2018-10-23Revert "net: simplify sock_poll_wait"Karsten Graul1-1/+1
This reverts commit dd979b4df817e9976f18fb6f9d134d6bc4a3c317. This broke tcp_poll for SMC fallback: An AF_SMC socket establishes an internal TCP socket for the initial handshake with the remote peer. Whenever the SMC connection can not be established this TCP socket is used as a fallback. All socket operations on the SMC socket are then forwarded to the TCP socket. In case of poll, the file->private_data pointer references the SMC socket because the TCP socket has no file assigned. This causes tcp_poll to wait on the wrong socket. 2018-06-28Revert changes to convert to ->poll_mask() and aio IOCB_CMD_POLLLinus Torvalds1-4/+8
The poll() changes were not well thought out, and completely unexplained. They also caused a huge performance regression, because "->poll()" was no longer a trivial file operation that just called down to the underlying file operations, but instead did at least two indirect calls. Indirect calls are sadly slow now with the Spectre mitigation, but the performance problem could at least be largely mitigated by changing the "->get_poll_head()" operation to just have a per-file-descriptor pointer to the poll head instead. That gets rid of one of the new indirections. But that doesn't fix the new complexity that is completely unwarranted for the regular case. The (undocumented) reason for the poll() changes was some alleged AIO poll race fixing, but we don't make the common case slower and more complex for some uncommon special case, so this all really needs way more explanations and most likely a fundamental redesign. 2018-02-12vfs: do bulk POLL* -> EPOLL* replacementLinus Torvalds1-6/+6
This is the mindless scripted replacement of kernel use of POLL* variables as described by Al, done by this script: for V in IN OUT PRI ERR RDNORM RDBAND WRNORM WRBAND HUP RDHUP NVAL MSG; do L=`git grep -l -w POLL$V | grep -v '^t' | grep -v /um/ | grep -v '^sa' | grep -v '/poll.h$'|grep -v '^D'` for f in $L; do sed -i "-es/^\([^\"]*\)\(\<POLL$V\>\)/\\1E\\2/" $f; done done with de-mangling cleanups yet to come. NOTE! On almost all architectures, the EPOLL* constants have the same values as the POLL* constants do. But they keyword here is "almost". For various bad reasons they aren't the same, and epoll() doesn't actually work quite correctly in some cases due to this on Sparc et al. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux Pull hardened usercopy whitelisting from Kees Cook: "Currently, hardened usercopy performs dynamic bounds checking on slab cache objects. This is good, but still leaves a lot of kernel memory available to be copied to/from userspace in the face of bugs. To further restrict what memory is available for copying, this creates a way to whitelist specific areas of a given slab cache object for copying to/from userspace, allowing much finer granularity of access control. Slab caches that are never exposed to userspace can declare no whitelist for their objects, thereby keeping them unavailable to userspace via dynamic copy operations. (Note, an implicit form of whitelisting is the use of constant sizes in usercopy operations and get_user()/put_user(); these bypass all hardened usercopy checks since these sizes cannot change at runtime.) This new check is WARN-by-default, so any mistakes can be found over the next several releases without breaking anyone's system. The series has roughly the following sections: - remove %p and improve reporting with offset - prepare infrastructure and whitelist kmalloc - update VFS subsystem with whitelists - update SCSI subsystem with whitelists - update network subsystem with whitelists - update process memory with whitelists - update per-architecture thread_struct with whitelists - update KVM with whitelists and fix ioctl bug - mark all other allocations as not whitelisted - update lkdtm for more sensible test overage" * tag 'usercopy-v4.16-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kees/linux: (38 commits) lkdtm: Update usercopy tests for whitelisting usercopy: Restrict non-usercopy caches to size 0 kvm: x86: fix KVM_XEN_HVM_CONFIG ioctl kvm: whitelist struct kvm_vcpu_arch arm: Implement thread_struct whitelist for hardened usercopy arm64: Implement thread_struct whitelist for hardened usercopy x86: Implement thread_struct whitelist for hardened usercopy fork: Provide usercopy whitelisting for task_struct fork: Define usercopy region in thread_stack slab caches fork: Define usercopy region in mm_struct slab caches net: Restrict unwhitelisted proto caches to size 0 sctp: Copy struct sctp_sock.autoclose to userspace using put_user() sctp: Define usercopy region in SCTP proto slab cache caif: Define usercopy region in caif proto slab cache ip: Define usercopy region in IP proto slab cache net: Define usercopy region in struct proto slab cache scsi: Define usercopy region in scsi_sense_cache slab cache cifs: Define usercopy region in cifs_request slab cache vxfs: Define usercopy region in vxfs_inode slab cache ufs: Define usercopy region in ufs_inode_cache slab cache ...
2018-01-15caif: Define usercopy region in caif proto slab cacheDavid Windsor1-0/+2
The CAIF channel connection request parameters need to be copied to/from userspace. In support of usercopy hardening, this patch defines a region in the struct proto slab cache in which userspace copy operations are allowed. example usage trace: net/caif/caif_socket.c: setsockopt(...): ... copy_from_user(&cf_sk->conn_req.param.data, ..., ol) This region is known as the slab cache's usercopy region. Slab caches can now check that each dynamically sized copy operation involving cache-managed memory falls entirely within the slab's usercopy region. This patch is modified from Brad Spengler/PaX Team's PAX_USERCOPY whitelisting code in the last public patch of grsecurity/PaX based on my understanding of the code. Conflicts: drivers/net/ethernet/emulex/benet/be_main.c net/core/sysctl_net_core.c net/ipv4/inet_diag.c The be_main.c conflict resolution was really tricky. The conflict hunks generated by GIT were very unhelpful, to say the least. It split functions in half and moved them around, when the real actual conflict only existed solely inside of one function, that being be_map_pci_bars(). So instead, to resolve this, I checked out be_main.c from the top of net-next, then I applied the be_main.c changes from 'net' since the last time I merged. And this worked beautifully. 2014-04-12net: Fix use after free by removing length arg from sk_data_ready callbacks.David S. Miller1-3/+1
Several spots in the kernel perform a sequence like: skb_queue_tail(&sk->s_receive_queue, skb); sk->sk_data_ready(sk, skb->len); But at the moment we place the SKB onto the socket receive queue it can be consumed and freed up. So this skb->len access is potentially to freed up memory. Furthermore, the skb->len can be modified by the consumer so it is possible that the value isn't accurate. And finally, no actual implementation of this callback actually uses the length argument. And since nobody actually cared about it's value, lots of call sites pass arbitrary values in such as '0' and even '1'. So just remove the length argument from the callback, that way there is no confusion whatsoever and all of these use-after-free cases get fixed as a side effect. 2013-11-21net: rework recvmsg handler msg_name and msg_namelen logicHannes Frederic Sowa1-4/+0
This patch now always passes msg->msg_namelen as 0. recvmsg handlers must set msg_namelen to the proper size <= sizeof(struct sockaddr_storage) to return msg_name to the user. This prevents numerous uninitialized memory leaks we had in the recvmsg handlers and makes it harder for new code to accidentally leak uninitialized memory. Optimize for the case recvfrom is called with NULL as address. We don't need to copy the address at all, so set it to NULL before invoking the recvmsg handler. We can do so, because all the recvmsg handlers must cope with the case a plain read() is called on them. read() also sets msg_name to NULL. Also document these changes in include/linux/net.h as suggested by David Miller. Changes since RFC: Set msg->msg_name = NULL if user specified a NULL in msg_name but had a non-null msg_namelen in verify_iovec/verify_compat_iovec. This doesn't affect sendto as it would bail out earlier while trying to copy-in the address. It also more naturally reflects the logic by the callers of verify_iovec. With this change in place I could remove " if (!uaddr || msg_sys->msg_namelen == 0) msg->msg_name = NULL ". This change does not alter the user visible error logic as we ignore msg_namelen as long as msg_name is NULL. Also remove two unnecessary curly brackets in ___sys_recvmsg and change comments to netdev style. 2012-08-01netvm: prevent a stream-specific deadlockMel Gorman1-1/+1
This patch series is based on top of "Swap-over-NBD without deadlocking v15" as it depends on the same reservation of PF_MEMALLOC reserves logic. When a user or administrator requires swap for their application, they create a swap partition and file, format it with mkswap and activate it with swapon. In diskless systems this is not an option so if swap if required then swapping over the network is considered. The two likely scenarios are when blade servers are used as part of a cluster where the form factor or maintenance costs do not allow the use of disks and thin clients. The Linux Terminal Server Project recommends the use of the Network Block Device (NBD) for swap but this is not always an option. There is no guarantee that the network attached storage (NAS) device is running Linux or supports NBD. However, it is likely that it supports NFS so there are users that want support for swapping over NFS despite any performance concern. Some distributions currently carry patches that support swapping over NFS but it would be preferable to support it in the mainline kernel. Patch 1 avoids a stream-specific deadlock that potentially affects TCP. Patch 2 is a small modification to SELinux to avoid using PFMEMALLOC reserves. Patch 3 adds three helpers for filesystems to handle swap cache pages. For example, page_file_mapping() returns page->mapping for file-backed pages and the address_space of the underlying swap file for swap cache pages. Patch 4 adds two address_space_operations to allow a filesystem to pin all metadata relevant to a swapfile in memory. Upon successful activation, the swapfile is marked SWP_FILE and the address space operation ->direct_IO is used for writing and ->readpage for reading in swap pages. Patch 5 notes that patch 3 is bolting filesystem-specific-swapfile-support onto the side and that the default handlers have different information to what is available to the filesystem. This patch refactors the code so that there are generic handlers for each of the new address_space operations. Patch 6 adds an API to allow a vector of kernel addresses to be translated to struct pages and pinned for IO. Patch 7 adds support for using highmem pages for swap by kmapping the pages before calling the direct_IO handler. Patch 8 updates NFS to use the helpers from patch 3 where necessary. Patch 9 avoids setting PF_private on PG_swapcache pages within NFS. Patch 10 implements the new swapfile-related address_space operations for NFS and teaches the direct IO handler how to manage kernel addresses. Patch 11 prevents page allocator recursions in NFS by using GFP_NOIO where appropriate. Patch 12 fixes a NULL pointer dereference that occurs when using swap-over-NFS. With the patches applied, it is possible to mount a swapfile that is on an NFS filesystem. Swap performance is not great with a swap stress test taking roughly twice as long to complete than if the swap device was backed by NBD. This patch: netvm: prevent a stream-specific deadlock It could happen that all !SOCK_MEMALLOC sockets have buffered so much data that we're over the global rmem limit. This will prevent SOCK_MEMALLOC buffers from receiving data, which will prevent userspace from running, which is needed to reduce the buffered data. Fix this by exempting the SOCK_MEMALLOC sockets from the rmem limit. Once this change it applied, it is important that sockets that set SOCK_MEMALLOC do not clear the flag until the socket is being torn down. If this happens, a warning is generated and the tokens reclaimed to avoid accounting errors until the bug is fixed. 2012-02-02caif: Bugfix double kfree_skb upon xmit failureDmitry Tarnyagin1-4/+6
SKB is freed twice upon send error. The Network stack consumes SKB even when it returns error code. Signed-off-by: Sjur Brændeland <sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-05-23caif: Fixes freeze on Link layer removal.sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com1-8/+5
CAIF Socket layer - caif_socket.c: - Plug mem-leak at reconnect. - Always call disconnect to cleanup CAIF stack. - Disconnect will always report success. CAIF configuration layer - cfcnfg.c - Disconnect must dismantle the caif stack correctly - Protect against faulty removals (check on id zero) CAIF mux layer - cfmuxl.c - When inserting new service layer in the MUX remove any old entries with the same ID. - When removing CAIF Link layer, remove the associated service layers before notifying service layers. 2011-05-16caif: Bugfix debugfs directory name must be unique.sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com1-12/+22
Race condition caused debugfs_create_dir() to fail due to duplicate name. Use atomic counter to create unique directory name. net_ratelimit() is introduced to limit debug printouts. Signed-off-by: Sjur Brændeland <sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-05-16caif: Handle dev_queue_xmit errors.sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com1-3/+5
Do proper handling of dev_queue_xmit errors in order to avoid double free of skb and leaks in error conditions. In cfctrl pending requests are removed when CAIF Link layer goes down. Signed-off-by: Sjur Brændeland <sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
2011-05-16caif: prepare support for namespacessjur.brandeland@stericsson.com1-3/+3
Use struct net to reference CAIF configuration object instead of static variables. Refactor functions caif_connect_client, caif_disconnect_client and squach files cfcnfg.c and caif_config_utils. 2011-05-16caif: Protected in-flight packets using dev or sock refcont.sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com1-2/+17
CAIF Socket Layer and ip-interface registers reference counters in CAIF service layer. The functions sock_hold, sock_put and dev_hold, dev_put are used by CAIF Stack to protect from freeing memory while packets are in-flight. 2011-04-12caif: Don't resend if dev_queue_xmit fails.Sjur Brændeland1-32/+3
If CAIF Link Layer returns an error, we no longer try to re-build the CAIF packet and resend it. Instead, we simply return any transmission errors to the socket client. Signed-off-by: Sjur Brændeland <sjur.brandeland@stericsson.com> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
