They're the same macros underneath. Drop pXd_is_leaf(), instead always use
pXd_leaf().
At the meantime, instead of renames, drop the pXd_is_leaf() fallback
definitions directly in arch/powerpc/include/asm/pgtable.h. because
similar fallback macros for pXd_leaf() are already defined in
include/linux/pgtable.h.

Optimizing the initialization speed of 1G huge pages through
parallelization.
1G hugetlbs are allocated from bootmem, a process that is already very
fast and does not currently require optimization. Therefore, we focus on
parallelizing only the initialization phase in `gather_bootmem_prealloc`.
Here are some test results:

Patch series "Split crash out from kexec and clean up related config
items", v3.
Motivation:
=============
Previously, LKP reported a building error. When investigating, it can't
be resolved reasonablly with the present messy kdump config items.
https://lore.kernel.org/oe-kbuild-all/202312182200.Ka7MzifQ-lkp@intel.com/
The kdump (crash dumping) related config items could causes confusions:
Firstly,
CRASH_CORE enables codes including
- crashkernel reservation;
- elfcorehdr updating;
- vmcoreinfo exporting;
- crash hotplug handling;
Now fadump of powerpc, kcore dynamic debugging and kdump all selects
CRASH_CORE, while fadump
- fadump needs crashkernel parsing, vmcoreinfo exporting, and accessing
global variable 'elfcorehdr_addr';
- kcore only needs vmcoreinfo exporting;
- kdump needs all of the current kernel/crash_core.c.
So only enabling PROC_CORE or FA_DUMP will enable CRASH_CORE, this
mislead people that we enable crash dumping, actual it's not.
Secondly,
It's not reasonable to allow KEXEC_CORE select CRASH_CORE.
Because KEXEC_CORE enables codes which allocate control pages, copy
kexec/kdump segments, and prepare for switching. These codes are
shared by both kexec reboot and kdump. We could want kexec reboot,
but disable kdump. In that case, CRASH_CORE should not be selected.
--------------------
CONFIG_CRASH_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
---------------------
Thirdly,
It's not reasonable to allow CRASH_DUMP select KEXEC_CORE.
That could make KEXEC_CORE, CRASH_DUMP are enabled independently from
KEXEC or KEXEC_FILE. However, w/o KEXEC or KEXEC_FILE, the KEXEC_CORE
code built in doesn't make any sense because no kernel loading or
switching will happen to utilize the KEXEC_CORE code.
---------------------
CONFIG_CRASH_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
---------------------
In this case, what is worse, on arch sh and arm, KEXEC relies on MMU,
while CRASH_DUMP can still be enabled when !MMU, then compiling error is
seen as the lkp test robot reported in above link.
------arch/sh/Kconfig------
config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KEXEC
def_bool MMU
config ARCH_SUPPORTS_CRASH_DUMP
def_bool BROKEN_ON_SMP
---------------------------
Changes:
===========
1, split out crash_reserve.c from crash_core.c;
2, split out vmcore_infoc. from crash_core.c;
3, move crash related codes in kexec_core.c into crash_core.c;
4, remove dependency of FA_DUMP on CRASH_DUMP;
5, clean up kdump related config items;
6, wrap up crash codes in crash related ifdefs on all 8 arch-es
which support crash dumping, except of ppc;
Achievement:
===========
With above changes, I can rearrange the config item logic as below (the right
item depends on or is selected by the left item):
PROC_KCORE -----------> VMCORE_INFO
|----------> VMCORE_INFO
FA_DUMP----|
|----------> CRASH_RESERVE
---->VMCORE_INFO
/
|---->CRASH_RESERVE
KEXEC --| /|
|--> KEXEC_CORE--> CRASH_DUMP-->/-|---->PROC_VMCORE
KEXEC_FILE --| \ |
\---->CRASH_HOTPLUG
KEXEC --|
|--> KEXEC_CORE (for kexec reboot only)
KEXEC_FILE --|
Test
========
On all 8 architectures, including x86_64, arm64, s390x, sh, arm, mips,
riscv, loongarch, I did below three cases of config item setting and
building all passed. Take configs on x86_64 as exampmle here:
(1) Both CONFIG_KEXEC and KEXEC_FILE is unset, then all kexec/kdump
items are unset automatically:
# Kexec and crash features
# CONFIG_KEXEC is not set
# CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE is not set
# end of Kexec and crash features
(2) set CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE and 'make olddefconfig':
---------------
# Kexec and crash features
CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE=y
CONFIG_VMCORE_INFO=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP=y
CONFIG_CRASH_HOTPLUG=y
CONFIG_CRASH_MAX_MEMORY_RANGES=8192
# end of Kexec and crash features
---------------
(3) unset CONFIG_CRASH_DUMP in case 2 and execute 'make olddefconfig':
------------------------
# Kexec and crash features
CONFIG_KEXEC_CORE=y
CONFIG_KEXEC_FILE=y
# end of Kexec and crash features
------------------------
Note:
For ppc, it needs investigation to make clear how to split out crash
code in arch folder. Hope Hari and Pingfan can help have a look, see if
it's doable. Now, I make it either have both kexec and crash enabled, or
disable both of them altogether.
This patch (of 14):
Both kdump and fa_dump of ppc rely on crashkernel reservation. Move the
relevant codes into separate files: crash_reserve.c,
include/linux/crash_reserve.h.
And also add config item CRASH_RESERVE to control its enabling of the
codes. And update config items which has relationship with crashkernel
reservation.
And also change ifdeffery from CONFIG_CRASH_CORE to CONFIG_CRASH_RESERVE
when those scopes are only crashkernel reservation related.
And also rename arch/XXX/include/asm/{crash_core.h => crash_reserve.h} on
arm64, x86 and risc-v because those architectures' crash_core.h is only
related to crashkernel reservation.

Following patch will use ptdump_check_wx() regardless of CONFIG_DEBUG_WX,
so define it at all times on powerpc and s390 just like other
architectures. Though keep the WARN_ON_ONCE() only when CONFIG_DEBUG_WX
is set.

All architectures using the core ptdump functionality also implement
CONFIG_DEBUG_WX, and they all do it more or less the same way, with a
function called debug_checkwx() that is called by mark_rodata_ro(), which
is a substitute to ptdump_check_wx() when CONFIG_DEBUG_WX is set and a
no-op otherwise.
Refactor by centrally defining debug_checkwx() in linux/ptdump.h and call
debug_checkwx() immediately after calling mark_rodata_ro() instead of
calling it at the end of every mark_rodata_ro().
On x86_32, mark_rodata_ro() first checks __supported_pte_mask has _PAGE_NX
before calling debug_checkwx(). Now the check is inside the callee
ptdump_walk_pgd_level_checkwx().
On powerpc_64, mark_rodata_ro() bails out early before calling
ptdump_check_wx() when the MMU doesn't have KERNEL_RO feature. The check
is now also done in ptdump_check_wx() as it is called outside
mark_rodata_ro().

In kasan_init_region, when k_start is not page aligned, at the begin of
for loop, k_cur = k_start & PAGE_MASK is less than k_start, and then
`va = block + k_cur - k_start` is less than block, the addr va is invalid,
because the memory address space from va to block is not alloced by
memblock_alloc, which will not be reserved by memblock_reserve later, it
will be used by other places.
As a result, memory overwriting occurs.
for example:
int __init __weak kasan_init_region(void *start, size_t size)
{
[...]
/* if say block(dcd97000) k_start(feef7400) k_end(feeff3fe) */
block = memblock_alloc(k_end - k_start, PAGE_SIZE);
[...]
for (k_cur = k_start & PAGE_MASK; k_cur < k_end; k_cur += PAGE_SIZE) {
/* at the begin of for loop
* block(dcd97000) va(dcd96c00) k_cur(feef7000) k_start(feef7400)
* va(dcd96c00) is less than block(dcd97000), va is invalid
*/
void *va = block + k_cur - k_start;
[...]
}
[...]
}
Therefore, page alignment is performed on k_start before
memblock_alloc() to ensure the validity of the VA address.

commit 23baf831a32c ("mm, treewide: redefine MAX_ORDER sanely") has
changed the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive. This has caused
issues with code that was not yet upstream and depended on the previous
definition.
To draw attention to the altered meaning of the define, rename MAX_ORDER

A test [1] in Android test suite started failing after [2] was merged. It
turns out that after handling a major fault under per-VMA lock, the
process major fault counter does not register that fault as major. Before
[2] read faults would be done under mmap_lock, in which case
FAULT_FLAG_TRIED flag is set before retrying. That in turn causes
mm_account_fault() to account the fault as major once retry completes.
With per-VMA locks we often retry because a fault can't be handled without
locking the whole mm using mmap_lock. Therefore such retries do not set
FAULT_FLAG_TRIED flag. This logic does not work after [2] because we can
now handle read major faults under per-VMA lock and upon retry the fact
there was a major fault gets lost. Fix this by setting FAULT_FLAG_TRIED
after retrying under per-VMA lock if VM_FAULT_MAJOR was returned. Ideally
we would use an additional VM_FAULT bit to indicate the reason for the
retry (could not handle under per-VMA lock vs other reason) but this
simpler solution seems to work, so keeping it simple.

There used to be a dependency on _PAGE_PRIVILEGED with pte_savedwrite.
But that got dropped by
commit 6a56ccbcf6c6 ("mm/autonuma: use can_change_(pte|pmd)_writable() to replace savedwrite")
With the change in this patch numa fault pte (pte_protnone()) gets mapped as regular user pte
with RWX cleared (no-access) whereas earlier it used to be mapped _PAGE_PRIVILEGED.
Hash fault handling code gets some WARN_ON added in this patch because
those functions are not expected to get called with _PAGE_READ cleared.

With commit 9fee28baa601 ("powerpc: implement the new page table range
API") we added set_ptes to powerpc architecture. The implementation
included calling arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() calls.
The patch removes the usage of arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() because
set_pte is not supposed to be used when updating a pte entry. Powerpc
architecture uses this rule to skip the expensive tlb invalidate which
is not needed when you are setting up the pte for the first time. See
commit 56eecdb912b5 ("mm: Use ptep/pmdp_set_numa() for updating
_PAGE_NUMA bit") for more details
The patch also makes sure we are not using the interface to update a
valid/present pte entry by adding VM_WARN_ON check all the ptes we
are setting up. Furthermore, we add a comment to set_pte_filter to
clarify it can only update folio-related flags and cannot filter
pfn specific details in pte filtering.
Removal of arch_enter/leave_lazy_mmu() also will avoid nesting of
these functions that are not supported. For ex:
remap_pte_range()
-> arch_enter_lazy_mmu()
-> set_ptes()
-> arch_enter_lazy_mmu()
-> arch_leave_lazy_mmu()
-> arch_leave_lazy_mmu()

A bisect pointed to the breakage beginning with commit 9fee28baa601 ("powerpc:
implement the new page table range API").
Analysis of the oops pointed to a struct page with a corrupted
compound_head being loaded via page_folio() -> _compound_head() in
hash_page_do_lazy_icache().
The access by the mpic code is to an MMIO address, so the expectation
is that the struct page for that address would be initialised by
init_unavailable_range(), as pointed out by Aneesh.
Instrumentation showed that was not the case, which eventually lead to
the realisation that pfn_valid() was returning false for that address,
causing the struct page to not be initialised.
Because the system is using FLATMEM, the version of pfn_valid() in
memory_model.h is used:
static inline int pfn_valid(unsigned long pfn)
{
...
return pfn >= pfn_offset && (pfn - pfn_offset) < max_mapnr;
}
Which relies on max_mapnr being initialised. Early in boot max_mapnr is
zero meaning no PFNs are valid.
max_mapnr is initialised in mem_init() called via:
start_kernel()
mm_core_init() # init/main.c:928
mem_init()
But that is too late for the usage in init_unavailable_range() called via:
start_kernel()
setup_arch() # init/main.c:893
paging_init()
free_area_init()
init_unavailable_range()
Although max_mapnr is currently set in mem_init(), the value is actually
already available much earlier, as soon as mem_topology_setup() has
completed, which is also before paging_init() is called. So move the
initialisation there, which causes paging_init() to correctly initialise
the struct page and fixes the bug.
This bug seems to have been lurking for years, but went unnoticed
because the pre-folio code was inspecting the uninitialised page->flags
but not dereferencing it.
Thanks to Erhard and Aneesh for help debugging.

Sparse reports several endianness warnings on variables and functions
that are consistently treated as big endian. There are no
multi-endianness shenanigans going on here so fix these low hanging
fruit up in one patch.
All changes are just type annotations; no endianness switching
operations are introduced by this patch.

Introduce PAGE_EXECONLY_X macro which provides exec-only rights.
The _X may be seen as redundant with the EXECONLY but it helps
keep consistency, all macros having the EXEC right have _X.
And put it next to PAGE_NONE as PAGE_EXECONLY_X is
somehow PAGE_NONE + EXEC just like all other SOMETHING_X are
just SOMETHING + EXEC.
On book3s/64 PAGE_EXECONLY becomes PAGE_READONLY_X.
On book3s/64, as PAGE_EXECONLY is only valid for Radix add
VM_READ flag in vm_get_page_prot() for non-Radix.
And update access_error() so that a non exec fault on a VM_EXEC only
mapping is always invalid, even when the underlying layer don't
always generate a fault for that.
For 8xx, set PAGE_EXECONLY_X as _PAGE_NA | _PAGE_EXEC.
For others, only set it as just _PAGE_EXEC
With that change, 8xx, e500 and 44x fully honor execute-only
protection.
On 40x that is a partial implementation of execute-only. The
implementation won't be complete because once a TLB has been loaded
via the Instruction TLB miss handler, it will be possible to read
the page. But at least it can't be read unless it is executed first.
On 603 MMU, TLB missed are handled by SW and there are separate
DTLB and ITLB. Execute-only is therefore now supported by not loading
DTLB when read access is not permitted.
On hash (604) MMU it is more tricky because hash table is common to
load/store and execute. Nevertheless it is still possible to check
whether _PAGE_READ is set before loading hash table for a load/store
access. At least it can't be read unless it is executed first.

On 603 MMU, TLB missed are handled by SW and there are separated
DTLB and ITLB. It is therefore possible to implement execute-only
protection by not loading DTLB when read access is not permitted.
To do that, _PAGE_READ flag is needed but there is no bit available
for it in PTE. On the other hand the only real use of _PAGE_USER is
to implement PAGE_NONE by clearing _PAGE_USER.
As _PAGE_NONE can also be implemented by clearing _PAGE_READ, remove
_PAGE_USER and add _PAGE_READ. Then use the virtual address to know
whether user rights or kernel rights are to be used.
With that change, 603 MMU now honors execute-only protection.
For hash (604) MMU it is more tricky because hash table is common to
load/store and execute. Nevertheless it is still possible to check

_PAGE_USER is used to select the zone. Today zone 0 is kernel
and zone 1 is user.
To implement _PAGE_NONE, _PAGE_USER is cleared, leading to no access
for user but kernel still has access to the page so it's possible for
a user application to write in that page by using a kernel function
as trampoline.
What is really wanted is to have user rights on pages below TASK_SIZE
and no user rights on pages above TASK_SIZE. Use zones for that.
There are 16 zones so lets use the 4 upper address bits to set the
zone and declare zone rights based on TASK_SIZE.
Then drop _PAGE_USER and reuse it as _PAGE_READ that will be checked
in Data TLB miss handler. That will properly handle PAGE_NONE for
both kernel and user.
In addition, it partially implements execute-only right. The
implementation won't be complete because once a TLB has been loaded

the page. But at least it can't be read unless it is executed first.

final TLB flush and lazy tlb mm shootdown IPIs"), which added a warning
in radix__tlb_flush() if mm->context.copros is still elevated.
However it's possible for the copros count to be elevated if a process
exits without first closing file descriptors that are associated with a
copro, eg. VAS.
If the process exits with a VAS file still open, the release callback
is queued up for exit_task_work() via:
exit_files()
put_files_struct()
close_files()
filp_close()
fput()
And called via:
exit_task_work()
____fput()
__fput()
file->f_op->release(inode, file)
coproc_release()
vas_user_win_ops->close_win()
vas_deallocate_window()
mm_context_remove_vas_window()
mm_context_remove_copro()
But that is after exit_mm() has been called from do_exit() and triggered
the warning.
Fix it by dropping the warning, and always calling __flush_all_mm().
In the normal case of no copros, that will result in a call to
_tlbiel_pid(mm->context.id, RIC_FLUSH_ALL) just as the current code
does.
If the copros count is elevated then it will cause a global flush, which
should flush translations from any copros. Note that the process table
entry was cleared in arch_exit_mmap(), so copros should not be able to
fetch any new translations.

Patch series "Fix set_huge_pte_at() panic on arm64", v2.
This series fixes a bug in arm64's implementation of set_huge_pte_at(),
which can result in an unprivileged user causing a kernel panic. The
problem was triggered when running the new uffd poison mm selftest for
HUGETLB memory. This test (and the uffd poison feature) was merged for
v6.5-rc7.
Ideally, I'd like to get this fix in for v6.6 and I've cc'ed stable
(correctly this time) to get it backported to v6.5, where the issue first
showed up.
Description of Bug
==================
arm64's huge pte implementation supports multiple huge page sizes, some of
which are implemented in the page table with multiple contiguous entries.
So set_huge_pte_at() needs to work out how big the logical pte is, so that
it can also work out how many physical ptes (or pmds) need to be written.
It previously did this by grabbing the folio out of the pte and querying
its size.
However, there are cases when the pte being set is actually a swap entry.
But this also used to work fine, because for huge ptes, we only ever saw
migration entries and hwpoison entries. And both of these types of swap
entries have a PFN embedded, so the code would grab that and everything
still worked out.
But over time, more calls to set_huge_pte_at() have been added that set
swap entry types that do not embed a PFN. And this causes the code to go
bang. The triggering case is for the uffd poison test, commit
99aa77215ad0 ("selftests/mm: add uffd unit test for UFFDIO_POISON"), which
causes a PTE_MARKER_POISONED swap entry to be set, coutesey of commit
8a13897fb0da ("mm: userfaultfd: support UFFDIO_POISON for hugetlbfs") -
added in v6.5-rc7. Although review shows that there are other call sites
that set PTE_MARKER_UFFD_WP (which also has no PFN), these don't trigger
on arm64 because arm64 doesn't support UFFD WP.
If CONFIG_DEBUG_VM is enabled, we do at least get a BUG(), but otherwise,
it will dereference a bad pointer in page_folio():
static inline struct folio *hugetlb_swap_entry_to_folio(swp_entry_t entry)
{
VM_BUG_ON(!is_migration_entry(entry) && !is_hwpoison_entry(entry));
return page_folio(pfn_to_page(swp_offset_pfn(entry)));
}
Fix
===
The simplest fix would have been to revert the dodgy cleanup commit
18f3962953e4 ("mm: hugetlb: kill set_huge_swap_pte_at()"), but since
things have moved on, this would have required an audit of all the new
set_huge_pte_at() call sites to see if they should be converted to
set_huge_swap_pte_at(). As per the original intent of the change, it
would also leave us open to future bugs when people invariably get it
wrong and call the wrong helper.
So instead, I've added a huge page size parameter to set_huge_pte_at().
This means that the arm64 code has the size in all cases. It's a bigger
change, due to needing to touch the arches that implement the function,
but it is entirely mechanical, so in my view, low risk.
I've compile-tested all touched arches; arm64, parisc, powerpc, riscv,
s390, sparc (and additionally x86_64). I've additionally booted and run
mm selftests against arm64, where I observe the uffd poison test is fixed,
and there are no other regressions.
This patch (of 2):
In order to fix a bug, arm64 needs to be told the size of the huge page
for which the pte is being set in set_huge_pte_at(). Provide for this by
adding an `unsigned long sz` parameter to the function. This follows the
same pattern as huge_pte_clear().
This commit makes the required interface modifications to the core mm as
well as all arches that implement this function (arm64, parisc, powerpc,
riscv, s390, sparc). The actual arm64 bug will be fixed in a separate
commit.
No behavioral changes intended.

Commit 4d15721177d5 ("powerpc/mm: Cleanup memory block size probing")
used 256MB as the memory block size when we have
ibm,coherent-device-memory device tree node present. Instead of
returning with 256MB memory block size, continue to check the rest of
the memory regions and make sure we can still map them using a 256MB
memory block size.

With CONFIG_SPARSEMEM disabled the below kernel build error is observed.
arch/powerpc/mm/init_64.c:477:38: error: use of undeclared identifier 'SECTION_SIZE_BITS'
CONFIG_MEMORY_HOTPLUG depends on CONFIG_SPARSEMEM and it is more clear
to describe the code dependency in terms of MEMORY_HOTPLUG. Outside
memory hotplug the kernel uses memory_block_size for kernel directmap.
Instead of depending on SECTION_SIZE_BITS to compute the direct map
page size, add a new #define which defaults to 16M(same as existing
SECTION_SIZE)
