git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: - Rework of the kprobe/uprobe and synthetic events to consolidate all the dynamic event code. This will make changes in the future easier. - Partial rewrite of the function graph tracing infrastructure. This will allow for multiple users of hooking onto functions to get the callback (return) of the function. This is the ground work for having kprobes and function graph tracer using one code base. - Clean up of the histogram code that will facilitate adding more features to the histograms in the future. - Addition of str_has_prefix() and a few use cases. There currently is a similar function strstart() that is used in a few places, but only returns a bool and not a length. These instances will be removed in the future to use str_has_prefix() instead. - A few other various clean ups as well. * tag 'trace-v4.21' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (57 commits) tracing: Use the return of str_has_prefix() to remove open coded numbers tracing: Have the historgram use the result of str_has_prefix() for len of prefix tracing: Use str_has_prefix() instead of using fixed sizes tracing: Use str_has_prefix() helper for histogram code string.h: Add str_has_prefix() helper function tracing: Make function ‘ftrace_exports’ static tracing: Simplify printf'ing in seq_print_sym tracing: Avoid -Wformat-nonliteral warning tracing: Merge seq_print_sym_short() and seq_print_sym_offset() tracing: Add hist trigger comments for variable-related fields tracing: Remove hist trigger synth_var_refs tracing: Use hist trigger's var_ref array to destroy var_refs tracing: Remove open-coding of hist trigger var_ref management tracing: Use var_refs[] for hist trigger reference checking tracing: Change strlen to sizeof for hist trigger static strings tracing: Remove unnecessary hist trigger struct field tracing: Fix ftrace_graph_get_ret_stack() to use task and not current seq_buf: Use size_t for len in seq_buf_puts() seq_buf: Make seq_buf_puts() null-terminate the buffer arm64: Use ftrace_graph_get_ret_stack() instead of curr_ret_stack ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt: "The biggest change here is the updates to kprobes Back in January I posted patches to create function based events. These were the events that you suggested I make to allow developers to easily create events in code where no trace event exists. After posting those changes for review, it was suggested that we implement this instead with kprobes. The problem with kprobes is that the interface is too complex and needs to be simplified. Masami Hiramatsu posted patches in March and I've been playing with them a bit. There's been a bit of clean up in the kprobe code that was inspired by the function based event patches, and a couple of enhancements to the kprobe event interface. - If the arch supports it (we added support for x86), you can place a kprobe event at the start of a function and use $arg1, $arg2, etc to reference the arguments of a function. (Before you needed to know what register or where on the stack the argument was). - The second is a way to see array of events. For example, if you reference a mac address, you can add: echo 'p:mac ip_rcv perm_addr=+574($arg2):x8[6]' > kprobe_events And this will produce: mac: (ip_rcv+0x0/0x140) perm_addr={0x52,0x54,0x0,0xc0,0x76,0xec} Other changes include - Exporting trace_dump_stack to modules - Have the stack tracer trace the entire stack (stop trying to remove tracing itself, as we keep removing too much). - Added support for SDT in uprobes" [ SDT - "Statically Defined Tracing" are userspace markers for tracing. Let's not use random TLA's in explanations unless they are fairly well-established as generic (at least for kernel people) - Linus ] * tag 'trace-v4.20' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace: (24 commits) tracing: Have stack tracer trace full stack tracing: Export trace_dump_stack to modules tracing: probeevent: Fix uninitialized used of offset in parse args tracing/kprobes: Allow kprobe-events to record module symbol tracing/kprobes: Check the probe on unloaded module correctly tracing/uprobes: Fix to return -EFAULT if copy_from_user failed tracing: probeevent: Add $argN for accessing function args x86: ptrace: Add function argument access API tracing: probeevent: Add array type support tracing: probeevent: Add symbol type tracing: probeevent: Unify fetch_insn processing common part tracing: probeevent: Append traceprobe_ for exported function tracing: probeevent: Return consumed bytes of dynamic area tracing: probeevent: Unify fetch type tables tracing: probeevent: Introduce new argument fetching code tracing: probeevent: Remove NOKPROBE_SYMBOL from print functions tracing: probeevent: Cleanup argument field definition tracing: probeevent: Cleanup print argument functions trace_uprobe: support reference counter in fd-based uprobe perf probe: Support SDT markers having reference counter (semaphore) ...

2018-10-11tracing: probeevent: Add $argN for accessing function argsMasami Hiramatsu1-4/+6
Add $argN special fetch variable for accessing function arguments. This allows user to trace the Nth argument easily at the function entry. Note that this returns most probably assignment of registers and stacks. In some case, it may not work well. If you need to access correct registers or stacks you should use perf-probe. 2018-10-11tracing: probeevent: Add array type supportMasami Hiramatsu1-0/+11
Add array type support for probe events. This allows user to get arraied types from memory address. The array type syntax is TYPE[N] Where TYPE is one of types (u8/16/32/64,s8/16/32/64, x8/16/32/64, symbol, string) and N is a fixed value less than 64. The string array type is a bit different from other types. For other base types, <base-type>[1] is equal to <base-type> (e.g. +0(%di):x32[1] is same as +0(%di):x32.) But string[1] is not equal to string. The string type itself represents "char array", but string array type represents "char * array". So, for example, +0(%di):string[1] is equal to +0(+0(%di)):string. 2018-05-14coresight: Remove %px for printing pcsr valueLeo Yan1-2/+2
The driver prints pcsr twice: the first time it uses specifier %px to print hexadecimal pcsr value and the second time uses specifier %pS for output kernel symbols. As suggested by Kees, using %pS should be sufficient and %px isn't necessary; the reason is if the pcsr is a kernel space address, we can easily get to know the code line from %pS format, on the other hand, if the pcsr value doesn't fall into kernel space range (e.g. if the CPU is stuck in firmware), %pS also gives out pcsr hexadecimal value. So this commit removes useless %px and update section "Output format" in the document for alignment between the code and document. 2018-04-26Revert: Unify CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_BOOTTIMEThomas Gleixner1-3/+11
Revert commits 92af4dcb4e1c ("tracing: Unify the "boot" and "mono" tracing clocks") 127bfa5f4342 ("hrtimer: Unify MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME clock behavior") 7250a4047aa6 ("posix-timers: Unify MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME clock behavior") d6c7270e913d ("timekeeping: Remove boot time specific code") f2d6fdbfd238 ("Input: Evdev - unify MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME clock behavior") d6ed449afdb3 ("timekeeping: Make the MONOTONIC clock behave like the BOOTTIME clock") 72199320d49d ("timekeeping: Add the new CLOCK_MONOTONIC_ACTIVE clock") As stated in the pull request for the unification of CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_BOOTTIME, it was clear that we might have to revert the change. As reported by several folks systemd and other applications rely on the documented behaviour of CLOCK_MONOTONIC on Linux and break with the above changes. After resume daemons time out and other timeout related issues are observed. Rafael compiled this list: * systemd kills daemons on resume, after >WatchdogSec seconds of suspending (Genki Sky). [Verified that that's because systemd uses CLOCK_MONOTONIC and expects it to not include the suspend time.] * systemd-journald misbehaves after resume: systemd-journald[7266]: File /var/log/journal/016627c3c4784cd4812d4b7e96a34226/system.journal corrupted or uncleanly shut down, renaming and replacing. (Mike Galbraith). * NetworkManager reports "networking disabled" and networking is broken after resume 50% of the time (Pavel). [May be because of systemd.] * MATE desktop dims the display and starts the screensaver right after system resume (Pavel). * Full system hang during resume (me). [May be due to systemd or NM or both.] That happens on debian and open suse systems. It's sad, that these problems were neither catched in -next nor by those folks who expressed interest in this change. Reported-by: Rafael J. 2018-04-06mm, page_alloc: wakeup kcompactd even if kswapd cannot free more memoryDavid Rientjes1-2/+2
Kswapd will not wakeup if per-zone watermarks are not failing or if too many previous attempts at background reclaim have failed. This can be true if there is a lot of free memory available. For high- order allocations, kswapd is responsible for waking up kcompactd for background compaction. If the zone is not below its watermarks or reclaim has recently failed (lots of free memory, nothing left to reclaim), kcompactd does not get woken up. When __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM is not allowed, allow kcompactd to still be woken up even if kswapd will not reclaim. This allows high-order allocations, such as thp, to still trigger background compaction even when the zone has an abundance of free memory. 2018-03-11tracing: Add 'last error' error facility for hist triggersTom Zanussi1-0/+20
With the addition of variables and actions, it's become necessary to provide more detailed error information to users about syntax errors. Add a 'last error' facility accessible via the erroring event's 'hist' file. Reading the hist file after an error will display more detailed information about what went wrong, if information is available. This extended error information will be available until the next hist trigger command for that event. # echo xxx > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/sched/sched_wakeup/trigger echo: write error: Invalid argument # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/sched/sched_wakeup/hist ERROR: Couldn't yyy: zzz Last command: xxx Also add specific error messages for variable and action errors. 2018-03-11tracing: Add cpu field for hist triggersTom Zanussi1-0/+15

2018-03-11tracing: Add usecs modifier for hist trigger timestampsTom Zanussi1-0/+1
Appending .usecs onto a common_timestamp field will cause the timestamp value to be in microseconds instead of the default nanoseconds. A typical latency histogram using usecs would look like this: # echo 'hist:keys=pid,prio:ts0=common_timestamp.usecs ... # echo 'hist:keys=next_pid:wakeup_lat=common_timestamp.usecs-$ts0 ... This also adds an external trace_clock_in_ns() to trace.c for the timestamp conversion. 2018-03-11tracing: Add timestamp_mode trace fileTom Zanussi1-0/+24
Add a new option flag indicating whether or not the ring buffer is in 'absolute timestamp' mode. Currently this is only set/unset by hist triggers that make use of a common_timestamp. As such, there's no reason to make this writeable for users - its purpose is only to allow users to determine unequivocally whether or not the ring buffer is in that mode (although absolute timestamps can coexist with the normal delta timestamps, when the ring buffer is in absolute mode, timestamps written while absolute mode is in effect take up more space in the buffer, and are not as efficient).
