2017-08-01fs: convert a pile of fsync routines to errseq_t based reportingJeff Layton1-1/+1
This patch converts most of the in-kernel filesystems that do writeback out of the pagecache to report errors using the errseq_t-based infrastructure that was recently added. This allows them to report errors once for each open file description. Most filesystems have a fairly straightforward fsync operation. They call filemap_write_and_wait_range to write back all of the data and wait on it, and then (sometimes) sync out the metadata. For those filesystems this is a straightforward conversion from calling filemap_write_and_wait_range in their fsync operation to calling file_write_and_wait_range. 2017-07-07mm: per-cgroup memory reclaim statsRoman Gushchin1-1/+1
Track the following reclaim counters for every memory cgroup: PGREFILL, PGSCAN, PGSTEAL, PGACTIVATE, PGDEACTIVATE, PGLAZYFREE and PGLAZYFREED. These values are exposed using the memory.stats interface of cgroup v2. The meaning of each value is the same as for global counters, available using /proc/vmstat. Also, for consistency, rename mem_cgroup_count_vm_event() to count_memcg_event_mm(). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull sched.h split-up from Ingo Molnar: "The point of these changes is to significantly reduce the <linux/sched.h> header footprint, to speed up the kernel build and to have a cleaner header structure. After these changes the new <linux/sched.h>'s typical preprocessed size goes down from a previous ~0.68 MB (~22K lines) to ~0.45 MB (~15K lines), which is around 40% faster to build on typical configs. Not much changed from the last version (-v2) posted three weeks ago: I eliminated quirks, backmerged fixes plus I rebased it to an upstream SHA1 from yesterday that includes most changes queued up in -next plus all sched.h changes that were pending from Andrew. I've re-tested the series both on x86 and on cross-arch defconfigs, and did a bisectability test at a number of random points. I tried to test as many build configurations as possible, but some build breakage is probably still left - but it should be mostly limited to architectures that have no cross-compiler binaries available on kernel.org, and non-default configurations" * 'WIP.sched-core-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (146 commits) sched/headers: Clean up <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove #ifdefs from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove the <linux/topology.h> include from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers, hrtimer: Remove the <linux/wait.h> include from <linux/hrtimer.h> sched/headers, x86/apic: Remove the <linux/pm.h> header inclusion from <asm/apic.h> sched/headers, timers: Remove the <linux/sysctl.h> include from <linux/timer.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/magic.h> from <linux/sched/task_stack.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/sched.h> from <linux/sched/init.h> sched/core: Remove unused prefetch_stack() sched/headers: Remove <linux/rculist.h> from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove the 'init_pid_ns' prototype from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/signal.h> from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/rwsem.h> from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove the runqueue_is_locked() prototype sched/headers: Remove <linux/sched.h> from <linux/sched/hotplug.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/sched.h> from <linux/sched/debug.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/sched.h> from <linux/sched/nohz.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/sched.h> from <linux/sched/stat.h> sched/headers: Remove the <linux/gfp.h> include from <linux/sched.h> sched/headers: Remove <linux/rtmutex.h> from <linux/sched.h> ...

2017-03-02sched/headers: Prepare to remove <linux/cred.h> inclusion from <linux/sched.h>Ingo Molnar1-0/+1
Add #include <linux/cred.h> dependencies to all .c files rely on sched.h doing that for them. copy_from_iter_full(), copy_from_iter_full_nocache() and csum_and_copy_from_iter_full() - counterparts of copy_from_iter() et.al., advancing iterator only in case of successful full copy and returning whether it had been successful or not. Convert some obvious users. *NOTE* - do not blindly assume that something is a good candidate for those unless you are sure that not advancing iov_iter in failure case is the right thing in this case. 2016-09-27fs: make remaining filesystems use .rename2Miklos Szeredi1-3/+7
This is trivial to do: - add flags argument to foo_rename() - check if flags is zero - assign foo_rename() to .rename2 instead of .rename This doesn't mean it's impossible to support RENAME_NOREPLACE for these filesystems, but it is not trivial, like for local filesystems. RENAME_NOREPLACE must guarantee atomicity (i.e. it shouldn't be possible for a file to be created on one host while it is overwritten by rename on another host). Filesystems converted: 9p, afs, ceph, coda, ecryptfs, kernfs, lustre, ncpfs, nfs, ocfs2, orangefs. After this, we can get rid of the duplicate interfaces for rename. 2016-06-11vfs: make the string hashes salt the hashLinus Torvalds1-1/+1
We always mixed in the parent pointer into the dentry name hash, but we did it late at lookup time. It turns out that we can simplify that lookup-time action by salting the hash with the parent pointer early instead of late. A few other users of our string hashes also wanted to mix in their own pointers into the hash, and those are updated to use the same mechanism. Hash users that don't have any particular initial salt can just use the NULL pointer as a no-salt. 2016-04-04mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov2-6/+6
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. 2016-01-15kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcgVladimir Davydov1-1/+1
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to memcg. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). 2015-01-26ncpfs: get rid of d_validate() nonsenseAl Viro3-77/+52
What we want is to have non-counting references to children in pagecache of parent directory, and avoid picking them after a child has been freed. Fine, so let's just have ->d_prune() clear parent's inode "has directory contents in page cache" flag. That way we don't need ->d_fsdata for storing offsets, so we can use it as a quick and dirty "is it referenced from page cache" flag. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2015-01-21fs: remove mapping->backing_dev_infoChristoph Hellwig1-1/+0
Now that we never use the backing_dev_info pointer in struct address_space we can simply remove it and save 4 to 8 bytes in every inode. 2015-01-21fs: introduce f_op->mmap_capabilities for nommu mmap supportChristoph Hellwig1-1/+1
Since "BDI: Provide backing device capability information [try #3]" the backing_dev_info structure also provides flags for the kind of mmap operation available in a nommu environment, which is entirely unrelated to it's original purpose. Introduce a new nommu-only file operation to provide this information to the nommu mmap code instead. Splitting this from the backing_dev_info structure allows to remove lots of backing_dev_info instance that aren't otherwise needed, and entirely gets rid of the concept of providing a backing_dev_info for a character device. It also removes the need for the mtd_inodefs filesystem. 2014-12-11ncpfs: return proper error from NCP_IOC_SETROOT ioctlJan Kara1-1/+0
If some error happens in NCP_IOC_SETROOT ioctl, the appropriate error return value is then (in most cases) just overwritten before we return. This can result in reporting success to userspace although error happened. This bug was introduced by commit 2e54eb96e2c8 ("BKL: Remove BKL from ncpfs"). Propagate the errors correctly.
