2012-03-31uprobes/core: Optimize probe hits with the help of a counterSrikar Dronamraju4-9/+128
Maintain a per-mm counter: number of uprobes that are inserted on this process address space. This counter can be used at probe hit time to determine if we need a lookup in the uprobes rbtree. Everytime a probe gets inserted successfully, the probe count is incremented and everytime a probe gets removed, the probe count is decremented. The new uprobe_munmap hook ensures the count is correct on a unmap or remap of a region. We expect that once a uprobe_munmap() is called, the vma goes away. So uprobe_unregister() finding a probe to unregister would either mean unmap event hasnt occurred yet or a mmap event on the same executable file occured after a unmap event. Additionally, uprobe_mmap hook now also gets called: a. on every executable vma that is COWed at fork. b. a vma of interest is newly mapped; breakpoint insertion also happens at the required address. On process creation, make sure the probes count in the child is set correctly. Special cases that are taken care include: a. mremap b. VM_DONTCOPY vmas on fork() c. insertion/removal races in the parent during fork(). 2012-03-31uprobes/core: Allocate XOL slots for uprobes useSrikar Dronamraju4-0/+253
Uprobes executes the original instruction at a probed location out of line. For this, we allocate a page (per mm) upon the first uprobe hit, in the process user address space, divide it into slots that are used to store the actual instructions to be singlestepped. These slots are known as xol (execution out of line) slots. Care is taken to ensure that the allocation is in an unmapped area as close to the top of the user address space as possible, with appropriate permission settings to keep selinux like frameworks happy. Upon a uprobe hit, a free slot is acquired, and is released after the singlestep completes. Lots of improvements courtesy suggestions/inputs from Peter and Oleg. 2012-03-14uprobes/core: Handle breakpoint and singlestep exceptionsSrikar Dronamraju9-15/+664
Uprobes uses exception notifiers to get to know if a thread hit a breakpoint or a singlestep exception. When a thread hits a uprobe or is singlestepping post a uprobe hit, the uprobe exception notifier sets its TIF_UPROBE bit, which will then be checked on its return to userspace path (do_notify_resume() ->uprobe_notify_resume()), where the consumers handlers are run (in task context) based on the defined filters. Uprobe hits are thread specific and hence we need to maintain information about if a task hit a uprobe, what uprobe was hit, the slot where the original instruction was copied for xol so that it can be singlestepped with appropriate fixups. In some cases, special care is needed for instructions that are executed out of line (xol). These are architecture specific artefacts, such as handling RIP relative instructions on x86_64. Since the instruction at which the uprobe was inserted is executed out of line, architecture specific fixups are added so that the thread continues normal execution in the presence of a uprobe. Postpone the signals until we execute the probed insn. post_xol() path does a recalc_sigpending() before return to user-mode, this ensures the signal can't be lost. Uprobes relies on DIE_DEBUG notification to notify if a singlestep is complete. Adds x86 specific uprobe exception notifiers and appropriate hooks needed to determine a uprobe hit and subsequent post processing. Add requisite x86 fixups for xol for uprobes. Specific cases needing fixups include relative jumps (x86_64), calls, etc. Where possible, we check and skip singlestepping the breakpointed instructions. For now we skip single byte as well as few multibyte nop instructions. However this can be extended to other instructions too. 2012-03-06x32: Add ptrace for x32H.J. Lu2-2/+101
X32 ptrace is a hybrid of 64bit ptrace and compat ptrace with 32bit address and longs. It use 64bit ptrace to access the full 64bit registers. PTRACE_PEEKUSR and PTRACE_POKEUSR are only allowed to access segment and debug registers. PTRACE_PEEKUSR returns the lower 32bits and PTRACE_POKEUSR zero-extends 32bit value to 64bit. It works since the upper 32bits of segment and debug registers of x32 process are always zero. GDB only uses PTRACE_PEEKUSR and PTRACE_POKEUSR to access segment and debug registers. 2012-03-06x32: Switch to a 64-bit clock_tH. Peter Anvin3-4/+19
clock_t is used mainly to give the number of jiffies a certain process has burned. It is entirely feasible for a long-running process to consume more than 2^32 jiffies especially in a multiprocess system. As such, switch to a 64-bit clock_t for x32, just as we already switched to a 64-bit time_t. clock_t is only used in a handful of places, and as such it is really not a very significant change. The one that has the biggest impact is in struct siginfo, but since the *size* of struct siginfo doesn't change (it is padded to the hilt) it is fairly easy to make this a localized change. This also gets rid of sys_x32_times, however since this is a pretty late change don't compactify the system call numbers; we can reuse system call slot 521 next time we need an x32 system call. 2012-03-03vfs: split up name hashing in link_path_walk() into helper functionLinus Torvalds1-18/+34
The code in link_path_walk() that finds out the length and the hash of the next path component is some of the hottest code in the kernel. And I have a version of it that does things at the full width of the CPU wordsize at a time, but that means that we *really* want to split it up into a separate helper function. So this re-organizes the code a bit and splits the hashing part into a helper function called "hash_name()". It returns the length of the pathname component, while at the same time computing and writing the hash to the appropriate location. The code generation is slightly changed by this patch, but generally for the better - and the added abstraction actually makes the code easier to read too. But it wouldn't matter if it wasn't for the fact that the word-at-a-time dentry name patches want to conditionally replace the function, and uninlining it sets the stage for that. So again, this is a preparatory patch that doesn't change any semantics, and only prepares for a much cleaner and testable word-at-a-time dentry name accessor patch. The F75387 supports automatic fan control using either PWM duty cycle or RPM speed values. Make the driver detect the latter mode, and expose the different modes in sysfs as per pwm_enable, so that the user can switch between them. The interpretation of the pwm_enable attribute for the F75387 is adjusted to be a superset of those values used for similar Fintek chips which do not support automatic duty mode, with 2 mapping to automatic speed mode, and moving automatic duty mode to the new value 4. Toggling the duty mode via pwm_enable is currently denied for the F75387, as the chip then simply reinterprets the fan configuration register values according to the new mode, switching between RPM and PWM units, which makes this a dangerous operation. This patch introduces a new pwm mode into the driver. This is necessary because the new mode (automatic pwm mode, 4) may already be enabled by the BIOS, and the driver should not break existing functionality. This was seen on at least one board. It turned out that a performance counter on AMD does not count at all when the GO or HO bit is set in the control register and SVM is disabled in EFER. This patch works around this issue by masking out the HO bit in the performance counter control register when SVM is not enabled. The GO bit is not touched because it is only set when the user wants to count in guest-mode only. So when SVM is disabled the counter should not run at all and the not-counting is the intended behaviour. memblock allocator aligns @size to @align to reduce the amount of fragmentation. Commit: 7bd0b0f0da ("memblock: Reimplement memblock allocation using reverse free area iterator") Broke it by incorrectly relocating @size aligning to memblock_find_in_range_node(). As the aligned size is not propagated back to memblock_alloc_base_nid(), the actually reserved size isn't aligned. While this increases memory use for memblock reserved array, this shouldn't cause any critical failure; however, it seems that the size aligning was hiding a use-beyond-allocation bug in sparc64 and losing the aligning causes boot failure. The underlying problem is currently being debugged but this is a proper fix in itself, it's already pretty late in -rc cycle for boot failures and reverting the change for debugging isn't difficult. commit e562966dbaf49e7804097cd991e5d3a8934fc148 added support for S4 to the balloon driver. The freeze function did nothing to free the pages, since reclaiming the pages from the host to immediately give them back (if S4 was successful) seemed wasteful. Also, if S4 wasn't successful, the guest would have to re-fill the balloon. On restore, the pages were supposed to be marked freed and the free page counters were incremented to reflect the balloon was totally deflated. However, this wasn't done right. The pages that were earlier taken away from the guest during a balloon inflation operation were just shown as used pages after a successful restore from S4. Just a fancy way of leaking lots of memory. Instead of trying that, just leak the balloon on freeze and fill it on restore/thaw paths. This works properly now. ovl->enable/disable are meant to be synchronous so that they can handle the configuration of fifo sizes. The current kernel doesn't configure fifo sizes yet, and so the code doesn't need to block to function (from omapdss driver's perspective). However, for the users of omapdss a non-blocking ovl->disable is confusing, because they don't know when the memory area is not used any more. Furthermore, when the fifo size configuration is added in the next merge window, the change from non-blocking to blocking could cause side effects to the users of omapdss. So by making the functions block already will keep them behaving in the same manner.
