2013-07-01jbd2: invalidate handle if jbd2_journal_restart() failsTheodore Ts'o1-1/+1
If jbd2_journal_restart() fails the handle will have been disconnected from the current transaction. In this situation, the handle must not be used for for any jbd2 function other than jbd2_journal_stop(). Enforce this with by treating a handle which has a NULL transaction pointer as an aborted handle, and issue a kernel warning if jbd2_journal_extent(), jbd2_journal_get_write_access(), jbd2_journal_dirty_metadata(), etc. is called with an invalid handle. This commit also fixes a bug where jbd2_journal_stop() would trip over a kernel jbd2 assertion check when trying to free an invalid handle. Also move the responsibility of setting current->journal_info to start_this_handle(), simplifying the three users of this function. 2013-06-04jbd2: transaction reservation supportJan Kara1-4/+24
In some cases we cannot start a transaction because of locking constraints and passing started transaction into those places is not handy either because we could block transaction commit for too long. Transaction reservation is designed to solve these issues. It reserves a handle with given number of credits in the journal and the handle can be later attached to the running transaction without blocking on commit or checkpointing. Reserved handles do not block transaction commit in any way, they only reduce maximum size of the running transaction (because we have to always be prepared to accomodate request for attaching reserved handle). 2013-06-04jbd2: cleanup needed free block estimates when starting a transactionJan Kara1-6/+26
__jbd2_log_space_left() and jbd_space_needed() were kind of odd. jbd_space_needed() accounted also credits needed for currently committing transaction while it didn't account for credits needed for control blocks. __jbd2_log_space_left() then accounted for control blocks as a fraction of free space. Since results of these two functions are always only compared against each other, this works correct but is somewhat strange. Move the estimates so that jbd_space_needed() returns number of blocks needed for a transaction including control blocks and __jbd2_log_space_left() returns free space in the journal (with the committing transaction already subtracted). Rename functions to jbd2_log_space_left() and jbd2_space_needed() while we are changing them. 2013-06-04jbd2: refine waiting for shadow buffersJan Kara1-0/+28
Currently when we add a buffer to a transaction, we wait until the buffer is removed from BJ_Shadow list (so that we prevent any changes to the buffer that is just written to the journal). This can take unnecessarily long as a lot happens between the time the buffer is submitted to the journal and the time when we remove the buffer from BJ_Shadow list. (e.g. We wait for all data buffers in the transaction, we issue a cache flush, etc.) Also this creates a dependency of do_get_write_access() on transaction commit (namely waiting for data IO to complete) which we want to avoid when implementing transaction reservation. So we modify commit code to set new BH_Shadow flag when temporary shadowing buffer is created and we clear that flag once IO on that buffer is complete. This allows do_get_write_access() to wait only for BH_Shadow bit and thus removes the dependency on data IO completion. 2013-06-04jbd2: don't create journal_head for temporary journal buffersJan Kara1-16/+16
When writing metadata to the journal, we create temporary buffer heads for that task. We also attach journal heads to these buffer heads but the only purpose of the journal heads is to keep buffers linked in transaction's BJ_IO list. We remove the need for journal heads by reusing buffer_head's b_assoc_buffers list for that purpose. Also since BJ_IO list is just a temporary list for transaction commit, we use a private list in jbd2_journal_commit_transaction() for that thus removing BJ_IO list from transaction completely. 2013-04-04ext4/jbd2: don't wait (forever) for stale tid caused by wraparoundTheodore Ts'o1-0/+1
In the case where an inode has a very stale transaction id (tid) in i_datasync_tid or i_sync_tid, it's possible that after a very large (2**31) number of transactions, that the tid number space might wrap, causing tid_geq()'s calculations to fail. Commit deeeaf13 "jbd2: fix fsync() tid wraparound bug", later modified by commit e7b04ac0 "jbd2: don't wake kjournald unnecessarily", attempted to fix this problem, but it only avoided kjournald spinning forever by fixing the logic in jbd2_log_start_commit(). Unfortunately, in the codepaths in fs/ext4/fsync.c and fs/ext4/inode.c that might call jbd2_log_start_commit() with a stale tid, those functions will subsequently call jbd2_log_wait_commit() with the same stale tid, and then wait for a very long time. To fix this, we replace the calls to jbd2_log_start_commit() and jbd2_log_wait_commit() with a call to a new function, jbd2_complete_transaction(), which will correctly handle stale tid's. As a bonus, jbd2_complete_transaction() will avoid locking j_state_lock for writing unless a commit needs to be started. This should have a small (but probably not measurable) improvement for ext4's scalability. 2013-02-10jbd2: use module parameters instead of debugfs for jbd_debugTheodore Ts'o1-2/+1
There are multiple reasons to move away from debugfs. First of all, we are only using it for a single parameter, and it is much more complicated to set up (some 30 lines of code compared to 3), and one more thing that might fail while loading the jbd2 module. Secondly, as a module paramter it can be specified as a boot option if jbd2 is built into the kernel, or as a parameter when the module is loaded, and it can also be manipulated dynamically under /sys/module/jbd2/parameters/jbd2_debug. So it is more flexible. Ultimately we want to move away from using jbd_debug() towards tracepoints, but for now this is still a useful simplification of the code base. 2012-12-25ext4: fix deadlock in journal_unmap_buffer()Jan Kara1-1/+1
We cannot wait for transaction commit in journal_unmap_buffer() because we hold page lock which ranks below transaction start. We solve the issue by bailing out of journal_unmap_buffer() and jbd2_journal_invalidatepage() with -EBUSY. Caller is then responsible for waiting for transaction commit to finish and try invalidation again. Since the issue can happen only for page stradding i_size, it is simple enough to manually call jbd2_journal_invalidatepage() for such page from ext4_setattr(), check the return value and wait if necessary. 2012-08-06ext4: make sure the journal sb is written in ext4_clear_journal_err()Theodore Ts'o1-0/+1
After we transfer set the EXT4_ERROR_FS bit in the file system superblock, it's not enough to call jbd2_journal_clear_err() to clear the error indication from journal superblock --- we need to call jbd2_journal_update_sb_errno() as well. Otherwise, when the root file system is mounted read-only, the journal is replayed, and the error indicator is transferred to the superblock --- but the s_errno field in the jbd2 superblock is left set (since although we cleared it in memory, we never flushed it out to disk). This can end up confusing e2fsck. We should make e2fsck more robust in this case, but the kernel shouldn't be leaving things in this confused state, either. 2012-03-14jbd2: cleanup journal tail after transaction commitJan Kara1-0/+1
Normally, we have to issue a cache flush before we can update journal tail in journal superblock, effectively wiping out old transactions from the journal. So use the fact that during transaction commit we issue cache flush anyway and opportunistically push journal tail as far as we can. Since update of journal superblock is still costly (we have to use WRITE_FUA), we update log tail only if we can free significant amount of space. 2012-03-14jbd2: issue cache flush after checkpointing even with internal journalJan Kara1-1/+5
When we reach jbd2_cleanup_journal_tail(), there is no guarantee that checkpointed buffers are on a stable storage - especially if buffers were written out by jbd2_log_do_checkpoint(), they are likely to be only in disk's caches. Thus when we update journal superblock effectively removing old transaction from journal, this write of superblock can get to stable storage before those checkpointed buffers which can result in filesystem corruption after a crash. Thus we must unconditionally issue a cache flush before we update journal superblock in these cases. A similar problem can also occur if journal superblock is written only in disk's caches, other transaction starts reusing space of the transaction cleaned from the log and power failure happens. Subsequent journal replay would still try to replay the old transaction but some of it's blocks may be already overwritten by the new transaction. For this reason we must use WRITE_FUA when updating log tail and we must first write new log tail to disk and update in-memory information only after that. 2011-12-29jbd2: clear revoked flag on buffers before a new transaction startedYongqiang Yang1-0/+1
Currently, we clear revoked flag only when a block is reused. However, this can tigger a false journal error. Consider a situation when a block is used as a meta block and is deleted(revoked) in ordered mode, then the block is allocated as a data block to a file. At this moment, user changes the file's journal mode from ordered to journaled and truncates the file. The block will be considered re-revoked by journal because it has revoked flag still pending from the last transaction and an assertion triggers. We fix the problem by keeping the revoked status more uptodate - we clear revoked flag when switching revoke tables to reflect there is no revoked buffers in current transaction any more. 2011-06-13jbd2: Fix oops in jbd2_journal_remove_journal_head()Jan Kara1-2/+0
jbd2_journal_remove_journal_head() can oops when trying to access journal_head returned by bh2jh(). This is caused for example by the following race: TASK1 TASK2 jbd2_journal_commit_transaction() ... processing t_forget list __jbd2_journal_refile_buffer(jh); if (!jh->b_transaction) { jbd_unlock_bh_state(bh); jbd2_journal_try_to_free_buffers() jbd2_journal_grab_journal_head(bh) jbd_lock_bh_state(bh) __journal_try_to_free_buffer() jbd2_journal_put_journal_head(jh) jbd2_journal_remove_journal_head(bh); jbd2_journal_put_journal_head() in TASK2 sees that b_jcount == 0 and buffer is not part of any transaction and thus frees journal_head before TASK1 gets to doing so. Note that even buffer_head can be released by try_to_free_buffers() after jbd2_journal_put_journal_head() which adds even larger opportunity for oops (but I didn't see this happen in reality). Fix the problem by making transactions hold their own journal_head reference (in b_jcount). That way we don't have to remove journal_head explicitely via jbd2_journal_remove_journal_head() and instead just remove journal_head when b_jcount drops to zero. The result of this is that [__]jbd2_journal_refile_buffer(), [__]jbd2_journal_unfile_buffer(), and __jdb2_journal_remove_checkpoint() can free journal_head which needs modification of a few callers. Also we have to be careful because once journal_head is removed, buffer_head might be freed as well. So we have to get our own buffer_head reference where it matters. 2011-05-24jbd2: fix sending of data flush on journal commitJan Kara1-1/+3
In data=ordered mode, it's theoretically possible (however rare) that an inode is filed to transaction's t_inode_list and a flusher thread writes all the data and inode is reclaimed before the transaction starts to commit. In such a case, we could erroneously omit sending a flush to file system device when it is different from the journal device (because data can still be in disk cache only). Fix the problem by setting a flag in a transaction when some inode is added to it and then send disk flush in the commit code when the flag is set. 2011-03-21jbd2: add COW fields to struct jbd2_journal_handleAmir Goldstein1-3/+25
Add fields needed for the copy-on-write ext4 development work. The h_cowing flag is used by ext4 snapshots code to mark the task in COWING state. The h_XXX_credits fields are used to track buffer credits usage (accounted by COW and non-COW operations). The h_cow_XXX fields are used as per task debugging counters. Merging this commit into mainline will allow users to test ext4 snapshots as a standalone module, without the need to patch and install a development kernel. 2011-01-10ext4: dynamically allocate the jbd2_inode in ext4_inode_info as necessaryTheodore Ts'o1-2/+18
Replace the jbd2_inode structure (which is 48 bytes) with a pointer and only allocate the jbd2_inode when it is needed --- that is, when the file system has a journal present and the inode has been opened for writing. This allows us to further slim down the ext4_inode_info structure. Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
2010-10-28jbd2: Fix I/O hang in jbd2_journal_release_jbd_inodeBrian King1-1/+1
This fixes a hang seen in jbd2_journal_release_jbd_inode on a lot of Power 6 systems running with ext4. When we get in the hung state, all I/O to the disk in question gets blocked where we stay indefinitely. Looking at the task list, I can see we are stuck in jbd2_journal_release_jbd_inode waiting on a wake up. I added some debug code to detect this scenario and dump additional data if we were stuck in jbd2_journal_release_jbd_inode for longer than 30 minutes. When it hit, I was able to see that i_flags was 0, suggesting we missed the wake up. This patch changes i_flags to be an unsigned long, uses bit operators to access it, and adds barriers around the accesses. Prior to applying this patch, we were regularly hitting this hang on numerous systems in our test environment. After applying the patch, the hangs no longer occur. 2010-08-04jbd2: Remove t_handle_lock from start_this_handle()Theodore Ts'o1-1/+1
This should remove the last exclusive lock from start_this_handle(), so that we should now be able to start multiple transactions at the same time on large SMP systems. Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
2010-08-04jbd2: Change j_state_lock to be a rwlock_tTheodore Ts'o1-1/+1
Lockstat reports have shown that j_state_lock is a major source of lock contention, especially on systems with more than 4 CPU cores. So change it to be a read/write spinlock. Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
2010-08-02jbd2: Use atomic variables to avoid taking t_handle_lock in jbd2_journal_stopTheodore Ts'o1-4/+4
By using an atomic_t for t_updates and t_outstanding credits, this should allow us to not need to take transaction t_handle_lock in jbd2_journal_stop(). Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
2010-07-27jbd2: Remove __GFP_NOFAIL from jbd2 layerTheodore Ts'o1-1/+3
__GFP_NOFAIL is going away, so add our own retry loop. Also add jbd2__journal_start() and jbd2__journal_restart() which take a gfp mask, so that file systems can optionally (re)start transaction handles using GFP_KERNEL. If they do this, then they need to be prepared to handle receiving an PTR_ERR(-ENOMEM) error, and be ready to reflect that error up to userspace. Signed-off-by: "Theodore Ts'o" <tytso@mit.edu>
2010-07-16jbd2/ocfs2: Fix block checksumming when a buffer is used in several transactionsJan Kara1-5/+6
OCFS2 uses t_commit trigger to compute and store checksum of the just committed blocks. When a buffer has b_frozen_data, checksum is computed for it instead of b_data but this can result in an old checksum being written to the filesystem in the following scenario: 1) transaction1 is opened 2) handle1 is opened 3) journal_access(handle1, bh) - This sets jh->b_transaction to transaction1 4) modify(bh) 5) journal_dirty(handle1, bh) 6) handle1 is closed 7) start committing transaction1, opening transaction2 8) handle2 is opened 9) journal_access(handle2, bh) - This copies off b_frozen_data to make it safe for transaction1 to commit. jh->b_next_transaction is set to transaction2. 10) jbd2_journal_write_metadata() checksums b_frozen_data 11) the journal correctly writes b_frozen_data to the disk journal 12) handle2 is closed - There was no dirty call for the bh on handle2, so it is never queued for any more journal operation 13) Checkpointing finally happens, and it just spools the bh via normal buffer writeback. This will write b_data, which was never triggered on and thus contains a wrong (old) checksum. This patch fixes the problem by calling the trigger at the moment data is frozen for journal commit - i.e., either when b_frozen_data is created by do_get_write_access or just before we write a buffer to the log if b_frozen_data does not exist. We also rename the trigger to t_frozen as that better describes when it is called. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2010-03-05jbd[2]: remove references to BUFFER_DEBUGChristoph Egger1-11/+0
