2019-07-17mm: introduce ARCH_HAS_PTE_DEVMAPRobin Murphy1-2/+2
ARCH_HAS_ZONE_DEVICE is somewhat meaningless in itself, and combined with the long-out-of-date comment can lead to the impression than an architecture may just enable it (since __add_pages() now "comprehends device memory" for itself) and expect things to work. In practice, however, ZONE_DEVICE users have little chance of functioning correctly without __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_DEVMAP, so let's clean that up the same way as ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL and make it the proper dependency so the real situation is clearer. 2019-06-29mm/dev_pfn: exclude MEMORY_DEVICE_PRIVATE while computing virtual addressAnshuman Khandual1-1/+1
The presence of struct page does not guarantee linear mapping for the pfn physical range. Device private memory which is non-coherent is excluded from linear mapping during devm_memremap_pages() though they will still have struct page coverage. Change pfn_t_to_virt() to just check for device private memory before giving out virtual address for a given pfn. pfn_t_to_virt() actually has no callers. Let's fix it for the 5.2 kernel and remove it in 5.3. 2018-10-27include/linux/pfn_t.h: force '~' to be parsed as an unary operatorSebastien Boisvert1-1/+1
Tracing the event "fs_dax:dax_pmd_insert_mapping" with perf produces this warning: [fs_dax:dax_pmd_insert_mapping] unknown op '~' It is printed in process_op (tools/lib/traceevent/event-parse.c) because '~' is parsed as a binary operator. perf reads the format of fs_dax:dax_pmd_insert_mapping ("print fmt") from /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/fs_dax/dax_pmd_insert_mapping/format . The format contains: ~(((u64) ~(~(((1UL) << 12)-1))) ^ \ interpreted as a binary operator by process_op(). This part is generated in the declaration of the event class dax_pmd_insert_mapping_class in include/trace/events/fs_dax.h : __print_flags_u64(__entry->pfn_val & PFN_FLAGS_MASK, "|", PFN_FLAGS_TRACE), This patch adds a pair of parentheses in the declaration of PFN_FLAGS_MASK to make sure that '~' is parsed as a unary operator by perf. The part of the format that was problematic is now: ~(((u64) (~(~(((1UL) << 12)-1)))) Now, all the '~' are parsed as unary operators. 2018-06-08mm: introduce ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIALLaurent Dufour1-2/+2
Currently the PTE special supports is turned on in per architecture header files. Most of the time, it is defined in arch/*/include/asm/pgtable.h depending or not on some other per architecture static definition. This patch introduce a new configuration variable to manage this directly in the Kconfig files. It would later replace __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL. Here notes for some architecture where the definition of __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is not obvious: arm __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL which is currently defined in arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable-3level.h which is included by arch/arm/include/asm/pgtable.h when CONFIG_ARM_LPAE is set. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if ARM_LPAE. powerpc __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined in 2 files: - arch/powerpc/include/asm/book3s/64/pgtable.h - arch/powerpc/include/asm/pte-common.h The first one is included if (PPC_BOOK3S & PPC64) while the second is included in all the other cases. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL all the time. sparc: __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SPECIAL is defined if defined(__sparc__) && defined(__arch64__) which are defined through the compiler in sparc/Makefile if !SPARC32 which I assume to be if SPARC64. So select ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL if SPARC64 There is no functional change introduced by this patch. 2018-01-20mm, dax: introduce pfn_t_special()Dan Williams1-0/+13
In support of removing the VM_MIXEDMAP indication from DAX VMAs, introduce pfn_t_special() for drivers to indicate that _PAGE_SPECIAL should be used for DAX ptes. This also helps identify drivers like dccssblk that only want to use DAX in a read-only fashion without get_user_pages() support. Ideally we could delete axonram and dcssblk DAX support, but if we need to keep it better make it explicit that axonram and dcssblk only support a sub-set of DAX due to missing _PAGE_DEVMAP support. 2017-11-02License cleanup: add SPDX GPL-2.0 license identifier to files with no licenseGreg Kroah-Hartman1-0/+1
Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license. By default all files without license information are under the default license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2. Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0' SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text. This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and Philippe Ombredanne. How this work was done: Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of the use cases: - file had no licensing information it it. - file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it, - file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information, Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords. The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files. The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s) to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was: - Files considered eligible had to be source code files. - Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5 lines of source - File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5 lines). All documentation files were explicitly excluded. The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license identifiers to apply. - when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was considered to have no license information in it, and the top level COPYING file license applied. For non */uapi/* files that summary was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 11139 and resulted in the first patch in this series. If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------- GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930 and resulted in the second patch in this series. - if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in it (per prior point). Results summary: SPDX license identifier # files ---------------------------------------------------|------ GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270 GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17 LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15 GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14 ((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5 LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4 LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3 ((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1 and that resulted in the third patch in this series. - when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became the concluded license(s). - when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a license but the other didn't, or they both detected different licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred. - In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics). - When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. - If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier, the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later in time. In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation. Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so they are related. Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks in about 15000 files. In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the correct identifier. Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch version early this week with: - a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected license ids and scores - reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+ files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct - reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the different types of files to be modified. These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to generate the patches. 2017-02-25mm, x86: add support for PUD-sized transparent hugepagesMatthew Wilcox1-0/+12
The current transparent hugepage code only supports PMDs. This patch adds support for transparent use of PUDs with DAX. It does not include support for anonymous pages. x86 support code also added. Most of this patch simply parallels the work that was done for huge PMDs. The only major difference is how the new ->pud_entry method in mm_walk works. The ->pmd_entry method replaces the ->pte_entry method, whereas the ->pud_entry method works along with either ->pmd_entry or ->pte_entry. The pagewalk code takes care of locking the PUD before calling ->pud_walk, so handlers do not need to worry whether the PUD is stable. 2016-06-24libnvdimm, pmem: allow nfit_test to override pmem_direct_access()Dan Williams1-1/+4
Currently phys_to_pfn_t() is an exported symbol to allow nfit_test to override it and indicate that nfit_test-pmem is not device-mapped. Now, we want to enable nfit_test to operate without DMA_CMA and the pmem it provides will no longer be physically contiguous, i.e. won't be capable of supporting direct_access requests larger than a page. Make pmem_direct_access() a weak symbol so that it can be replaced by the tools/testing/nvdimm/ version, and move phys_to_pfn_t() to a static inline now that it no longer needs to be overridden. 2016-02-12mm: fix pfn_t vs highmemDan Williams1-10/+9
The pfn_t type uses an unsigned long to store a pfn + flags value. On a 64-bit platform the upper 12 bits of an unsigned long are never used for storing the value of a pfn. However, this is not true on highmem platforms, all 32-bits of a pfn value are used to address a 44-bit physical address space. A pfn_t needs to store a 64-bit value. 2016-01-16mm, dax, pmem: introduce pfn_tDan Williams1-0/+67
For the purpose of communicating the optional presence of a 'struct page' for the pfn returned from ->direct_access(), introduce a type that encapsulates a page-frame-number plus flags. These flags contain the historical "page_link" encoding for a scatterlist entry, but can also denote "device memory". Where "device memory" is a set of pfns that are not part of the kernel's linear mapping by default, but are accessed via the same memory controller as ram. The motivation for this new type is large capacity persistent memory that needs struct page entries in the 'memmap' to support 3rd party DMA (i.e. O_DIRECT I/O with a persistent memory source/target). However, we also need it in support of maintaining a list of mapped inodes which need to be unmapped at driver teardown or freeze_bdev() time.
