2020-01-31btrfs: use larger zlib buffer for s390 hardware compressionMikhail Zaslonko1-35/+100
In order to benefit from s390 zlib hardware compression support, increase the btrfs zlib workspace buffer size from 1 to 4 pages (if s390 zlib hardware support is enabled on the machine). This brings up to 60% better performance in hardware on s390 compared to the PAGE_SIZE buffer and much more compared to the software zlib processing in btrfs. In case of memory pressure, fall back to a single page buffer during workspace allocation. The data compressed with larger input buffers will still conform to zlib standard and thus can be decompressed also on a systems that uses only PAGE_SIZE buffer for btrfs zlib. 2019-02-25btrfs: change set_level() to bound the level passed inDennis Zhou1-8/+10
Currently, the only user of set_level() is zlib which sets an internal workspace parameter. As level is now plumbed into get_workspace(), this can be handled there rather than separately. This repurposes set_level() to bound the level passed in so it can be used when setting the mounts compression level and as well as verifying the level before getting a workspace. The other benefit is this divides the meaning of compress(0) and get_workspace(0). The former means we want to use the default compression level of the compression type. The latter means we can use any workspace available. Signed-off-by: Dennis Zhou <dennis@kernel.org> Reviewed-by: David Sterba <dsterba@suse.com> Signed-off-by: David Sterba <dsterba@suse.com>
2019-02-25btrfs: plumb level through the compression interfaceDennis Zhou1-3/+4
Zlib compression supports multiple levels, but doesn't require changing in how a workspace itself is created and managed. Zstd introduces a different memory requirement such that higher levels of compression require more memory. This requires changes in how the alloc()/get() methods work for zstd. This pach plumbs compression level through the interface as a parameter in preparation for zstd compression levels. This gives the compression types opportunity to create/manage based on the compression level. Now, we can migrate ownership of the workspace_manager to be in the compression type code as the compression code itself doesn't care beyond being able to get a workspace. 2017-06-19btrfs: switch to kvmalloc and GFP_KERNEL in lzo/zlib alloc_workspaceDavid Sterba1-3/+3
The compression workspace buffers are larger than a page so we use vmalloc, unconditionally. This is not always necessary as there might be contiguous memory available. Let's use the kvmalloc helpers that will try kmalloc first and fallback to vmalloc. For that they require GFP_KERNEL flags. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov1-19/+19
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2014-09-18btrfs compression: merge inflate and deflate z_streamsSergey Senozhatsky1-70/+68
`struct workspace' used for zlib compression contains two zlib z_stream-s: `def_strm' used in zlib_compress_pages(), and `inf_strm' used in zlib_decompress/zlib_decompress_biovec(). None of these functions use `inf_strm' and `def_strm' simultaniously, meaning that for every compress/decompress operation we need only one z_stream (out of two available). `inf_strm' and `def_strm' are different in size of ->workspace. For inflate stream we vmalloc() zlib_inflate_workspacesize() bytes, for deflate stream - zlib_deflate_workspacesize() bytes. On my system zlib returns the following workspace sizes, correspondingly: 42312 and 268104 (+ guard pages). Keep only one `z_stream' in `struct workspace' and use it for both compression and decompression. Hence, instead of vmalloc() of two z_stream->worskpace-s, allocate only one of size: max(zlib_deflate_workspacesize(), zlib_inflate_workspacesize()) Reviewed-by: David Sterba <dsterba@suse.cz> Signed-off-by: Sergey Senozhatsky <sergey.senozhatsky@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Chris Mason <clm@fb.com>

Instead of always creating a huge (268K) deflate_workspace with the maximum compression parameters (windowBits=15, memLevel=8), allow the caller to obtain a smaller workspace by specifying smaller parameter values. For example, when capturing oops and panic reports to a medium with limited capacity, such as NVRAM, compression may be the only way to capture the whole report. In this case, a small workspace (24K works fine) is a win, whether you allocate the workspace when you need it (i.e., during an oops or panic) or at boot time.
