2024-04-26mm: switch mm->get_unmapped_area() to a flagRick Edgecombe1-1/+1
The mm_struct contains a function pointer *get_unmapped_area(), which is set to either arch_get_unmapped_area() or arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown() during the initialization of the mm. Since the function pointer only ever points to two functions that are named the same across all arch's, a function pointer is not really required. In addition future changes will want to add versions of the functions that take additional arguments. So to save a pointers worth of bytes in mm_struct, and prevent adding additional function pointers to mm_struct in future changes, remove it and keep the information about which get_unmapped_area() to use in a flag. Add the new flag to MMF_INIT_MASK so it doesn't get clobbered on fork by mmf_init_flags(). Most MM flags get clobbered on fork. In the pre-existing behavior mm->get_unmapped_area() would get copied to the new mm in dup_mm(), so not clobbering the flag preserves the existing behavior around inheriting the topdown-ness. Introduce a helper, mm_get_unmapped_area(), to easily convert code that refers to the old function pointer to instead select and call either arch_get_unmapped_area() or arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown() based on the flag. Then drop the mm->get_unmapped_area() function pointer. Leave the get_unmapped_area() pointer in struct file_operations alone. The main purpose of this change is to reorganize in preparation for future changes, but it also converts the calls of mm->get_unmapped_area() from indirect branches into a direct ones. The stress-ng bigheap benchmark calls realloc a lot, which calls through get_unmapped_area() in the kernel. On x86, the change yielded a ~1% improvement there on a retpoline config. In testing a few x86 configs, removing the pointer unfortunately didn't result in any actual size reductions in the compiled layout of mm_struct. But depending on compiler or arch alignment requirements, the change could shrink the size of mm_struct. 2024-01-26ramfs: Initialize security of in-memory inodesRoberto Sassu1-1/+31
Add a call security_inode_init_security() after ramfs_get_inode(), to let LSMs initialize the inode security field. Skip ramfs_fill_super(), as the initialization is done through the sb_set_mnt_opts hook. Calling security_inode_init_security() call inside ramfs_get_inode() is not possible since, for CONFIG_SHMEM=n, tmpfs also calls the former after the latter. Pass NULL as initxattrs() callback to security_inode_init_security(), since the purpose of the call is only to initialize the in-memory inodes. 2024-01-09mm, treewide: rename MAX_ORDER to MAX_PAGE_ORDERKirill A. Shutemov1-1/+1
commit 23baf831a32c ("mm, treewide: redefine MAX_ORDER sanely") has changed the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive. This has caused issues with code that was not yet upstream and depended on the previous definition. To draw attention to the altered meaning of the define, rename MAX_ORDER to MAX_PAGE_ORDER. 2023-01-19fs: port inode_init_owner() to mnt_idmapChristian Brauner1-1/+1
Convert to struct mnt_idmap. Last cycle we merged the necessary infrastructure in 256c8aed2b42 ("fs: introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). This is just the conversion to struct mnt_idmap. Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with namespaces that are relevent on the mount level. Especially for non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this can be a potential source for bugs. Once the conversion to struct mnt_idmap is done all helpers down to the really low-level helpers will take a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of two namespace arguments. This way it becomes impossible to conflate the two eliminating the possibility of any bugs. All of the vfs and all filesystems only operate on struct mnt_idmap. 2023-01-19mm/nommu: factor out check for NOMMU shared mappings into ↵David Hildenbrand1-1/+1
is_nommu_shared_mapping() Patch series "mm/nommu: don't use VM_MAYSHARE for MAP_PRIVATE mappings". Trying to reduce the confusion around VM_SHARED and VM_MAYSHARE first requires !CONFIG_MMU to stop using VM_MAYSHARE for MAP_PRIVATE mappings. CONFIG_MMU only sets VM_MAYSHARE for MAP_SHARED mappings. This paves the way for further VM_MAYSHARE and VM_SHARED cleanups: for example, renaming VM_MAYSHARED to VM_MAP_SHARED to make it cleaner what is actually means. Let's first get the weird case out of the way and not use VM_MAYSHARE in MAP_PRIVATE mappings, using a new VM_MAYOVERLAY flag instead. This patch (of 3): We want to stop using VM_MAYSHARE in private mappings to pave the way for clarifying the semantics of VM_MAYSHARE vs. VM_SHARED and reduce the confusion. While CONFIG_MMU uses VM_MAYSHARE to represent MAP_SHARED, !CONFIG_MMU also sets VM_MAYSHARE for selected R/O private file mappings that are an effective overlay of a file mapping. Let's factor out all relevant VM_MAYSHARE checks in !CONFIG_MMU code into is_nommu_shared_mapping() first. Note that whenever VM_SHARED is set, VM_MAYSHARE must be set as well (unless there is a serious BUG). So there is not need to test for VM_SHARED manually. No functional change intended. filemap_get_folios_contig() Convert to use folios throughout. This is in preparation for the removal for find_get_pages_contig(). Now also supports large folios. The initial version of this function set the page_address to be returned after finishing all the checks. Since folio_batches have a maximum of 15 folios, the function had to be modified to support getting and checking up to lpages, 15 pages at a time while still returning the initial page address. Now the function sets ret as soon as the first batch arrives, and updates it only if a check fails. The physical adjacency check utilizes the page frame numbers. The page frame number of each folio must be nr_pages away from the first folio. 2021-01-24fs: make helpers idmap mount awareChristian Brauner2-8/+13
Extend some inode methods with an additional user namespace argument. A filesystem that is aware of idmapped mounts will receive the user namespace the mount has been marked with. This can be used for additional permission checking and also to enable filesystems to translate between uids and gids if they need to. We have implemented all relevant helpers in earlier patches. As requested we simply extend the exisiting inode method instead of introducing new ones. This is a little more code churn but it's mostly mechanical and doesnt't leave us with additional inode methods. 2021-01-24attr: handle idmapped mountsChristian Brauner1-2/+2
When file attributes are changed most filesystems rely on the setattr_prepare(), setattr_copy(), and notify_change() helpers for initialization and permission checking. Let them handle idmapped mounts. If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount map it into the mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to non-idmapped mounts. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. Helpers that perform checks on the ia_uid and ia_gid fields in struct iattr assume that ia_uid and ia_gid are intended values and have already been mapped correctly at the userspace-kernelspace boundary as we already do today. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. 2021-01-24inode: make init and permission helpers idmapped mount awareChristian Brauner1-1/+1
The inode_owner_or_capable() helper determines whether the caller is the owner of the inode or is capable with respect to that inode. Allow it to handle idmapped mounts. If the inode is accessed through an idmapped mount it according to the mount's user namespace. Afterwards the checks are identical to non-idmapped mounts. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. Similarly, allow the inode_init_owner() helper to handle idmapped mounts. It initializes a new inode on idmapped mounts by mapping the fsuid and fsgid of the caller from the mount's user namespace. If the initial user namespace is passed nothing changes so non-idmapped mounts will see identical behavior as before. 2019-09-13vfs: Convert ramfs, shmem, tmpfs, devtmpfs, rootfs to use the new mount APIDavid Howells1-41/+58
Convert the ramfs, shmem, tmpfs, devtmpfs and rootfs filesystems to the new internal mount API as the old one will be obsoleted and removed. This allows greater flexibility in communication of mount parameters between userspace, the VFS and the filesystem. See Documentation/filesystems/mount_api.txt for more information. Note that tmpfs is slightly tricky as it can contain embedded commas, so it can't be trivially split up using strsep() to break on commas in generic_parse_monolithic(). Instead, tmpfs has to supply its own generic parser. However, if tmpfs changes, then devtmpfs and rootfs, which are wrappers around tmpfs or ramfs, must change too - and thus so must ramfs, so these had to be converted also. 2016-09-28fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani1-3/+3
CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps. Use current_time() instead. CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe. This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also, current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be y2038 safe. Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they share the same time granularity. 2016-09-20ipc/shm: fix crash if CONFIG_SHMEM is not setKirill A. Shutemov1-0/+9
Commit c01d5b300774 ("shmem: get_unmapped_area align huge page") makes use of shm_get_unmapped_area() in shm_file_operations() unconditional to CONFIG_MMU. As Tony Battersby pointed this can lead NULL-pointer dereference on machine with CONFIG_MMU=y and CONFIG_SHMEM=n. In this case ipc/shm is backed by ramfs which doesn't provide f_op->get_unmapped_area for configurations with MMU. The solution is to provide dummy f_op->get_unmapped_area for ramfs when CONFIG_MMU=y, which just call current->mm->get_unmapped_area(). 2016-05-21tmpfs/ramfs: fix VM_MAYSHARE mappings for NOMMURich Felker1-6/+2
The nommu do_mmap expects f_op->get_unmapped_area to either succeed or return -ENOSYS for VM_MAYSHARE (e.g. private read-only) mappings. Returning addr in the non-MAP_SHARED case was completely wrong, and only happened to work because addr was 0. However, it prevented VM_MAYSHARE mappings from sharing backing with the fs cache, and forced such mappings (including shareable program text) to be copied whenever the number of mappings transitioned from 0 to 1, impacting performance and memory usage. Subsequent mappings beyond the first still correctly shared memory with the first. Instead, treat VM_MAYSHARE identically to VM_SHARED at the file ops level; do_mmap already handles the semantic differences between them.
