git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton: "Many singleton patches against the MM code. The patch series which are included in this merge do the following: - Kemeng Shi has contributed some compation maintenance work in the series 'Fixes and cleanups to compaction' - Joel Fernandes has a patchset ('Optimize mremap during mutual alignment within PMD') which fixes an obscure issue with mremap()'s pagetable handling during a subsequent exec(), based upon an implementation which Linus suggested - More DAMON/DAMOS maintenance and feature work from SeongJae Park i the following patch series: mm/damon: misc fixups for documents, comments and its tracepoint mm/damon: add a tracepoint for damos apply target regions mm/damon: provide pseudo-moving sum based access rate mm/damon: implement DAMOS apply intervals mm/damon/core-test: Fix memory leaks in core-test mm/damon/sysfs-schemes: Do DAMOS tried regions update for only one apply interval - In the series 'Do not try to access unaccepted memory' Adrian Hunter provides some fixups for the recently-added 'unaccepted memory' feature. To increase the feature's checking coverage. 'Plug a few gaps where RAM is exposed without checking if it is unaccepted memory' - In the series 'cleanups for lockless slab shrink' Qi Zheng has done some maintenance work which is preparation for the lockless slab shrinking code - Qi Zheng has redone the earlier (and reverted) attempt to make slab shrinking lockless in the series 'use refcount+RCU method to implement lockless slab shrink' - David Hildenbrand contributes some maintenance work for the rmap code in the series 'Anon rmap cleanups' - Kefeng Wang does more folio conversions and some maintenance work in the migration code. Series 'mm: migrate: more folio conversion and unification' - Matthew Wilcox has fixed an issue in the buffer_head code which was causing long stalls under some heavy memory/IO loads. Some cleanups were added on the way. Series 'Add and use bdev_getblk()' - In the series 'Use nth_page() in place of direct struct page manipulation' Zi Yan has fixed a potential issue with the direct manipulation of hugetlb page frames - In the series 'mm: hugetlb: Skip initialization of gigantic tail struct pages if freed by HVO' has improved our handling of gigantic pages in the hugetlb vmmemmep optimizaton code. This provides significant boot time improvements when significant amounts of gigantic pages are in use - Matthew Wilcox has sent the series 'Small hugetlb cleanups' - code rationalization and folio conversions in the hugetlb code - Yin Fengwei has improved mlock()'s handling of large folios in the series 'support large folio for mlock' - In the series 'Expose swapcache stat for memcg v1' Liu Shixin has added statistics for memcg v1 users which are available (and useful) under memcg v2 - Florent Revest has enhanced the MDWE (Memory-Deny-Write-Executable) prctl so that userspace may direct the kernel to not automatically propagate the denial to child processes. 2023-10-16drm/ttm: Reorder sys manager cleanup stepKarolina Stolarek1-4/+4
With the current cleanup flow, we could trigger a NULL pointer dereference if there is a delayed destruction of a BO with a system resource that gets executed on drain_workqueue() call, as we attempt to free a resource using an already released resource manager. Remove the device from the device list and drain its workqueue before releasing the system domain manager in ttm_device_fini(). 2023-10-04drm/ttm: introduce pool_shrink_rwsemQi Zheng1-1/+16
Currently, synchronize_shrinkers() is only used by TTM pool. It only requires that no shrinkers run in parallel. After we use RCU+refcount method to implement the lockless slab shrink, we can not use shrinker_rwsem or synchronize_rcu() to guarantee that all shrinker invocations have seen an update before freeing memory. So we introduce a new pool_shrink_rwsem to implement a private ttm_pool_synchronize_shrinkers(), so as to achieve the same purpose. 2023-07-10drm/ttm: Use init_on_free to delay release TTM BOsRajneesh Bhardwaj1-0/+1
Delay release TTM BOs when the kernel default setting is init_on_free. This offloads the overhead of clearing the system memory to the work item and potentially a different CPU. 2023-04-06drm/ttm: Make the call to ttm_tt_populate() interruptible when faultingThomas Hellström1-3/+10
When swapping in, or under memory pressure ttm_tt_populate() may sleep for a substantiable amount of time. Allow interrupts during the sleep. This will also allow us to inject -EINTR errors during swapin in upcoming patches. Also avoid returning VM_FAULT_OOM, since that will confuse the core mm, making it print out a confused message and retrying the fault. Return VM_FAULT_SIGBUS also under OOM conditions. 2023-04-06drm/ttm: Reduce the number of used allocation orders for TTM pagesThomas Hellström1-11/+19
When swapping out, we will split multi-order pages both in order to move them to the swap-cache and to be able to return memory to the swap cache as soon as possible on a page-by-page basis. Reduce the page max order to the system PMD size, as we can then be nicer to the system and avoid splitting gigantic pages. 2023-03-07drm/ttm: Fix a NULL pointer dereferenceThomas Hellström1-1/+1
The LRU mechanism may look up a resource in the process of being removed from an object. The locking rules here are a bit unclear but it looks currently like res->bo assignment is protected by the LRU lock, whereas bo->resource is protected by the object lock, while *clearing* of bo->resource is also protected by the LRU lock. This means that if we check that bo->resource points to the LRU resource under the LRU lock we should be safe. So perform that check before deciding to swap out a bo. That avoids dereferencing a NULL bo->resource in ttm_bo_swapout(). 2023-02-23drm/gem-vram: handle NULL bo->resource in move callbackMatthew Auld1-2/+2
The ttm BO now initially has NULL bo->resource, and leaves the driver the handle that. However it looks like we forgot to handle that for ttm_bo_move_memcpy() users, like with vram-gem, since it just silently returns zero. This seems to then trigger warnings like: WARNING: CPU: 0 PID: 1 at drivers/gpu/drm/drm_gem_vram_helper.c:255 drm_gem_vram_offset (??:?) Fix this by calling move_null() if the new resource is TTM_PL_SYSTEM, otherwise do the multi-hop sequence to ensure can safely call into ttm_bo_move_memcpy(), since it might also need to clear the memory. This should give the same behaviour as before. While we are here let's also treat calling ttm_bo_move_memcpy() with NULL bo->resource as programmer error, where expectation is that upper layers should now handle it. 2023-02-06drm/ttm: prevent moving of pinned BOsChristian König2-9/+12
We have checks for this in the individual drivers move callback, but it's probably better to generally forbid that on a higher level. Also stops exporting ttm_resource_compat() since that's not necessary any more after removing the extra checks in vmwgfx. 2023-02-06drm/ttm: clear the ttm_tt when bo->resource is NULLMatthew Auld1-2/+1
In the next few patches, when initially creating a ttm BO, the bo->resource is NULL, and the driver is then expected to handle the initial dummy move. However, if this is created as a system resource the first ttm_tt we create will always have the clear value set to false. Previously the initial ttm_tt would be created in ttm_bo_validate() with the clear parameter always set to true. Due to holidays we started -next with more -fixes in-flight than usual, and people have been asking where they are. Backmerge to get things better in sync. Conflicts: - Tiny conflict in drm_fbdev_generic.c between variable rename and missing error handling that got added. - Conflict in drm_fb_helper.c between the added call to vgaswitcheroo in drm_fb_helper_single_fb_probe and a refactor patch that extracted lots of helpers and incidentally removed the dev local variable.
