that none of the callers of get_files_struct fundamentally needed to call get_files_struct, and that by switching them to helper functions instead it will both simplify their code and remove unnecessary increments of files_struct.count. Those unnecessary increments can result in exec unnecessarily unsharing files_struct which breaking posix locks, and it can result in fget_light having to fallback to fget reducing system performance. Instead hold task_lock for the duration that task->files needs to be stable in seq_show. The task_lock was already taken in get_files_struct, and so skipping get_files_struct performs less work overall, and avoids the problems with the files_struct reference count. As task_lookup_fd_rcu may update the fd ctx->pos has been changed to be the fd +2 after task_lookup_fd_rcu returns. This change renames fcheck_files to files_lookup_fd_rcu. All of the remaining callers take the rcu_read_lock before calling this function so the _rcu suffix is appropriate. This change also tightens up the debug check to verify that all callers hold the rcu_read_lock. All callers that used to call files_check with the files->file_lock held have now been changed to call files_lookup_fd_locked. This change of name has helped remind me of which locks and which guarantees are in place helping me to catch bugs later in the patchset. The need for better names became apparent in the last round of discussion of this set of changes[1]. Currently the kernel does not provide an infrastructure to translate architecture numbers to a human-readable name. Translating syscall numbers to syscall names is possible through FTRACE_SYSCALL infrastructure but it does not provide support for compat syscalls. This will create a file for each PID as /proc/pid/seccomp_cache. The file will be empty when no seccomp filters are loaded, or be in the format of: <arch name> <decimal syscall number> <ALLOW | FILTER> where ALLOW means the cache is guaranteed to allow the syscall, and filter means the cache will pass the syscall to the BPF filter.
