In preparation for FORTIFY_SOURCE performing compile-time and run-time field bounds checking for memset(), avoid intentionally writing across neighboring fields. Instead of writing across a field boundary with memset(), move the call to just the array, and an explicit zeroing of the prior field. 2021-09-14memblock: introduce saner 'memblock_free_ptr()' interfaceLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
The boot-time allocation interface for memblock is a mess, with 'memblock_alloc()' returning a virtual pointer, but then you are supposed to free it with 'memblock_free()' that takes a _physical_ address. Not only is that all kinds of strange and illogical, but it actually causes bugs, when people then use it like a normal allocation function, and it fails spectacularly on a NULL pointer: https://lore.kernel.org/all/20210912140820.GD25450@xsang-OptiPlex-9020/ or just random memory corruption if the debug checks don't catch it: https://lore.kernel.org/all/61ab2d0c-3313-aaab-514c-e15b7aa054a0@suse.cz/ I really don't want to apply patches that treat the symptoms, when the fundamental cause is this horribly confusing interface. I started out looking at just automating a sane replacement sequence, but because of this mix or virtual and physical addresses, and because people have used the "__pa()" macro that can take either a regular kernel pointer, or just the raw "unsigned long" address, it's all quite messy. So this just introduces a new saner interface for freeing a virtual address that was allocated using 'memblock_alloc()', and that was kept as a regular kernel pointer. And then it converts a couple of users that are obvious and easy to test, including the 'xbc_nodes' case in lib/bootconfig.c that caused problems. 2019-07-04powerpc/64: flush_inval_dcache_range() becomes flush_dcache_range()Christophe Leroy1-2/+2
On most arches having function flush_dcache_range(), including PPC32, this function does a writeback and invalidation of the cache bloc. On PPC64, flush_dcache_range() only does a writeback while flush_inval_dcache_range() does the invalidation in addition. In addition it looks like within arch/powerpc/, there are no PPC64 platforms using flush_dcache_range() This patch drops the existing 64 bits version of flush_dcache_range() and renames flush_inval_dcache_range() into flush_dcache_range(). 2018-10-31memblock: stop using implicit alignment to SMP_CACHE_BYTESMike Rapoport1-1/+1
When a memblock allocation APIs are called with align = 0, the alignment is implicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES. Implicit alignment is done deep in the memblock allocator and it can come as a surprise. Not that such an alignment would be wrong even when used incorrectly but it is better to be explicit for the sake of clarity and the prinicple of the least surprise. Replace all such uses of memblock APIs with the 'align' parameter explicitly set to SMP_CACHE_BYTES and stop implicit alignment assignment in the memblock internal allocation functions. For the case when memblock APIs are used via helper functions, e.g. like iommu_arena_new_node() in Alpha, the helper functions were detected with Coccinelle's help and then manually examined and updated where appropriate. 2016-09-20powerpc: Remove all usages of NO_IRQMichael Ellerman1-9/+9
NO_IRQ has been == 0 on powerpc for just over ten years (since commit 0ebfff1491ef ("[POWERPC] Add new interrupt mapping core and change platforms to use it")). It's also 0 on most other arches. Although it's fairly harmless, every now and then it causes confusion when a driver is built on powerpc and another arch which doesn't define NO_IRQ. There's at least 6 definitions of NO_IRQ in drivers/, at least some of which are to work around that problem. So we'd like to remove it. This is fairly trivial in the arch code, we just convert: if (irq == NO_IRQ) to if (!irq) if (irq != NO_IRQ) to if (irq) irq = NO_IRQ; to irq = 0; return NO_IRQ; to return 0; And a few other odd cases as well. At least for now we keep the #define NO_IRQ, because there is driver code that uses NO_IRQ and the fixes to remove those will go via other trees. Note we also change some occurrences in PPC sound drivers, drivers/ps3, and drivers/macintosh. Signed-off-by: Michael Ellerman <mpe@ellerman.id.au>

None of these drivers appears to want to lock against other code, and they all use the BKL as the top-level lock in their file operations, meaning that there is no lock-order inversion problem. Consequently, we can remove the BKL completely, replacing it with a per-file mutex in every case. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-0/+1
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. The semantic match that finds this kind of pattern is as follows: (http://coccinelle.lip6.fr/) // <smpl> @r@ disable decl_init,const_decl_init; identifier I1, I2, x; @@ struct I1 { ... const struct I2 *x; ... }; @s@ identifier r.I1, y; identifier r.x, E; @@ struct I1 y = { .x = E, }; @c@ identifier r.I2; identifier s.E; @@ const struct I2 E[] = ... ; @depends on !c@ identifier r.I2; identifier s.E; @@ + const struct I2 E[] = ...; // </smpl> Signed-off-by: Márton Németh <nm127@freemail.hu> Cc: Julia Lawall <julia@diku.dk> Cc: cocci@diku.dk Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org>

2008-07-01drivers/macintosh/smu.c: Improve error handlingJulia Lawall1-15/+19
This makes two changes: * As noted by Akinobu Mita in patch b1fceac2b9e04d278316b2faddf276015fc06e3b, alloc_bootmem never returns NULL and always returns a zeroed region of memory. Thus the error checking code and memset after the call to alloc_bootmem are not necessary. * The old error handling code consisted of setting a global variable to NULL and returning an error code, which could cause previously allocated resources never to be freed. The patch adds calls to appropriate resource deallocation functions. Signed-off-by: Julia Lawall <julia@diku.dk> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>
