The cpu feature defined by MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE is only referenced when compiling as a module, and the warning of unused variable will be encountered when compiling with intree. The warning can be removed by adding the __maybe_unused flag. 2022-11-18hwrng: core - treat default_quality as a maximum and default to 1024Jason A. Donenfeld1-1/+0
Most hw_random devices return entropy which is assumed to be of full quality, but driver authors don't bother setting the quality knob. Some hw_random devices return less than full quality entropy, and then driver authors set the quality knob. Therefore, the entropy crediting should be opt-out rather than opt-in per-driver, to reflect the actual reality on the ground. For example, the two Raspberry Pi RNG drivers produce full entropy randomness, and both EDK2 and U-Boot's drivers for these treat them as such. The result is that EFI then uses these numbers and passes the to Linux, and Linux credits them as boot, thereby initializing the RNG. Yet, in Linux, the quality knob was never set to anything, and so on the chance that Linux is booted without EFI, nothing is ever credited. That's annoying. The same pattern appears to repeat itself throughout various drivers. In fact, very very few drivers have bothered setting quality=1024. Looking at the git history of existing drivers and corresponding mailing list discussion, this conclusion tracks. There's been a decent amount of discussion about drivers that set quality < 1024 -- somebody read and interepreted a datasheet, or made some back of the envelope calculation somehow. But there's been very little, if any, discussion about most drivers where the quality is just set to 1024 or unset (or set to 1000 when the authors misunderstood the API and assumed it was base-10 rather than base-2); in both cases the intent was fairly clear of, "this is a hardware random device; it's fine." So let's invert this logic. A hw_random struct's quality knob now controls the maximum quality a driver can produce, or 0 to specify 1024. Then, the module-wide switch called "default_quality" is changed to represent the maximum quality of any driver. By default it's 1024, and the quality of any particular driver is then given by: min(default_quality, rng->quality ?: 1024); This way, the user can still turn this off for weird reasons (and we can replace whatever driver-specific disabling hacks existed in the past), yet we get proper crediting for relevant RNGs. 2022-11-11crypto: move gf128mul library into lib/cryptoArd Biesheuvel2-2/+2
The gf128mul library does not depend on the crypto API at all, so it can be moved into lib/crypto. This will allow us to use it in other library code in a subsequent patch without having to depend on CONFIG_CRYPTO. While at it, change the Kconfig symbol name to align with other crypto library implementations. However, the source file name is retained, as it is reflected in the module .ko filename, and changing this might break things for users. This patch does not add new features, but only refactors and simplifies the implementation of the Crypto Extension acceleration of the SM4 algorithm: Extract the macro optimized by SM4 Crypto Extension for reuse in the subsequent optimization of CCM/GCM modes. Encryption in CBC and CFB modes processes four blocks at a time instead of one, allowing the ld1 instruction to load 64 bytes of data at a time, which will reduces unnecessary memory accesses. CBC/CFB/CTR makes full use of free registers to reduce redundant memory accesses, and rearranges some instructions to improve out-of-order execution capabilities. This patch does not add new features. The main work is to refactor and simplify the implementation of SM4 NEON, which is reflected in the following aspects: The accelerated implementation supports the arbitrary number of blocks, not just multiples of 8, which simplifies the implementation and brings some optimization acceleration for data that is not aligned by 8 blocks. When loading the input data, use the ld4 instruction to replace the original ld1 instruction as much as possible, which will save the cost of matrix transposition of the input data. Use 8-block parallelism whenever possible to speed up matrix transpose and rotation operations, instead of up to 4-block parallelism. The current rules for doing this right are: - If you want a secure or an insecure random u64, use get_random_u64() - If you want a secure or an insecure random u32, use get_random_u32() The old function prandom_u32() has been deprecated for a while now and is just a wrapper around get_random_u32(). Same for get_random_int(). - If you want a secure or an insecure random u16, use get_random_u16() - If you want a secure or an insecure random u8, use get_random_u8() - If you want secure or insecure random bytes, use get_random_bytes(). The old function prandom_bytes() has been deprecated for a while now and has long been a wrapper around get_random_bytes() - If you want a non-uniform random u32, u16, or u8 bounded by a certain open interval maximum, use prandom_u32_max() I say "non-uniform", because it doesn't do any rejection sampling or divisions. Hence, it stays within the prandom_*() namespace, not the get_random_*() namespace. I'm currently investigating a "uniform" function for 6.2. We'll see what comes of that. By applying these rules uniformly, we get several benefits: - By using prandom_u32_max() with an upper-bound that the compiler can prove at compile-time is ≤65536 or ≤256, internally get_random_u16() or get_random_u8() is used, which wastes fewer batched random bytes, and hence has higher throughput. - By using prandom_u32_max() instead of %, when the upper-bound is not a constant, division is still avoided, because prandom_u32_max() uses a faster multiplication-based trick instead. - By using get_random_u16() or get_random_u8() in cases where the return value is intended to indeed be a u16 or a u8, we waste fewer batched random bytes, and hence have higher throughput. This series was originally done by hand while I was on an airplane without Internet. Later, Kees and I worked on retroactively figuring out what could be done with Coccinelle and what had to be done manually, and then we split things up based on that. Commit df24e1783e6e ("parisc: Add vDSO support") introduced the vDSO support, for which a _PAGE_SPECIAL page table flag was needed. Since we wanted to keep every page table entry in 32-bits, this patch re-used the existing - but yet unused - _PAGE_DMB flag (which triggers a hardware break if a page is accessed) to store the special bit. But when graphics card memory is mmapped into userspace, the kernel uses vm_iomap_memory() which sets the the special flag. So, with the DMB bit set, every access to the graphics memory now triggered a hardware exception and segfaulted the userspace program. Fix this breakage by dropping the DMB bit when writing the page protection bits to the CPU TLB. In addition this patch adds a small optimization: if huge pages aren't configured (which is at least the case for 32-bit kernels), then the special bit is stored in the hpage (HUGE PAGE) bit instead. Commit 2139619bcad7 ("riscv: mmap with PROT_WRITE but no PROT_READ is invalid") made mmap() reject mappings with only PROT_WRITE set in an attempt to fix an observed inconsistency in behavior when attempting to read from a PROT_WRITE-only mapping. The root cause of this behavior was actually that while RISC-V's protection_map maps VM_WRITE to readable PTE permissions (since write-only PTEs are considered reserved by the privileged spec), the page fault handler considered loads from VM_WRITE-only VMAs illegal accesses. It's possible for an interrupt returning to an irqs-disabled context to lose a pending soft-masked irq because it branches to part of the exit code for irqs-enabled contexts, which is meant to clear only the PACA_IRQS_HARD_DIS flag from PACAIRQHAPPENED by zeroing the byte. This just looks like a simple thinko from a recent commit (if there was no hard mask pending, there would be no reason to clear it anyway). This also adds comment to the code that actually does need to clear the flag. I don't think we can actually die() without a regs pointer, but the compiler was warning about a NULL check after a dereference. It seems prudent to just avoid the possibly-NULL dereference, given that when die()ing the system is already toast so who knows how we got there. 2022-10-13LoongArch: update local TLB if PTE entry existsQi Zheng1-0/+3
Currently, the implementation of update_mmu_tlb() is empty if __HAVE_ARCH_UPDATE_MMU_TLB is not defined. Then if two threads concurrently fault at the same page, the second thread that did not win the race will give up and do nothing. In the LoongArch architecture, this second thread will trigger another fault, and only updates its local TLB. Instead of triggering another fault, it's better to implement update_mmu_tlb() to directly update the local TLB of the second thread. Just do it. 2022-10-13mm: free device private pages have zero refcountAlistair Popple1-1/+1
Since 27674ef6c73f ("mm: remove the extra ZONE_DEVICE struct page refcount") device private pages have no longer had an extra reference count when the page is in use. However before handing them back to the owning device driver we add an extra reference count such that free pages have a reference count of one. This makes it difficult to tell if a page is free or not because both free and in use pages will have a non-zero refcount. Instead we should return pages to the drivers page allocator with a zero reference count. Kernel code can then safely use kernel functions such as get_page_unless_zero(). 2022-10-13mm/memory.c: fix race when faulting a device private pageAlistair Popple1-8/+11
Patch series "Fix several device private page reference counting issues", v2 This series aims to fix a number of page reference counting issues in drivers dealing with device private ZONE_DEVICE pages. These result in use-after-free type bugs, either from accessing a struct page which no longer exists because it has been removed or accessing fields within the struct page which are no longer valid because the page has been freed. During normal usage it is unlikely these will cause any problems. However without these fixes it is possible to crash the kernel from userspace. These crashes can be triggered either by unloading the kernel module or unbinding the device from the driver prior to a userspace task exiting. In modules such as Nouveau it is also possible to trigger some of these issues by explicitly closing the device file-descriptor prior to the task exiting and then accessing device private memory. This involves some minor changes to both PowerPC and AMD GPU code. Unfortunately I lack hardware to test either of those so any help there would be appreciated. The changes mimic what is done in for both Nouveau and hmm-tests though so I doubt they will cause problems. This patch (of 8): When the CPU tries to access a device private page the migrate_to_ram() callback associated with the pgmap for the page is called. However no reference is taken on the faulting page. Therefore a concurrent migration of the device private page can free the page and possibly the underlying pgmap. This results in a race which can crash the kernel due to the migrate_to_ram() function pointer becoming invalid. It also means drivers can't reliably read the zone_device_data field because the page may have been freed with memunmap_pages(). Close the race by getting a reference on the page while holding the ptl to ensure it has not been freed. Unfortunately the elevated reference count will cause the migration required to handle the fault to fail. To avoid this failure pass the faulting page into the migrate_vma functions so that if an elevated reference count is found it can be checked to see if it's expected or not.
