[ Upstream commit 9e47a758b70167c9301d2b44d2569f86c7796f2d ] During NVMeTCP Authentication a controller can trigger a kernel oops by specifying the 8192 bit Diffie Hellman group and passing a correctly sized, but zeroed Diffie Hellamn value. mpi_cmp_ui() was detecting this if the second parameter was 0, but 1 is passed from dh_is_pubkey_valid(). 2023-08-30lib/clz_ctz.c: Fix __clzdi2() and __ctzdi2() for 32-bit kernelsHelge Deller1-26/+6

The gcc compiler translates on some architectures the 64-bit __builtin_clzll() function to a call to the libgcc function __clzdi2(), which should take a 64-bit parameter on 32- and 64-bit platforms. But in the current kernel code, the built-in __clzdi2() function is defined to operate (wrongly) on 32-bit parameters if BITS_PER_LONG == 32, thus the return values on 32-bit kernels are in the range from [0..31] instead of the expected [0..63] range. This patch fixes the in-kernel functions __clzdi2() and __ctzdi2() to take a 64-bit parameter on 32-bit kernels as well, thus it makes the functions identical for 32- and 64-bit kernels. This bug went unnoticed since kernel 3.11 for over 10 years, and here are some possible reasons for that: a) Some architectures have assembly instructions to count the bits and which are used instead of calling __clzdi2(), e.g. on x86 the bsr instruction and on ppc cntlz is used. On such architectures the wrong __clzdi2() implementation isn't used and as such the bug has no effect and won't be noticed. b) Some architectures link to libgcc.a, and the in-kernel weak functions get replaced by the correct 64-bit variants from libgcc.a. c) __builtin_clzll() and __clzdi2() doesn't seem to be used in many places in the kernel, and most likely only in uncritical functions, e.g. when printing hex values via seq_put_hex_ll(). The wrong return value will still print the correct number, but just in a wrong formatting (e.g. with too many leading zeroes). d) 32-bit kernels aren't used that much any longer, so they are less tested. To avoid deadlock on test_fw_mutex, the lock is dropped before calling test_dev_config_update_u8() and re-acquired within test_dev_config_update_u8() itself, but alas this creates a race condition. Having two locks wouldn't assure a race-proof mutual exclusion. This situation is best avoided by the introduction of a new, unlocked function __test_dev_config_update_u8() which can be called from the locked context and reducing test_dev_config_update_u8() to: static int test_dev_config_update_u8(const char *buf, size_t size, u8 *cfg) { int ret; mutex_lock(&test_fw_mutex); ret = __test_dev_config_update_u8(buf, size, cfg); mutex_unlock(&test_fw_mutex); return ret; } doing the locking and calling the unlocked primitive, which enables both locked and unlocked versions without duplication of code. The similar approach was applied to all functions called from the locked and the unlocked context, which safely mitigates both deadlocks and race conditions in the driver. __test_dev_config_update_bool(), __test_dev_config_update_u8() and __test_dev_config_update_size_t() unlocked versions of the functions were introduced to be called from the locked contexts as a workaround without releasing the main driver's lock and thereof causing a race condition. The test_dev_config_update_bool(), test_dev_config_update_u8() and test_dev_config_update_size_t() locked versions of the functions are being called from driver methods without the unnecessary multiplying of the locking and unlocking code for each method, and complicating the code with saving of the return value across lock. In a couple of situations like name = kstrndup(buf, count, GFP_KERNEL); if (!name) return -ENOSPC; the error is not actually "No space left on device", but "Out of memory". It is semantically correct to return -ENOMEM in all failed kstrndup() and kzalloc() cases in this driver, as it is not a problem with disk space, but with kernel memory allocator failing allocation. The same appears with trigger_batched_requests_async_store(). This bug wasn't trigger by the tests, but observed by Dan's visual inspection of the code. The recommended workaround was to return -EBUSY if test_fw_config->reqs is already allocated. [ Upstream commit 6f67fbf8192da80c4db01a1800c7fceaca9cf1f9 ] The `shift` variable which indicates the offset in the string at which to start matching the pattern is initialized to `bm->patlen - 1`, but it is not reset when a new block is retrieved. This means the implemen- tation may start looking at later and later positions in each successive block and miss occurrences of the pattern at the beginning. E.g., consider a HTTP packet held in a non-linear skb, where the HTTP request line occurs in the second block: [... 52 bytes of packet headers ...] GET /bmtest HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: www.example.com\r\n\r\n and the pattern is "GET /bmtest". Once the first block comprising the packet headers has been examined, `shift` will be pointing to somewhere near the end of the block, and so when the second block is examined the request line at the beginning will be missed. Reinitialize the variable for each new block. Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1] (or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings (e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized, either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes. [ Upstream commit 4e0473f1060aa49621d40a113afde24818101d37 ] When calling irq_set_affinity_notifier() with NULL at the notify argument, it will cause freeing of the glue pointer in the corresponding array entry but will leave the pointer in the array. A subsequent call to free_irq_cpu_rmap() will try to free this entry again leading to possible use after free. Fix that by setting NULL to the array entry and checking that we have non-zero at the array entry when iterating over the array in free_irq_cpu_rmap(). The current code does not suffer from this since there are no cases where irq_set_affinity_notifier(irq, NULL) (note the NULL passed for the notify arg) is called, followed by a call to free_irq_cpu_rmap() so we don't hit and issue. Subsequent patches in this series excersize this flow, hence the required fix. commit 0af462f19e635ad522f28981238334620881badc upstream. The recent fix to ensure atomicity of lookup and allocation inadvertently broke the pool refill mechanism. Prior to that change debug_objects_activate() and debug_objecs_assert_init() invoked debug_objecs_init() to set up the tracking object for statically initialized objects. That's not longer the case and debug_objecs_init() is now the only place which does pool refills. Depending on the number of statically initialized objects this can be enough to actually deplete the pool, which was observed by Ido via a debugobjects OOM warning. Restore the old behaviour by adding explicit refill opportunities to debug_objects_activate() and debug_objecs_assert_init(). They are special cased and the subsystem provides a function to validate whether an object which is not yet tracked by debugobjects is statically initialized. This means the object is started to be tracked on first use, e.g. activation. This works perfectly fine, unless there are two concurrent operations on that object. This race exists forever, but was never observed until mod_timer() got a debug_object_assert_init() added which is outside of the timer base lock held section right at the beginning of the function to cover the lockless early exit points too. Rework the code so that the lookup, the static object check and the tracking object association happens atomically under the hash bucket lock. This prevents the issue completely as all callers are serialized on the hash bucket lock and therefore cannot observe inconsistent state. [ Upstream commit d86998b17a01050c0232231fa481e65ef8171ca6 ] When a multi-threaded workload does a lot of small memory object allocations and deallocations, it may cause the allocation and freeing of many debug objects. This will make the global pool_lock a bottleneck in the performance of the workload. Since interrupts are disabled when acquiring the pool_lock, it may even cause hard lockups to happen. To reduce contention of the global pool_lock, add a percpu debug object free pool that can be used to buffer some of the debug object allocation and freeing requests without acquiring the pool_lock. Each CPU will now have a percpu free pool that can hold up to a maximum of 64 debug objects. Allocation and freeing requests will go to the percpu free pool first. If that fails, the pool_lock will be taken and the global free pool will be used. The presence or absence of obj_cache is used as a marker to see if the percpu cache should be used. commit 74e19ef0ff8061ef55957c3abd71614ef0f42f47 upstream. The results of "access_ok()" can be mis-speculated. The result is that you can end speculatively: if (access_ok(from, size)) // Right here even for bad from/size combinations. On first glance, it would be ideal to just add a speculation barrier to "access_ok()" so that its results can never be mis-speculated. But there are lots of system calls just doing access_ok() via "copy_to_user()" and friends (example: fstat() and friends). Those are generally not problematic because they do not _consume_ data from userspace other than the pointer. They are also very quick and common system calls that should not be needlessly slowed down. "copy_from_user()" on the other hand uses a user-controller pointer and is frequently followed up with code that might affect caches. Take something like this: if (!copy_from_user(&kernelvar, uptr, size)) do_something_with(kernelvar); If userspace passes in an evil 'uptr' that *actually* points to a kernel addresses, and then do_something_with() has cache (or other) side-effects, it could allow userspace to infer kernel data values. Add a barrier to the common copy_from_user() code to prevent mis-speculated values which happen after the copy. Also add a stub for architectures that do not define barrier_nospec(). This makes the macro usable in generic code. Since the barrier is now usable in generic code, the x86 #ifdef in the BPF code can also go away. The config to be able to inject error codes into any function annotated with ALLOW_ERROR_INJECTION() is enabled when FUNCTION_ERROR_INJECTION is enabled. But unfortunately, this is always enabled on x86 when KPROBES is enabled, and there's no way to turn it off. As kprobes is useful for observability of the kernel, it is useful to have it enabled in production environments. But error injection should be avoided. Add a prompt to the config to allow it to be disabled even when kprobes is enabled, and get rid of the "def_bool y". This is a kernel debug feature (it's in Kconfig.debug), and should have never been something enabled by default. The cited commit added an overriding module modname, taken from the module loader, which is authoritative. So it set query.module 1st, which disallowed its use in the query-string. This is because __inet_hash_connect() uses get_random_once() to populate a perturbation table which became quite big after commit 4c2c8f03a5ab ("tcp: increase source port perturb table to 2^16") get_random_once() uses DO_ONCE(), which block hard irqs for the duration of the operation. This patch adds DO_ONCE_SLOW() which uses a mutex instead of a spinlock for operations where we prefer to stay in process context. Then __inet_hash_connect() can use get_random_slow_once() to populate its perturbation table. commit fc82bbf4dede758007763867d0282353c06d1121 upstream. This is another old BUG_ON() that just shouldn't exist (see also commit a382f8fee42c: "signal handling: don't use BUG_ON() for debugging"). In fact, as Matthew Wilcox points out, this condition shouldn't really even result in a warning, since a negative id allocation result is just a normal allocation failure: "I wonder if we should even warn here -- sure, the caller is trying to free something that wasn't allocated, but we don't warn for kfree(NULL)" and goes on to point out how that current error check is only causing people to unnecessarily do their own index range checking before freeing it. This was noted by Itay Iellin, because the bluetooth HCI socket cookie code does *not* do that range checking, and ends up just freeing the error case too, triggering the BUG_ON(). The HCI code requires CAP_NET_RAW, and seems to just result in an ugly splat, but there really is no reason to BUG_ON() here, and we have generally striven for allocation models where it's always ok to just do free(alloc()); even if the allocation were to fail for some random reason (usually obviously that "random" reason being some resource limit). commit cc1e127bfa95b5fb2f9307e7168bf8b2b45b4c5e upstream. The CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM debug option controls whether the kernel warns about all unseeded randomness or just the first instance. There's some complicated rate limiting and comparison to the previous caller, such that even with CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM enabled, developers still don't see all the messages or even an accurate count of how many were missed. This is the result of basically parallel mechanisms aimed at accomplishing more or less the same thing, added at different points in random.c history, which sort of compete with the first-instance-only limiting we have now. It turns out, however, that nobody cares about the first unseeded randomness instance of in-kernel users. The same first user has been there for ages now, and nobody is doing anything about it. It isn't even clear that anybody _can_ do anything about it. Most places that can do something about it have switched over to using get_random_bytes_wait() or wait_for_random_bytes(), which is the right thing to do, but there is still much code that needs randomness sometimes during init, and as a geeneral rule, if you're not using one of the _wait functions or the readiness notifier callback, you're bound to be doing it wrong just based on that fact alone. So warning about this same first user that can't easily change is simply not an effective mechanism for anything at all. Users can't do anything about it, as the Kconfig text points out -- the problem isn't in userspace code -- and kernel developers don't or more often can't react to it. Instead, show the warning for all instances when CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM is set, so that developers can debug things need be, or if it isn't set, don't show a warning at all. At the same time, CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM now implies setting random.ratelimit_disable=1 on by default, since if you care about one you probably care about the other too. And we can clean up usage around the related urandom_warning ratelimiter as well (whose behavior isn't changing), so that it properly counts missed messages after the 10 message threshold is reached. The SipHash family of permutations is currently used in three places: - siphash.c itself, used in the ordinary way it was intended. - random32.c, in a construction from an anonymous contributor. - random.c, as part of its fast_mix function. Each one of these places reinvents the wheel with the same C code, same rotation constants, and same symmetry-breaking constants. This commit tidies things up a bit by placing macros for the permutations and constants into siphash.h, where each of the three .c users can access them. Replace this with a more standard atomic notifier block that serves the same purpose with less code. Also unexport the symbols, because no modules use it, only unconditional builtins. The only drawback is that it's possible for a notification handler returning the "stop" code to prevent further processing, but given that there are only two users, and that we're unexporting this anyway, that doesn't seem like a significant drawback for the simplification we receive here. But unfortunately for historical reasons, Noise, used by WireGuard, uses HKDF quite strictly, which means we have to use this. Because this really shouldn't be used by others, this commit moves it into wireguard's noise.c locally, so that kernels that aren't using WireGuard don't get this superfluous code baked in. On m68k systems, this shaves off ~314 bytes. The invariant for compression in this function is: whenever nr_leaves_on_branch < ASSOC_ARRAY_FAN_OUT, the node should contain all leaf nodes. The compression step currently cannot guarantee this, given the corner case shown above. To fix this issue, retry compression whenever we have retained a node, and yet nr_leaves_on_branch < ASSOC_ARRAY_FAN_OUT. This second compression will then allow the node in slot 1 to be folded in, satisfying the invariant. If we pass too short string to "hex2bin" (and the string size without the terminating NUL character is even), "hex2bin" reads one byte after the terminating NUL character. This patch fixes it. Note that hex_to_bin returns -1 on error and hex2bin return -EINVAL on error - so we can't just return the variable "hi" or "lo" on error. This inconsistency may be fixed in the next merge window, but for the purpose of fixing this bug, we just preserve the existing behavior and return -1 and -EINVAL. commit e5be15767e7e284351853cbaba80cde8620341fb upstream. The function hex2bin is used to load cryptographic keys into device mapper targets dm-crypt and dm-integrity. It should take constant time independent on the processed data, so that concurrently running unprivileged code can't infer any information about the keys via microarchitectural convert channels. This patch changes the function hex_to_bin so that it contains no branches and no memory accesses. Note that this shouldn't cause performance degradation because the size of the new function is the same as the size of the old function (on x86-64) - and the new function causes no branch misprediction penalties. I compile-tested this function with gcc on aarch64 alpha arm hppa hppa64 i386 ia64 m68k mips32 mips64 powerpc powerpc64 riscv sh4 s390x sparc32 sparc64 x86_64 and with clang on aarch64 arm hexagon i386 mips32 mips64 powerpc powerpc64 s390x sparc32 sparc64 x86_64 to verify that there are no branches in the generated code. GCC 10+ defaults to -fno-common, which enforces proper declaration of external references using "extern". without this change a link would fail with: lib/raid6/test/algos.c:28: multiple definition of `raid6_call'; lib/raid6/test/test.c:22: first defined here the pq.h header that is included already includes an extern declaration so we can just remove the redundant one here. [ Upstream commit 11c57c3ba94da74c3446924260e34e0b1950b5d7 ] Resending this to properly add it to the patch tracker - thanks for letting me know, Arnd :) When ARM is enabled, and BITREVERSE is disabled, Kbuild gives the following warning: WARNING: unmet direct dependencies detected for HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE Depends on [n]: BITREVERSE [=n] Selected by [y]: - ARM [=y] && (CPU_32v7M [=n] || CPU_32v7 [=y]) && !CPU_32v6 [=n] This is because ARM selects HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE without selecting BITREVERSE, despite HAVE_ARCH_BITREVERSE depending on BITREVERSE. This unmet dependency bug was found by Kismet, a static analysis tool for Kconfig. Please advise if this is not the appropriate solution.
