2010-12-09powerpc/powermac: Make auto-loading of therm_pm72 possibleMarc Zyngier1-25/+5
The therm_pm72 driver, used on the PowerMac G5 range, cannot be auto-loaded, since the driver itself creates both the device node and the driver instance. Moving the device node creation to the platform setup code and adding the necessary MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE() information allows the driver to be automatically loaded by udev on any semi-modern distribution. It "fixes" a major source of problem on G5 machines where the driver wasn't explicitely loaded by default, and the system would automatically shutdown under load. Tested on an Xserve G5. 2010-08-06of/device: Replace struct of_device with struct platform_deviceGrant Likely1-3/+3
of_device is just an alias for platform_device, so remove it entirely. Also replace to_of_device() with to_platform_device() and update comment blocks. This patch was initially generated from the following semantic patch, and then edited by hand to pick up the bits that coccinelle didn't catch. @@ @@ -struct of_device +struct platform_device Signed-off-by: Grant Likely <grant.likely@secretlab.ca> Reviewed-by: David S. 2010-05-22of: Remove duplicate fields from of_platform_driverGrant Likely1-2/+5
.name, .match_table and .owner are duplicated in both of_platform_driver and device_driver. This patch is a removes the extra copies from struct of_platform_driver and converts all users to the device_driver members. This patch is a pretty mechanical change. The usage model doesn't change and if any drivers have been missed, or if anything has been fixed up incorrectly, then it will fail with a compile time error, and the fixup will be trivial. This patch looks big and scary because it touches so many files, but it should be pretty safe. 2010-03-30include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo1-1/+0
implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. 2006-12-04[POWERPC] Souped-up of_platform_device supportBenjamin Herrenschmidt1-2/+3
This patch first splits of_device.c and of_platform.c, the later containing the bits relative to of_platform_device's. On the "breaks" side of things, drivers uisng of_platform_device(s) need to include asm/of_platform.h now and of_(un)register_driver is now of_(un)register_platform_driver. In addition to a few utility functions to locate of_platform_device(s), the main new addition is of_platform_bus_probe() which allows the platform code to trigger an automatic creation of of_platform_devices for a whole tree of devices. The function acts based on the type of the various "parent" devices encountered from a provided root, using either a default known list of bus types that can be "probed" or a passed-in list. It will only register devices on busses matching that list, which mean that typically, it will not register PCI devices, as expected (since they will be picked up by the PCI layer). This will be used by Cell platforms using 4xx-type IOs in the Axon bridge and can be used by any embedded-type device as well. The thermal control for the Xserve G5s had a few issues. For one, the way to program the RPM fans speeds into the FCU is different between it and the desktop models, which I didn't figure out until recently, and it was missing a control loop for the slots fan, running it too fast. Both of those problems were causing the machine to be much more noisy than necessary. This patch also changes the fixed value of the slots fan for desktop G5s to 40% instead of 50%. 2006-01-02[PATCH] powerpc: more g5 overtemp problem fixBenjamin Herrenschmidt1-3/+3
Some G5s still occasionally experience shutdowns due to overtemp conditions despite the recent fix. After analyzing logs from such machines, it appears that the overtemp code is a bit too quick at shutting the machine down when reaching the critical temperature (tmax + 8) and doesn't leave the fan enough time to actually cool it down. This happens if the temperature of a CPU suddenly rises too high in a very short period of time, or occasionally on boot (that is the CPUs are already overtemp by the time the driver loads). This patches makes the code a bit more relaxed, leaving a few seconds to the fans to do their job before kicking the machine shutown. 2005-12-20[PATCH] powerpc: g5 thermal overtemp bugBenjamin Herrenschmidt1-1/+1
The g5 thermal control for liquid cooled machines has a small bug, when the temperatures gets too high, it boosts all fans to the max, but incorrectly sets the liquids pump to the min instead of the max speed, thus causing the overtemp condition not to clear and the machine to shut down after a while. This fixes it to set the pumps to max speed instead. This problem might explain some of the reports of random shutdowns that some g5 users have been reporting in the past. Many thanks to Marcus Rothe for spending a lot of time trying various patches & sending log logs before I found out that typo. Note that overtemp handling is still not perfect and the machine might still shutdown, that patch should reduce if not eliminate such occcurences in "normal" conditions with high load. I'll implement a better handling with proper slowing down of the CPUs later. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

The current kernel contains a very crude driver that doesn't do much more than reading the real time clock synchronously. This is a completely rewritten driver that provides interrupt based command queuing, a userland interface, and an i2c/smbus driver for accessing the devices hanging off the SMU i2c busses like temperature sensors. This driver is a basic block for upcoming work on thermal control for those machines, among others. 2005-07-06[PATCH] openfirmware: generate device table for userspaceJeff Mahoney1-5/+4
This converts the usage of struct of_match to struct of_device_id, similar to pci_device_id. This allows a device table to be generated, which can be parsed by depmod(8) to generate a map file for module loading. In order for hotplug to work with macio devices, patches to module-init-tools and hotplug must be applied. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
