2023-06-01fbdev: Add initializer macros for struct fb_opsThomas Zimmermann1-0/+112
For framebuffers in I/O and system memory, add macros that set struct fb_ops to the respective callback functions. For deferred I/O, add macros that generate callback functions with damage handling. Add initializer macros that set struct fb_ops to the generated callbacks. These macros can remove a lot boilerplate code from fbdev drivers. The drivers are supposed to use the macro that is required for its framebuffer. Each macro is split into smaller helpers, so that drivers with non-standard callbacks can pick and customize callbacks as needed. 2023-05-18fbdev: Move framebuffer I/O helpers into <asm/fb.h>Thomas Zimmermann1-53/+0
Implement framebuffer I/O helpers, such as fb_read*() and fb_write*(), in the architecture's <asm/fb.h> header file or the generic one. The common case has been the use of regular I/O functions, such as __raw_readb() or memset_io(). A few architectures used plain system- memory reads and writes. Sparc used helpers for its SBus. The architectures that used special cases provide the same code in their __raw_*() I/O helpers. 2023-05-08fbdev: Move I/O read and write code into helper functionsThomas Zimmermann1-0/+10
Move the existing I/O read and write code for I/O memory into the new helpers fb_cfb_read() and fb_cfb_write(). Make them the default fp_ops. No functional changes. In the near term, the new functions will be useful to the DRM subsystem, which currently provides it's own implementation. It can then use the shared code. In the longer term, it might make sense to revise the I/O helper's default status and make them opt-in by the driver. 2023-03-10fbdev: Fix incorrect page mapping clearance at fb_deferred_io_release()Takashi Iwai1-0/+1
The recent fix for the deferred I/O by the commit 3efc61d95259 ("fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devices") caused a regression when the same fb device is opened/closed while it's being used. It resulted in a frozen screen even if something is redrawn there after the close. The breakage is because the patch was made under a wrong assumption of a single open; in the current code, fb_deferred_io_release() cleans up the page mapping of the pageref list and it calls cancel_delayed_work_sync() unconditionally, where both are no correct behavior for multiple opens. This patch adds a refcount for the opens of the device, and applies the cleanup only when all files get closed. As both fb_deferred_io_open() and _close() are called always in the fb_info lock (mutex), it's safe to use the normal int for the refcounting. Also, a useless BUG_ON() is dropped. 2023-02-10fbdev: Fix invalid page access after closing deferred I/O devicesTakashi Iwai1-0/+1
When a fbdev with deferred I/O is once opened and closed, the dirty pages still remain queued in the pageref list, and eventually later those may be processed in the delayed work. This may lead to a corruption of pages, hitting an Oops. This patch makes sure to cancel the delayed work and clean up the pageref list at closing the device for addressing the bug. A part of the cleanup code is factored out as a new helper function that is called from the common fb_release(). Support the kernel's nomodeset parameter for all PCI-based fbdev drivers that use aperture helpers to remove other, hardware-agnostic graphics drivers. The parameter is a simple way of using the firmware-provided scanout buffer if the hardware's native driver is broken. The same effect could be achieved with per-driver options, but the importance of the graphics output for many users makes a single, unified approach worthwhile. With nomodeset specified, the fbdev driver module will not load. This unifies behavior with similar DRM drivers. In DRM helpers, modules first check the nomodeset parameter before registering the PCI driver. As fbdev has no such module helpers, we have to modify each driver individually. The name 'nomodeset' is slightly misleading, but has been chosen for historical reasons. Several drivers implemented it before it became a general option for DRM. Schedule the deferred-I/O worker instead of the damage worker after writing to the fbdev framebuffer. The deferred-I/O worker then performs the dirty-fb update. The fbdev emulation will initialize deferred I/O for all drivers that require damage updates. It is therefore a valid assumption that the deferred-I/O worker is present. It would be possible to perform the damage handling directly from within the write operation. But doing this could increase the overhead of the write or interfere with a concurrently scheduled deferred-I/O worker. 2022-05-13fbdev: Restart conflicting fb removal loop when unregistering devicesJavier Martinez Canillas1-1/+0
Drivers that want to remove registered conflicting framebuffers prior to register their own framebuffer, call to remove_conflicting_framebuffers(). This function takes the registration_lock mutex, to prevent a race when drivers register framebuffer devices. But if a conflicting framebuffer device is found, the underlaying platform device is unregistered and this will lead to the platform driver .remove callback to be called. Which in turn will call to unregister_framebuffer() that takes the same lock. To prevent this, a struct fb_info.forced_out field was used as indication to unregister_framebuffer() whether the mutex has to be grabbed or not. But this could be unsafe, since the fbdev core is making assumptions about what drivers may or may not do in their .remove callbacks. Allowing to run these callbacks with the registration_lock held can cause deadlocks, since the fbdev core has no control over what drivers do in their removal path. A better solution is to drop the lock before platform_device_unregister(), so unregister_framebuffer() can take it when called from the fbdev driver. The lock is acquired again after the device has been unregistered and at this point the removal loop can be restarted. Since the conflicting framebuffer device has already been removed, the loop would just finish when no more conflicting framebuffers are found. Store the per-page state for fbdev's deferred I/O in struct fb_deferred_io_pageref. Maintain a list of pagerefs for the pages that have to be written back to video memory. Update all affected drivers. As with pages before, fbdev acquires a pageref when an mmaped page of the framebuffer is being written to. It holds the pageref in a list of all currently written pagerefs until it flushes the written pages to video memory. Writeback occurs periodically. After writeback fbdev releases all pagerefs and builds up a new dirty list until the next writeback occurs. Using pagerefs has a number of benefits. For pages of the framebuffer, the deferred I/O code used struct page.lru as an entry into the list of dirty pages. The lru field is owned by the page cache, which makes deferred I/O incompatible with some memory pages (e.g., most notably DRM's GEM SHMEM allocator). struct fb_deferred_io_pageref now provides an entry into a list of dirty framebuffer pages, freeing lru for use with the page cache. Drivers also assumed that struct page.index is the page offset into the framebuffer. This is not true for DRM buffers, which are located at various offset within a mapped area. struct fb_deferred_io_pageref explicitly stores an offset into the framebuffer. struct page.index is now only the page offset into the mapped area. 2022-02-16fbdev: Don't sort deferred-I/O pages by defaultThomas Zimmermann1-0/+1
Fbdev's deferred I/O sorts all dirty pages by default, which incurs a significant overhead. Make the sorting step optional and update the few drivers that require it. Use a FIFO list by default. Most fbdev drivers with deferred I/O build a bounding rectangle around the dirty pages or simply flush the whole screen. The only two affected DRM drivers, generic fbdev and vmwgfx, both use a bounding rectangle. In those cases, the exact order of the pages doesn't matter. The other drivers look at the page index or handle pages one-by-one. The patch sets the sort_pagelist flag for those, even though some of them would probably work correctly without sorting. Driver maintainers should update their driver accordingly. Sorting pages by memory offset for deferred I/O performs an implicit bubble-sort step on the list of dirty pages. The algorithm goes through the list of dirty pages and inserts each new page according to its index field. Even worse, list traversal always starts at the first entry. As video memory is most likely updated scanline by scanline, the algorithm traverses through the complete list for each updated page. For example, with 1024x768x32bpp each page covers exactly one scanline. Writing a single screen update from top to bottom requires updating 768 pages. With an average list length of 384 entries, a screen update creates (768 * 384 =) 294912 compare operation. Fix this by making the sorting step opt-in and update the few drivers that require it. All other drivers work with unsorted page lists. Pages are appended to the list. Therefore, in the common case of writing the framebuffer top to bottom, pages are still sorted by offset, which may have a positive effect on performance. 2022-02-02Revert "fbdev: Garbage collect fbdev scrolling acceleration, part 1 (from ↵Helge Deller1-1/+1
TODO list)" This reverts commit b3ec8cdf457e5e63d396fe1346cc788cf7c1b578. Revert the second (of 2) commits which disabled scrolling acceleration in fbcon/fbdev. It introduced a regression for fbdev-supported graphic cards because of the performance penalty by doing screen scrolling by software instead of using the existing graphic card 2D hardware acceleration. Console scrolling acceleration was disabled by dropping code which checked at runtime the driver hardware capabilities for the BINFO_HWACCEL_COPYAREA or FBINFO_HWACCEL_FILLRECT flags and if set, it enabled scrollmode SCROLL_MOVE which uses hardware acceleration to move screen contents. After dropping those checks scrollmode was hard-wired to SCROLL_REDRAW instead, which forces all graphic cards to redraw every character at the new screen position when scrolling. This change effectively disabled all hardware-based scrolling acceleration for ALL drivers, because now all kind of 2D hardware acceleration (bitblt, fillrect) in the drivers isn't used any longer. The original commit message mentions that only 3 DRM drivers (nouveau, omapdrm and gma500) used hardware acceleration in the past and thus code for checking and using scrolling acceleration is obsolete. This statement is NOT TRUE, because beside the DRM drivers there are around 35 other fbdev drivers which depend on fbdev/fbcon and still provide hardware acceleration for fbdev/fbcon. The original commit message also states that syzbot found lots of bugs in fbcon and thus it's "often the solution to just delete code and remove features". This is true, and the bugs - which actually affected all users of fbcon, including DRM - were fixed, or code was dropped like e.g. the support for software scrollback in vgacon (commit 973c096f6a85). So to further analyze which bugs were found by syzbot, I've looked through all patches in drivers/video which were tagged with syzbot or syzkaller back to year 2005. The vast majority fixed the reported issues on a higher level, e.g. when screen is to be resized, or when font size is to be changed. The few ones which touched driver code fixed a real driver bug, e.g. by adding a check. But NONE of those patches touched code of either the SCROLL_MOVE or the SCROLL_REDRAW case. That means, there was no real reason why SCROLL_MOVE had to be ripped-out and just SCROLL_REDRAW had to be used instead. The only reason I can imagine so far was that SCROLL_MOVE wasn't used by DRM and as such it was assumed that it could go away. That argument completely missed the fact that SCROLL_MOVE is still heavily used by fbdev (non-DRM) drivers. Some people mention that using memcpy() instead of the hardware acceleration is pretty much the same speed. But that's not true, at least not for older graphic cards and machines where we see speed decreases by factor 10 and more and thus this change leads to console responsiveness way worse than before. That's why the original commit is to be reverted. By reverting we reintroduce hardware-based scrolling acceleration and fix the performance regression for fbdev drivers. There isn't any impact on DRM when reverting those patches. 2022-01-27fbdev: Hot-unplug firmware fb devices on forced removalThomas Zimmermann1-0/+1
Hot-unplug all firmware-framebuffer devices as part of removing them via remove_conflicting_framebuffers() et al. Releases all memory regions to be acquired by native drivers. Firmware, such as EFI, install a framebuffer while posting the computer. After removing the firmware-framebuffer device from fbdev, a native driver takes over the hardware and the firmware framebuffer becomes invalid. Firmware-framebuffer drivers, specifically simplefb, don't release their device from Linux' device hierarchy. It still owns the firmware framebuffer and blocks the native drivers from loading. This has been observed in the vmwgfx driver. [1] Initiating a device removal (i.e., hot unplug) as part of remove_conflicting_framebuffers() removes the underlying device and returns the memory range to the system. Commit ccf953d8f3d6 makes framebuffers which use deferred I/O stop displaying updates after the first one. This is because the pages handled by fb_defio no longer have a page_mapping(). That prevents page_mkclean() from marking the PTEs as clean, and so writes are only noticed the first time. syzbot is reporting OOB read bug in vc_do_resize() [1] caused by memcpy() based on outdated old_{rows,row_size} values, for resize_screen() can recurse into vc_do_resize() which changes vc->vc_{cols,rows} that outdates old_{rows,row_size} values which were saved before calling resize_screen(). Daniel Vetter explained that resize_screen() should not recurse into fbcon_update_vcs() path due to FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT being still set when calling resize_screen(). Instead of masking FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT before calling fbcon_update_vcs(), we can remove FBINFO_MISC_USEREVENT by calling fbcon_update_vcs() only if fb_set_var() returned 0. This change assumes that it is harmless to call fbcon_update_vcs() when fb_set_var() returned 0 without reaching fb_notifier_call_chain().
