2020-06-09mm: consolidate pte_index() and pte_offset_*() definitionsMike Rapoport1-14/+4
All architectures define pte_index() as (address >> PAGE_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PTE - 1) and all architectures define pte_offset_kernel() as an entry in the array of PTEs indexed by the pte_index(). For the most architectures the pte_offset_kernel() implementation relies on the availability of pmd_page_vaddr() that converts a PMD entry value to the virtual address of the page containing PTEs array. Let's move x86 definitions of the PTE accessors to the generic place in <linux/pgtable.h> and then simply drop the respective definitions from the other architectures. The architectures that didn't provide pmd_page_vaddr() are updated to have that defined. The generic implementation of pte_offset_kernel() can be overridden by an architecture and alpha makes use of this because it has special ordering requirements for its version of pte_offset_kernel(). 2020-06-09mm: don't include asm/pgtable.h if linux/mm.h is already includedMike Rapoport2-2/+0
Patch series "mm: consolidate definitions of page table accessors", v2. The low level page table accessors (pXY_index(), pXY_offset()) are duplicated across all architectures and sometimes more than once. For instance, we have 31 definition of pgd_offset() for 25 supported architectures. Most of these definitions are actually identical and typically it boils down to, e.g. static inline unsigned long pmd_index(unsigned long address) { return (address >> PMD_SHIFT) & (PTRS_PER_PMD - 1); } static inline pmd_t *pmd_offset(pud_t *pud, unsigned long address) { return (pmd_t *)pud_page_vaddr(*pud) + pmd_index(address); } These definitions can be shared among 90% of the arches provided XYZ_SHIFT, PTRS_PER_XYZ and xyz_page_vaddr() are defined. For architectures that really need a custom version there is always possibility to override the generic version with the usual ifdefs magic. These patches introduce include/linux/pgtable.h that replaces include/asm-generic/pgtable.h and add the definitions of the page table accessors to the new header. This patch (of 12): The linux/mm.h header includes <asm/pgtable.h> to allow inlining of the functions involving page table manipulations, e.g. pte_alloc() and pmd_alloc(). So, there is no point to explicitly include <asm/pgtable.h> in the files that include <linux/mm.h>. The include statements in such cases are remove with a simple loop: for f in $(git grep -l "include <linux/mm.h>") ; do sed -i -e '/include <asm\/pgtable.h>/ d' $f done Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport <rppt@linux.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Cc: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: Borislav Petkov <bp@alien8.de> Cc: Brian Cain <bcain@codeaurora.org> Cc: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Cc: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net> Cc: "David S. 2020-06-09nds32: add show_stack_loglvl()Dmitry Safonov1-7/+14
Currently, the log-level of show_stack() depends on a platform realization. It creates situations where the headers are printed with lower log level or higher than the stacktrace (depending on a platform or user). Furthermore, it forces the logic decision from user to an architecture side. In result, some users as sysrq/kdb/etc are doing tricks with temporary rising console_loglevel while printing their messages. And in result it not only may print unwanted messages from other CPUs, but also omit printing at all in the unlucky case where the printk() was deferred. Introducing log-level parameter and KERN_UNSUPPRESSED [1] seems an easier approach than introducing more printk buffers. Also, it will consolidate printings with headers. Introduce show_stack_loglvl(), that eventually will substitute show_stack(). 2020-06-09kallsyms/printk: add loglvl to print_ip_sym()Dmitry Safonov1-2/+2
Patch series "Add log level to show_stack()", v3. Add log level argument to show_stack(). Done in three stages: 1. Introducing show_stack_loglvl() for every architecture 2. Migrating old users with an explicit log level 3. Renaming show_stack_loglvl() into show_stack() Justification: - It's a design mistake to move a business-logic decision into platform realization detail. - I have currently two patches sets that would benefit from this work: Removing console_loglevel jumps in sysrq driver [1] Hung task warning before panic [2] - suggested by Tetsuo (but he probably didn't realise what it would involve). - While doing (1), (2) the backtraces were adjusted to headers and other messages for each situation - so there won't be a situation when the backtrace is printed, but the headers are missing because they have lesser log level (or the reverse). - As the result in (2) plays with console_loglevel for kdb are removed. The least important for upstream, but maybe still worth to note that every company I've worked in so far had an off-list patch to print backtrace with the needed log level (but only for the architecture they cared about). If you have other ideas how you will benefit from show_stack() with a log level - please, reply to this cover letter. See also discussion on v1: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-riscv/20191106083538.z5nlpuf64cigxigh@pathway.suse.cz/ This patch (of 50): print_ip_sym() needs to have a log level parameter to comply with other parts being printed. Otherwise, half of the expected backtrace would be printed and other may be missing with some logging level. The following callee(s) are using now the adjusted log level: - microblaze/unwind: the same level as headers & userspace unwind. Note that pr_debug()'s there are for debugging the unwinder itself. - nds32/traps: symbol addresses are printed with the same log level as backtrace headers. - lockdep: ip for locking issues is printed with the same log level as other part of the warning. - sched: ip where preemption was disabled is printed as error like the rest part of the message. - ftrace: bug reports are now consistent in the log level being used. 2020-06-05arch/kmap: remove BUG_ON()Ira Weiny1-1/+1
Patch series "Remove duplicated kmap code", v3. The kmap infrastructure has been copied almost verbatim to every architecture. This series consolidates obvious duplicated code by defining core functions which call into the architectures only when needed. Some of the k[un]map_atomic() implementations have some similarities but the similarities were not sufficient to warrant further changes. In addition we remove a duplicate implementation of kmap() in DRM. This patch (of 15): Replace the use of BUG_ON(in_interrupt()) in the kmap() and kunmap() in favor of might_sleep(). Besides the benefits of might_sleep(), this normalizes the implementations such that they can be made generic in subsequent patches. 2020-04-23arch: split MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC definitions out to <asm/vermagic.h>Masahiro Yamada1-5/+3
As the bug report [1] pointed out, <linux/vermagic.h> must be included after <linux/module.h>. I believe we should not impose any include order restriction. We often sort include directives alphabetically, but it is just coding style convention. Technically, we can include header files in any order by making every header self-contained. Currently, arch-specific MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC is defined in <asm/module.h>, which is not included from <linux/vermagic.h>. Hence, the straight-forward fix-up would be as follows: |--- a/include/linux/vermagic.h |+++ b/include/linux/vermagic.h |@@ -1,5 +1,6 @@ | /* SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL-2.0 */ | #include <generated/utsrelease.h> |+#include <linux/module.h> | | /* Simply sanity version stamp for modules. */ | #ifdef CONFIG_SMP This works enough, but for further cleanups, I split MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC definitions into <asm/vermagic.h>. With this, <linux/module.h> and <linux/vermagic.h> will be orthogonal, and the location of MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC definitions will be consistent. For arc and ia64, MODULE_PROC_FAMILY is only used for defining MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC. I squashed it. For hexagon, nds32, and xtensa, I removed <asm/modules.h> entirely because they contained nothing but MODULE_ARCH_VERMAGIC definition. Kbuild will automatically generate <asm/modules.h> at build-time, wrapping <asm-generic/module.h>. 2020-04-11mm/special: create generic fallbacks for pte_special() and pte_mkspecial()Anshuman Khandual1-9/+0
Currently there are many platforms that dont enable ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL but required to define quite similar fallback stubs for special page table entry helpers such as pte_special() and pte_mkspecial(), as they get build in generic MM without a config check. This creates two generic fallback stub definitions for these helpers, eliminating much code duplication. mips platform has a special case where pte_special() and pte_mkspecial() visibility is wider than what ARCH_HAS_PTE_SPECIAL enablement requires. This restricts those symbol visibility in order to avoid redefinitions which is now exposed through this new generic stubs and subsequent build failure. arm platform set_pte_at() definition needs to be moved into a C file just to prevent a build failure. 2020-04-11mm/vma: introduce VM_ACCESS_FLAGSAnshuman Khandual1-1/+1
There are many places where all basic VMA access flags (read, write, exec) are initialized or checked against as a group. One such example is during page fault. Existing vma_is_accessible() wrapper already creates the notion of VMA accessibility as a group access permissions. Hence lets just create VM_ACCESS_FLAGS (VM_READ|VM_WRITE|VM_EXEC) which will not only reduce code duplication but also extend the VMA accessibility concept in general. 2020-04-11mm/vma: define a default value for VM_DATA_DEFAULT_FLAGSAnshuman Khandual1-3/+0

2020-04-02mm: allow VM_FAULT_RETRY for multiple timesPeter Xu1-1/+0
The idea comes from a discussion between Linus and Andrea [1]. Before this patch we only allow a page fault to retry once. We achieved this by clearing the FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY flag when doing handle_mm_fault() the second time. This was majorly used to avoid unexpected starvation of the system by looping over forever to handle the page fault on a single page. However that should hardly happen, and after all for each code path to return a VM_FAULT_RETRY we'll first wait for a condition (during which time we should possibly yield the cpu) to happen before VM_FAULT_RETRY is really returned. This patch removes the restriction by keeping the FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY flag when we receive VM_FAULT_RETRY. It means that the page fault handler now can retry the page fault for multiple times if necessary without the need to generate another page fault event. Meanwhile we still keep the FAULT_FLAG_TRIED flag so page fault handler can still identify whether a page fault is the first attempt or not. Then we'll have these combinations of fault flags (only considering ALLOW_RETRY flag and TRIED flag): - ALLOW_RETRY and !TRIED: this means the page fault allows to retry, and this is the first try - ALLOW_RETRY and TRIED: this means the page fault allows to retry, and this is not the first try - !ALLOW_RETRY and !TRIED: this means the page fault does not allow to retry at all - !ALLOW_RETRY and TRIED: this is forbidden and should never be used In existing code we have multiple places that has taken special care of the first condition above by checking against (fault_flags & FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY). This patch introduces a simple helper to detect the first retry of a page fault by checking against both (fault_flags & FAULT_FLAG_ALLOW_RETRY) and !(fault_flag & FAULT_FLAG_TRIED) because now even the 2nd try will have the ALLOW_RETRY set, then use that helper in all existing special paths. One example is in __lock_page_or_retry(), now we'll drop the mmap_sem only in the first attempt of page fault and we'll keep it in follow up retries, so old locking behavior will be retained. This will be a nice enhancement for current code [2] at the same time a supporting material for the future userfaultfd-writeprotect work, since in that work there will always be an explicit userfault writeprotect retry for protected pages, and if that cannot resolve the page fault (e.g., when userfaultfd-writeprotect is used in conjunction with swapped pages) then we'll possibly need a 3rd retry of the page fault. It might also benefit other potential users who will have similar requirement like userfault write-protection. GUP code is not touched yet and will be covered in follow up patch. 2020-04-02mm: introduce FAULT_FLAG_DEFAULTPeter Xu1-1/+1
Although there're tons of arch-specific page fault handlers, most of them are still sharing the same initial value of the page fault flags. Say, merely all of the page fault handlers would allow the fault to be retried, and they also allow the fault to respond to SIGKILL. Let's define a default value for the fault flags to replace those initial page fault flags that were copied over. With this, it'll be far easier to introduce new fault flag that can be used by all the architectures instead of touching all the archs. 2020-04-02mm: introduce fault_signal_pending()Peter Xu1-1/+1
For most architectures, we've got a quick path to detect fatal signal after a handle_mm_fault(). Introduce a helper for that quick path. It cleans the current codes a bit so we don't need to duplicate the same check across archs. More importantly, this will be an unified place that we handle the signal immediately right after an interrupted page fault, so it'll be much easier for us if we want to change the behavior of handling signals later on for all the archs. Note that currently only part of the archs are using this new helper, because some archs have their own way to handle signals. In the follow up patches, we'll try to apply this helper to all the rest of archs. Another note is that the "regs" parameter in the new helper is not used yet. It'll be used very soon. Now we kept it in this patch only to avoid touching all the archs again in the follow up patches. Change a header to mandatory-y if both of the following are met: [1] At least one architecture (except um) specifies it as generic-y in arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild [2] Every architecture (except um) either has its own implementation (arch/*/include/asm/*.h) or specifies it as generic-y in arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild This commit was generated by the following shell script. ----------------------------------->8----------------------------------- arches=$(cd arch; ls -1 | sed -e '/Kconfig/d' -e '/um/d') tmpfile=$(mktemp) grep "^mandatory-y +=" include/asm-generic/Kbuild > $tmpfile find arch -path 'arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild' | xargs sed -n 's/^generic-y += \(.*\)/\1/p' | sort -u | while read header do mandatory=yes for arch in $arches do if ! grep -q "generic-y += $header" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild && ! So, mandatory-y works like a fallback default (by just wrapping asm-generic one) when arch does not have a specific header implementation. 2019-12-05nds32: use pgtable-nopmd instead of 4level-fixupMike Rapoport9-35/+47
nds32 has only two-level page tables and can use pgtable-nopmd and folding of the upper layers. Replace usage of include/asm-generic/4level-fixup.h and explicit definition of __PAGETABLE_PMD_FOLDED in nds32 with include/asm-generic/pgtable-nopmd.h and adjust page table manipulation macros and functions accordingly.
