2021-02-13driver core: platform: Drop of_device_node_put() wrapperRob Herring1-7/+0
of_device_node_put() is just a wrapper for of_node_put(). The platform driver core is already polluted with of_node pointers and the only 'get' already uses of_node_get() (though typically the get would happen in of_device_alloc()). Cc: "Rafael J. 2021-02-13of: Remove of_dev_{get,put}()Rob Herring1-3/+0
of_dev_get() and of_dev_put are just wrappers for get_device()/put_device() on a platform_device. There's also already platform_device_{get,put}() wrappers for this purpose. Let's update the few users and remove of_dev_{get,put}(). 2021-01-29of/device: Don't NULLify match table in of_match_device() with CONFIG_OF=nStephen Boyd1-3/+1
This effectively reverts 1db73ae39a97 ("of/device: Nullify match table in of_match_device() for CONFIG_OF=n") because that commit makes it more surprising to users of this API that the arguments may never be referenced by any code. This is because the pre-processor will replace the argument with NULL and then the match table will be left unreferenced by any code but the compiler optimizer doesn't know to drop it. This can lead to compilers warning that match tables are unused, when we really want to pass the match table to the API but have the compiler see that it's all inlined and not used and then drop the match table while silencing the warning. We're being too smart here and not giving the compiler the chance to do dead code elimination. 2020-07-28of/device: Add input id to of_dma_configure()Lorenzo Pieralisi1-2/+14
Devices sitting on proprietary busses have a device ID space that is owned by the respective bus and related firmware bindings. In order to let the generic OF layer handle the input translations to an IOMMU id, for such busses the current of_dma_configure() interface should be extended in order to allow the bus layer to provide the device input id parameter - that is retrieved/assigned in bus specific code and firmware. Augment of_dma_configure() to add an optional input_id parameter, leaving current functionality unchanged. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-04-20iommu: of: Handle IOMMU lookup failure with deferred probing or errorLaurent Pinchart1-3/+6
Failures to look up an IOMMU when parsing the DT iommus property need to be handled separately from the .of_xlate() failures to support deferred probing. The lack of a registered IOMMU can be caused by the lack of a driver for the IOMMU, the IOMMU device probe not having been performed yet, having been deferred, or having failed. The first case occurs when the device tree describes the bus master and IOMMU topology correctly but no device driver exists for the IOMMU yet or the device driver has not been compiled in. Return NULL, the caller will configure the device without an IOMMU. The second and third cases are handled by deferring the probe of the bus master device which will eventually get reprobed after the IOMMU. The last case is currently handled by deferring the probe of the bus master device as well. A mechanism to either configure the bus master device without an IOMMU or to fail the bus master device probe depending on whether the IOMMU is optional or mandatory would be a good enhancement. The <linux/device.h> header includes a lot of stuff, and it in turn gets a lot of use just for the basic "struct device" which appears so often. Clean up the users as follows: 1) For those headers only needing "struct device" as a pointer in fcn args, replace the include with exactly that. 2) For headers not really using anything from device.h, simply delete the include altogether. 3) For headers relying on getting device.h implicitly before being included themselves, now explicitly include device.h 4) For files in which doing #1 or #2 uncovers an implicit dependency on some other header, fix by explicitly adding the required header(s). Any C files that were implicitly relying on device.h to be present have already been dealt with in advance. Total removals from #1 and #2: 51. Total additions coming from #3: 9. Total other implicit dependencies from #4: 7. As of 3.3-rc1, there were 110, so a net removal of 42 gives about a 38% reduction in device.h presence in include/* Signed-off-by: Paul Gortmaker <paul.gortmaker@windriver.com>
2012-02-02drivercore: Output common devicetree information in ueventGrant Likely1-2/+6
When userspace needs to find a specific device, it currently isn't easy to resolve a /sys/devices/ path from a specific device tree node. Nor is it easy to obtain the compatible list for devices. This patch generalizes the code that inserts OF_* values into the uevent device attribute so that any device that is attached to an OF node will have that information exported to userspace. Without this patch only platform devices and some powerpc-specific busses have access to this data. The original function also creates a MODALIAS property for the compatible list, but that code has not been generalized into the common case because it has the potential to break module loading on a lot of bus types. Bus types are still responsible for their own MODALIAS properties. Boot tested on ARM and compile tested on PowerPC and SPARC. 2011-05-18drivercore: revert addition of of_match to struct deviceGrant Likely1-6/+6
Commit b826291c, "drivercore/dt: add a match table pointer to struct device" added an of_match pointer to struct device to cache the of_match_table entry discovered at driver match time. This was unsafe because matching is not an atomic operation with probing a driver. If two or more drivers are attempted to be matched to a driver at the same time, then the cached matching entry pointer could get overwritten. This patch reverts the of_match cache pointer and reworks all users to call of_match_device() directly instead. Signed-off-by: Grant Likely <grant.likely@secretlab.ca>
2011-05-18of: fix race when matching driversMilton Miller1-2/+6
If two drivers are probing devices at the same time, both will write their match table result to the dev->of_match cache at the same time. Only write the result if the device matches. In a thread titled "SBus devices sometimes detected, sometimes not", Meelis reported his SBus hme was not detected about 50% of the time. From the debug suggested by Grant it was obvious another driver matched some devices between the call to match the hme and the hme discovery failling. 2010-10-21of/device: Rework to use common platform_device_alloc() for allocating devicesGrant Likely1-6/+7
The current code allocates and manages platform_devices created from the device tree manually. It also uses an unsafe shortcut for allocating the platform_device and the resource table at the same time. (which I added in the last rework; sorry). This patch refactors the code to use platform_device_alloc() for allocating new devices. This reduces the amount of custom code implemented by of_platform, eliminates the unsafe alloc trick, and has the side benefit of letting the platform_bus code manage freeing the device data and resources when the device is freed. 2010-07-24of: Merge of_platform_bus_type with platform_bus_typeGrant Likely1-0/+6
of_platform_bus was being used in the same manner as the platform_bus. The only difference being that of_platform_bus devices are generated from data in the device tree, and platform_bus devices are usually statically allocated in platform code. Having them separate causes the problem of device drivers having to be registered twice if it was possible for the same device to appear on either bus. This patch removes of_platform_bus_type and registers all of_platform bus devices and drivers on the platform bus instead. A previous patch made the of_device structure an alias for the platform_device structure, and a shim is used to adapt of_platform_drivers to the platform bus. After all of of_platform_bus drivers are converted to be normal platform drivers, the shim code can be removed. Signed-off-by: Grant Likely <grant.likely@secretlab.ca> Acked-by: David S. 2010-06-28of: kill struct of_deviceGrant Likely1-0/+17
Now that the device tree node pointer has been moved out of struct of_device and into the common struct device, there isn't anything unique about of_device anymore. In fact, there isn't much need for a separate of_bus when all busses have access to OF style probing. arch/powerpc and arch/microblaze are moving away from using the of_bus and using the regular platform bus instead for mmio devices.
