2024-05-08net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()Eric Dumazet1-1/+1
Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted in commit 501a90c94510 ("inet: protect against too small mtu values.") We read dev->mtu without holding RTNL in many places, with READ_ONCE() annotations. 2023-09-20net: ethernet: sun: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König1-3/+2
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert these drivers from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2023-07-28net: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring1-1/+1
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. Clang randstruct gets upset when it sees struct addresspace (which is randomized) being assigned to a struct page (which is not randomized): drivers/net/ethernet/sun/niu.c:3385:12: error: casting from randomized structure pointer type 'struct address_space *' to 'struct page *' *link = (struct page *) page->mapping; ^ It looks like niu.c is looking for an in-line place to chain its allocated pages together and is overloading the "mapping" member, as it is unused. This is very non-standard, and is expected to be cleaned up in the future[1], but there is no "correct" way to handle it today. No meaningful machine code changes result after this change, and source readability is improved. Drop the randstruct exception now that there is no "confusing" cross-type assignment. In [1], Christoph Hellwig has proposed to remove the wrappers in include/linux/pci-dma-compat.h. Some reasons why this API should be removed have been given by Julia Lawall in [2]. A coccinelle script has been used to perform the needed transformation Only relevant parts are given below. It has been hand modified to use 'dma_set_mask_and_coherent()' instead of 'pci_set_dma_mask()/pci_set_consistent_dma_mask()' when applicable. This is less verbose. Finally, the now useless 'dma_mask' variable has been removed. 2021-07-27dev_ioctl: split out ndo_eth_ioctlArnd Bergmann1-1/+1
Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands. This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find their way through the implementation. 2021-07-23NIU: fix incorrect error return, missed in previous revertPaul Jakma1-1/+2
Commit 7930742d6, reverting 26fd962, missed out on reverting an incorrect change to a return value. The niu_pci_vpd_scan_props(..) == 1 case appears to be a normal path - treating it as an error and return -EINVAL was breaking VPD_SCAN and causing the driver to fail to load. niu_pci_eeprom_read() may fail, so add checks to its return value and propagate the error up the callstack. An examination of the callstack up to niu_pci_eeprom_read shows that: niu_pci_eeprom_read() // returns int niu_pci_vpd_scan_props() // returns int niu_pci_vpd_fetch() // returns *void* niu_get_invariants() // returns int since niu_pci_vpd_fetch() returns void which breaks the bubbling up, change its return type to int so that error is propagated upwards. This reverts commit 26fd962bde0b15e54234fe762d86bc0349df1de4. Because of recent interactions with developers from @umn.edu, all commits from them have been recently re-reviewed to ensure if they were correct or not. Upon review, this commit was found to be incorrect for the reasons below, so it must be reverted. It will be fixed up "correctly" in a later kernel change. The change here was incorrect. While it is nice to check if niu_pci_eeprom_read() succeeded or not when using the data, any error that might have happened was not propagated upwards properly, causing the kernel to assume that these reads were successful, which results in invalid data in the buffer that was to contain the successfully read data. 2020-07-16treewide: Remove uninitialized_var() usageKees Cook1-3/+3
Using uninitialized_var() is dangerous as it papers over real bugs[1] (or can in the future), and suppresses unrelated compiler warnings (e.g. "unused variable"). If the compiler thinks it is uninitialized, either simply initialize the variable or make compiler changes. In preparation for removing[2] the[3] macro[4], remove all remaining needless uses with the following script: git grep '\buninitialized_var\b' | cut -d: -f1 | sort -u | \ xargs perl -pi -e \ 's/\buninitialized_var\(([^\)]+)\)/\1/g; s:\s*/\* (GCC be quiet|to make compiler happy) \*/$::g;' drivers/video/fbdev/riva/riva_hw.c was manually tweaked to avoid pathological white-space. No outstanding warnings were found building allmodconfig with GCC 9.3.0 for x86_64, i386, arm64, arm, powerpc, powerpc64le, s390x, mips, sparc64, alpha, and m68k. With legacy PM, drivers themselves were responsible for managing the device's power states and takes care of register states. After upgrading to the generic structure, PCI core will take care of required tasks and drivers should do only device-specific operations. 2018-05-04net: ethernet: sun: niu set correct packet size in skbRob Taglang1-3/+2
Currently, skb->len and skb->data_len are set to the page size, not the packet size. This causes the frame check sequence to not be located at the "end" of the packet resulting in ethernet frame check errors. The driver does work currently, but stricter kernel facing networking solutions like OpenVSwitch will drop these packets as invalid. These changes set the packet size correctly so that these errors no longer occur. The length does not include the frame check sequence, so that subtraction was removed. The success of CMA allocation largely depends on the success of migration and key factor of it is page reference count. Until now, page reference is manipulated by direct calling atomic functions so we cannot follow up who and where manipulate it. Then, it is hard to find actual reason of CMA allocation failure. CMA allocation should be guaranteed to succeed so finding offending place is really important. In this patch, call sites where page reference is manipulated are converted to introduced wrapper function. This is preparation step to add tracepoint to each page reference manipulation function. With this facility, we can easily find reason of CMA allocation failure. There is no functional change in this patch. In addition, this patch also converts reference read sites. It will help a second step that renames page._count to something else and prevents later attempt to direct access to it (Suggested by Andrew). 2015-02-28niu: fix error handling in niu_class_to_ethflow()Dan Carpenter1-4/+2
There is a discrepancy here because the niu_class_to_ethflow() returns zero on failure and one on success but the caller expected zero on success and negative on failure. The problem means that we allow the user to pass classes and flow_types which we don't want. I've looked at it a bit and I don't see it as a very serious bug.
